New Samsung Washer & Dryer Pair

Hi everyone,
I'm having some work done in the laundry area of the house, and I thought I'd seek to replace the two Siemens Appliances I had with something new, to look new and smart when the building work is complete (won't be until the end of May but couldn't wait that long!)

So, last weekend, I bought a new Samsung Washing Machine and matching Samsung Heatpump dryer. I was swayed by the price reductions of them - the washing machine was £800 instead of £1400, and it comes with a 5 year parts and labour guarantee and 10 years on the motor. The dryer was £750, instead of £1100. Both brand new, not ex display. I know this is entering mid range Miele money, but I wanted to give these a go first. Plus, TBH, I think they look pretty decent.

Controls

the machine is controlled by a tablet type device - all the settings are on it.

So far, I've used Auto Optimal, Cotton, Synthetic, Bedding and Wool.

Sensing

Every cycle starts with the machine sensing the load, and deciding how much water, detergent to use, as well as time taken to complete the cycle.

Drum and Auto Dispense Unit

Here's the 10KG drum - with a nice blue LED light, and a 1600 RPM spin speed

You can also see the section for the detergent tanks - it holds about 2ltrs of detergent, and 1ltr of fabric softener.

The screen tells you when its dispensing detergent - I must admit, it uses detergent sparingly - perhaps I was always using far too much! Either way, things are CLEAN and thats the main thing

taking some getting used to, which cycle to use, how long it takes, etc. But I really, really like it

General Thoughts So Far

I'm just getting used to them to be honest! But, in terms of the washer, what I like already:
- it looks VERY nice
- its incredibly quiet
- it gives you a report at the end of the cycle about how much water and energy you've just used
- 1600 RPM spin is noticeably better than the 1400 RPM on the Siemens and the 625 on the Top Loader
- auto dispense feature is pretty cool, although I can see bubbles in the machine I'm SURE its using less than I'd used previously!
- massive range of programmes. Some pointless. Some useful.
- feels well built. Door is really heavy
- its a Which Magazine best buy
- the nearly half price I got it for
- high water levels

The Dryer:
- big load
- drum light
- range of cycles
- option to override the eco settings and dry "properly"

I don't get these new cycle names. What is 'active wear', 'gardening', 'cooking and dining' , 'active kids', 'hygiene care' etc. - what do any of these designations have to do with washing different types of fabrics and colors? How does any of this direct or even negate the need for appropriate sorting - e.g. dark colors, whites, towels, natural fibres, synthetics and so on?

What do you do if you have inactive or no kids? There is no program for that. What is hygiene care? Aren't all cycles meant to do that? What does the cooking and dining cycle do? Roast turkeys and boil potatoes? The cycle selection on the Samsung is a representation of life-style choices and is clearly aimed at a consumer base that does not know the first thing about doing laundry.

Congratulations! Always nice to get new appliances! Very sleek looking machines! IIRC you found the capacity of your Siemens dryer on the small side. Do you know how much bigger the drum of the new dryer is?

Precisely. Samsung have managed to dumb things down to an even lower level. All form and no function.

I wonder exactly why we lost the Home Laundering Consultative Council programmes listed on washing machines? These programmes made more sense.

Good luck with the Samsung. I do have reservations about the quality of Samsung machines. I also have concerns about their spare parts and service arrangements.

What on Earth was wrong with the Siemens machine?

These are the special stains cycles. Just like any other stain function, they are somewhat questionable in use, but their naming is quite bad for sure.

BSH dryers all have 112l drums. AEG's drums used to be 118l, but IIRC they are 120l by now as well.
Whirlpool cooperation dryers have 120/121l.
Samsung dryers have 120l as well, I think.

The washer looks really fancy. Congrats on your purchase (and the great discount!).

As Henrik said, these are stain cycles. Their purpose is explained in the downloadable manual.

I looked at samsung.com and the 24" dryers are listed as 4 cu.ft. models, which would make them one liter bigger than the BSH models.

Just checked the german website, and the A+++ models I looked at were labeled 115l.

thanks for your comments - although just to point out I didn't buy the machine because it has a gardening cycle! I have no idea what it does, nor will I ever find out. haha.

And just so none of you think I'm mad, I would NEVER have paid full price for this machine. EVER. I'd of been straight to the Miele Outlet in Oxford, if I was going to spend £1400 on a washer.

@rolls_rapide - thanks very much, I have read about the service of Samsung, but also read the Which? reviews, and coupled with the fact the washer has a 5/10 yrs guarantee (more than some Miele's) and that they seem to be exploding into the UK Marketplace at the moment, I thought I'd give them a go. Ref the Siemens machine - there was nothing wrong with it at all. I just fancied a change to be honest.

@rapunzel - thanks for you comments. As I said above, I didn't buy it for those cycles. The hygiene cycle (I read up on it) heats to 60*c, and hold it at that temp for the duration of the wash part and then rinses 5 times, and spins 1600 rpm

Brilliant....

Looking machines, but you are almost 100% going to be using the warranty.

I have had 2 Samsung machines, the first (the 12kg model, but the model before yours; had the colour screen and everything but no auto dose) was totally dead as a dodo in 7 months, after 6 engineer visits and the biggest fight with a company I ever had, I got the money back.

2nd Samsung washer (the current* one), has just needed a new inverter motor AND a new PCB, just after 2 years, the “sasmsung” engineer (they don’t have their own) said there is a real problem with the inverter motors.

*when waiting for the Samsung to be repaired, I got a 2nd hand Bosch Logixx 1600 Express
, Maxx freedom performance, I’ve stuck with that one as it runs rings around the Samsung.

But this machines you have sure look nice.

Congratulations Dude!

Looks like a brilliant machine. You'll be really pleased you got it.

I recently brought a Samsung and couldn't be happier with it... despite numerous comments along the lines of "It'll break within a month"... "Good luck with that" ... "It'll shred you clothes to bits" ... some people just cant help themselves, eh?!

Like yours it was a Which? Best Buy and came with a 10 year guarantee.

Let us know your thoughts after you've had a chance to do a couple more washes.

Did you properly register the extended guarantee/warranty?

I read various customer reports that it had to be applied for via a different part of the Samsung website, within a certain time period. If you don't, you get the standard warranty.

Yes!!!

Check, check and triple check that you have registered you warranty properly, and exactly in the way Samsung request.

Also to expand on the point made above, the FULL guarantee is NOT 10 years, it is is a full 5 year warranty and a 10 year guarantee JUST on the inverter motor.

Each time I have had to claim on the guarantee on mine (both which best buys too btw), there has been a bit of back and forth on whether my guarantee was registered (it was).

Not to sound a party pooper and don’t get me wrong they are great looking machines, but it just feels like Samsung’s attitude to their after sales on their appliances is the same as that they mainly hope for (and get) on their phones and TVs - people will switch them out after 1 or 2 years use to keep up with the latest model, which for washing machines isn’t true (well true for most, probably the wrong forum)

Samsung extended warranty

From reading people's experiences with registering the guarantee, and attempting to get service within the warranty period, I got the distinct impression that Samsung was employing stalling and diversion tactics to throw folk off the trail.

Not dissimilar to...

The Hoover 'Free Flights Fiasco' - which sprang immediately to mind; the way Hoover moved the goalposts (certain airports only, insurance, particular dates). Make things as awkward as possible for the customer.
