Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

Congrats! My best friend and partner recently lost their Century to, um, accident. And they found that Buicks have become trendy and out of their range - is anyone else noticing this?

Buick (or people selling used ones) could be capitalizing on the fact that they're all that's left between GM's entry level Chevrolet and top of the line Cadillac.

Thanks for the Comments guys.

QSD-Dan, yes my 1999 Park Avenue has 170k on it, and the 90 LeSabre I used to have had 185k on it, both with the 3800 engine. I am keeping the Park Avenue to drive around town and in bad winter weather as I'm not ready to let her go.

Gansky-1, I have purchased all but 2 cars through either estates or from elderly who are no longer able to drive, best wa to get a good deal, I paid $4,800 under book value for mine.

Fred S., I'm glad someone noticed what my plate said. Plenty of people stare at it and with puzzled looks try to figure it out without luck.

Ralph, I think I did well, only thing I feel I'm missing is ventilated seats to keep the buns cool in summer. Even if Buick wasnt top ranked I'd still get one as I have always favored them above everything else, plus with the track record I've had I wouldnt think twice.

Drewz, I feel mine will be fine, as I think if there were major issues from the factory they'd be found by now, besides mine is the final year for the trusty old 3800 V-6. I personally could have got a 2011 leftover but didnt as I dont know about the new 3.9L and I know a 3800 and trust it. As for the Lucerne being made along side the Cadillac DTS, there is no quality there to rub off, I had a 2001 DeVille(same as the DTS) and it was the worst car ever, tranny went out at just over 60k, was running warm, and the POS engine burnt oil, 1 quart every 1500 miles(normal from the factory) and the aluminum Northstar engines had a tendency to overheat and warp the head once the gasket blew.

Davey7, I know Buick has become a bit more popular, but I wouldnt say trendy. I looked at new Veranos and for under 25k they seemed nicely equipped. As for value around here Buicks have always had a pretty high retail value, people are selling and getting $6k out of an 01 Park Avenue with 120k. What I bought has easily been selling for $18-19k but I paid $14k. Buicks have always been popular here so I see nothing different

Wow! I'm 38 and on my 5th Buick...there were a couple of Caddys, Chryslers, and an Infiniti at some point. :). I like comfort. :)

What Can I say Dan, in 10 years I've had my share of cars, In addition to the 4th Buick I've had 1 DeVille, 1 Impala, and a Town Car. The Town Car is just a toy o I've had a second car to supplement it. I enjoy a change in cars and Big luxury but when I go non Buick I long for another Buick which causes me to get a new one

Congratulations!
That car is very beautiful and it looks very comfortable too.

It's nice how american cars are big. (and look heavy too)
I love this imponent front. it makes me think it hides a very powerful engine.

What's the gas consumption? Is it manual or automatic transmission?

I loved the color too. Blue is my favorite color. I can say that because i bought a new car 2 weeks ago and I'm already tired of it's color. When i bought it I thought it would be fun to have a funny color for the daily driver, now my friends and family say i'm driving a Post It note.

By the way, there's something I never understood. How does the american license plates system work? As I could see, people can write almost anything on plates and the plate belongs to the owner, not to the car.

Here in Brazil we have a 3 letter-4 numbers standard. The first letter is the state (My state, Parana, is A or B.). the sequence is choosen randomly by the system or people can pay (actually donate $40 to a charity institution chosen by the traffic department) to choose 2 letters and the four numbers, if the sequence is available on the system. Once you buy a brand new car and you license it, the plate will die with the car. If you move to another city or you sell the car to someone in other city, the oly thing that changes is the city name.

And the worst thing that someone can do is crash the car damaging the plate. Replacing the plate is a nightmare. Of course the letters and numbers can never be changed, but you have to fill a huge form justifying why does it need replacement, pay $200 for the application form, return the damaged plate (or the remainings of it), pay $75 for each plate plus $150 for the wire seal. (yes, there are the 2 or 4 standard screws plus a numbered wire seal that looks like a zip tie.)

American license plate system

The policies with license plates vary from state to state.

I live in Washington. We have two plates (one for front, one for rear). One gets a number at random, unless one buys a "vanity plate." Vanity plates cost more, but one can select what it says, as long it's unique and I think anything offensive (swear words, for example) is not allowed. A standard plate stays with the car when the car is sold, but a vanity plate stays with the owner, and if the car is sold, the new owner needs to buy a new plate. In either case, one needs to buy a new plate every so many years. (The reason given: the reflective quality of the plate wears out eventually.)

One also needs to buy tabs every year to keep the registration current. The tab is a small sticker that gets placed on the back plate. Tab renewal date varies car to car (it depends on the date of orginal registration).

If I were to move to another state, I'd have to tranfer the registration to that state, which would mean a new title of ownership and new plates.

Yeh, since we've lost Pontiac, I really can't say Saturn counts either...!

The newer cars go, the older some people should buy...!

I'm in the market for something "gently used" but grand, myself... (Though my sister is leasing a very nice, new Regal!)

What is the purpose of the wire seal?
Well, theoretically, that's to avoid people replacing the plate on a similar car (for example, having two cars exactly alike and then pay only one register..

But, in fact, that's only another way to steal money from people. It's not unusual that the wire gets rusted and break. every time it happens, people have to pay EVEN MORE taxes to get a new seal. other times, vandals (usually artsy fartsy teenagers) on the streets simply break them just for fun.

That's Brazil, the country of the fees over fees over fees.

Every Brazilian works for almost 5 months per year only to pay taxes.

And if that's not enough, you should see the national traffic code... the traffic tickets are outrageous! (some of them are perfectly understandable and acceptable), for example 971 reais for DUI plus 1 year without the DL + a recycling course (watching accident videos, etc) to get the DL back... 127x5 if the driver has got the same fine before.) and if the driver UI causes an accident (even without victims), it's not a traffic infraction but a penal crime. (and can go to jail). if a driver UI causes and accident and kill someone, it's considered intentional murder.

And the standard to be considered under influence is 0.06mg of alcohol per liter of blood. (if you eat a salad with wine vinegar and in sequence use a mouthwash like Lysterine, and take a breath test, that's enough to get more than that level of alcohol in your blood)
127 reais for stopping on the pedestrian line in a stoplight, 127 x 3 if you cross on red light.

even more taxes? the government has a mandatory insurance. all cars must pay for it. But it's not like a private insurance... it's valid only for the victims, not the car.... if you crash and kill someone, this mandatory insurance will give to the victim's family something near 5 thousand dollars. But... to get this money, the burocracy is outrageous... some people wait for more than 10 years to get the indenization.

even more? the tolls. BR277, for example. (connects my city to the rest of the state... leaving the city there's the first toll (around 7 dollars) 30 km ahead, the second, (9 dollars), 10 kilometers ahead, the third (5 dollars)

A 600km trip can cost more than 5 hundred dollars on tolls.

At this price, you may think that our roads are almost better than Autobahn in Germany, right?

Well.. the reality is that we don't find holes on the asfalt... we find pieces of asfalt in the holes. max speed is 110km/h, but in some areas it's impossible to drive fastar than 30km/h (and the roads aren't duplicated, thousands of people die every year). THe last time it was fixed was.. maybe... more than 20 years ago.

Want something else? In any "decent" country, it's normal to sue the government if, for example, you crash because a stoplight had a malfunction and two streets got green at the same time. In Taxzil thare's a law that says that citizens can't sue the government. Convenient (for them) isn't it?

And guess where is all that money? NOBODY KNOWS. (But a politician was caught in the airport with some millions in the underwear a few years ago)

The newest stealing strategy is the plates changing. the old plate was light gray with black fonts. They changed the standards saying that the grey is difficult to be caught on photographic radars. Well, that's plausible but.... everybody has to pay all those taxes again to replace the plates. the new one is almost the same, but has a reflective varnish so scary that they look like glowing in the dark.

Leaving trafic... lets go to other areas:

Health: the worst public hospital in the U.S. is hundreds of times better than a standard brazilian hospital.

Education: Our schools are terrible, obsolete and even the educational plan is poor. Teachers fom most of the federal universities started a strike almost 6 months ago. Student's simply lost the whole year because of the absenses.

social security/retirement: Never get old in brazil! Work hard while you're young and then run away from this country. You pay vey high taxes during your whole life and when you retire, what you get isn't enought to pay the electricity bill. (i worked my whole life with a registered monthly income around 15 thousand dollars and now that I'm retired, i get something around 150 dollars per month)
Luckily I've made a private retirement plan from my bank, decades ago... so i can get 5k dollars/month, and I still working otherwise money would be a huge problem for me.
