what kind of floors do you have to clean?

Hard floors? Or carpet?

My parents live in a two story home. One floor has carpet, the other has hard floors. At their age, it's not easy to carry vacuums up and down the stairs. They have a basic Hoover upright which is ok for the carpet, but doesn't clean hard floors well. I bought them an Electrolux UltraSilencer which works great on hard floors, plus it's light and quiet. Attachments work well, but the carpet attachment is not electrically powered (i.e. it's a turbo brush but not a power head), so it's not good for deep pile carpet (but they have the Hoover upright). For all else, it's great, and if someone had hard floors only, this would be the only vacuum needed. It's normally $300 but Lowes has it on sale for $240. Cleans nearly as well as my Miele S500 cannister, with the exception of carpet performance. Electrolux has a higher end model with powered brush but it's closer to $500

a Kirby is always a good choice, if you cant find anything locally I have a Kirby Generation 6 2000 edition tha t I'm looking to get rid of.

Have you ever considered seeing if a vac shop would take your Rainbows in on trade for a new vac or a refurbished high end vac?

I own 10A,7A,6A royals and a 3.5A one-When I use the 10A models-I do notice MORE noise and the roller brush spins faster.I put them into hose mode-and don't notice much diffrence in airflow or suction.the 10A motor is overkill. Its not needed-I use my 7A ones most. For hoses-of course the Kirby is easist-you just undo the blet lifter and take the floor nozzle off-then put on the hose.No fiddling with the belt.for hard floors best to get a canister-I would STAY AWAY from the Eureka-Electrolux ones-I have seen too many of these in for rep[airs suffering from many problems--lets see blown circuit boards, blown motors,(the motor looks like it was in an engine test stand and ran until blew)bad wand connectors.Too fix these the parts have to come from Sweden.so many of them get abandoned at the vac place-later to the dumpster.Get a lower priced Meile or something elese-much better or an older metal body REAL Electrolux.
