MAYTAG DID BUY AMANA ,SO BASICALLY AN AMANA WAS A MAYTAG,NOW IF YOU BUY AN AMANA IT IS A WHIRLPOOL INSIDE,BECAUSE WHIRLPOOL NOW OWNS MAYTAG.THE LAST AMANA BY RAYTHEON HAD AN ACCESS PANEL ON THE FRONT FOR SERVICE,THOSE WERE THE ONES WITH THE BAD DRUM SEALS. AS FOR THAT PUMP SETUP I DONT LIKE IT ,SPEED QUEEN SHOULD HAVE THE BELT DRIVE PUMP LIKE IT USED TO,THEY SHOULD HAVE LEFT WELL ENOUGH ALONE.WELL AT LEAST THE OUTER DRUM IS NOT PLASTIC,FOR SOME REASON I THOUGH THEY WERE.

Hey Buddy, do you think that Alliance addressed the issue, when they bought them from Raytheon? And that it is now solved, surly Alliance would not have their machines on the market knowing the problems Amana had from Raytheon. The service tech that came out to my house, told me "you have a pair of very solid machines there son". Well we will see, at least i have an awesome warrenty on them, plus Nathan has a protection plan on his master card for any purchase over $500, that should it fail before it is paid in full, They (master card) will replace it.
 
NEW SPEED QUEENS WOULD BE THE ONLY NEW WASHER I WOULD BUY FOR A NEW SET.I ACTUALLY WANT ONE BUT DONT HAVE THE MONEY,I HAVE AN 80S WHITE WESTINGHOUSE AND EVERYONE SAYS THE TUB SEALS ARE BAD IN THOSE BUT I HAVE NEVER HAD A PROBLEM,I THINK YOU WILL BE OK.

I think so too. I love how quite they are and how it still has the slow long agitation stroke, which in my opinion, and i think everyone else, is a more through and efficient wash system.
 
So a few questions for you. Did the leveling out of the washer take care of the wet clothes issue, and does it drain the water out completely prior to spinning? Does it get up to full speed before the cycle ends? Inquiring minds want to know.

Yes leveling the machine did take care of the wet clothes, and the machine does a spin drain, and yes it does get to full speed before cycle ends. Last night i washed all the throw pillows, 4 for each load, 2 loads total, and the machine handled them beautifully. Today however Nathan,(my boyfriend) Did some laundry, and put towels,(white) in with some colored clothes, and what a disaster he made there was lint everywhere, UUUHHHH Men never learn, you don't NEVER EVER!!! put towels in with enything but towels. So i told him NEVER!!!, to do laundry again, to leave that task to me..

Good to hear it was just a leveling adjustment. I've had my set now for one year now and no problems whatsoever! These machines are built to last for years (decades even)! Of all the current top loaders out there - you can't beat the quality construction of these machines. They are very quiet when operating. I was thinking about getting another set - but my old SQ's from 1983/1984 are still running perfectly! Had to replace the pump and a belt last year but that was minor. Also replaced the felt belt around the front of the dryer, but not a hard thing to do.

Maytag never made Speed Queen.The Speed Queen is one of the only brands that have stayed tried and true since day one.Raytheon bought them from McGraw edison back in the late 70's/early 80's.But,when Goodman took the appliance divisions from raytheon,they left Speed Queen as well as Caloric and Modern Maid on the table.Because Alliance already made their commercial machines in the original Speed Queen factory where the Amanas were made too,They allowed Maytag to contiue its production of them there.After Maytag and Amana went with Whirlpool,Alliance now has that factory for themselves.They,being the owner of Huebsch and Speed Queen commercial divisions,now only make those two brands.One of which,Speed Queen is also made for the home.

Glad to hear that all the washer needed was a good leveling out. These look to be gorgeous machines! Glad they are working out for you and are meeting your expectations. Now Nathan on the other hand needs to be leveled out. Leave my toys alone. Just kidding, it's sort of funny when someone has no idea about laundry and they just throw anything in together. I learned this many years ago when my wife "tried to do laundry", everything white came out pink. Years ago one of my roommates figured he would do all the laundry including mine for the week. He ran everything through the whirpool on the 22 minute soak cycle then thru the clothes in the dryer. I had to rewash and dry all my clothes. He didn't bother doing his, says its ok. He scratched and itched all week. Needless to say he never did that again. Happy laundering in the new set. Just joking about Nathan he sounds like a great guy.

I honestly can't keep track of all the Raymanatagpoolliance bouncing around and how it relates to SQ's products. My Raytheon Amana never had any leaks in the nearly 10 years that I owned it. It just ate belts like crazy and its matching rattletrap dryer went through lint filter assemblies at about the same pace either due to warping or cracking or both. Never have I ever known a washer or dryer to require so much servicing--not even the dreadful and deafening '67 Wards Signature my mom had.

From what I've read above, it would seem that the current SQ's are the new Maytags when it comes to design and durability. Long strokes and staying power. What man wouldn't appreciate those combined attributes? If I ever go back to a top loader, SQ is the brand I'd be looking at. Short stroke machines strike me as fragile and wimpy.
 
Spin Spray Question

Does this machine have a spin-spray in the Regular wash between the wash and rinse? If so, about how long is it?

How does this machine handle the cool-down in the Permanent-Press cycle? Is it simply a long spray or is it a partial drain + cold refill sequence?

Slow Fill?

Lee, is your washer a "slow fill" model? About two years ago I advised a friend of mine to buy the locally sold SQ TL (220V, 50Hz, export model). Once installed he found it was an "extremely slow fill" model. It drove my friend crazy, it took close to 10 minutes to fill the tub in the hi setting, with the correct water pressure of course.

If he chose the second rinse option the full wash cycle took 30 minutes just filling the tub with water! He complained to the local service dept. and they answered the machine was built like that. Had he known this beforehand he would had never purchased this washer.

OTOH, the washer is built like a war tank.

I never understood the design concept behind a slow fill.

Thanks for all the responses to this, and i a especially like the one from rp2813, that was too funny and i loved it. To answer some of y'all questions. To thor no my washer fills fast in all the temp settings, and to mrb627 yes it does have a spray rinse, before the actual rinse cycle, as far as the perma press cycle goes i am not shure how it works, as i have not done a perma press cycle yet. And to retro-man, yes Nathan is an AWESOME guy i am so blessed, and yes he does need a leveling out, i have specifically told him he is NOT to do the laundry THE END!!! And he is cool with that, now if i can keep him away from my 72 Lady Kenmore we'll be doing just fine. Cheers y'all Lee
 
Nice horizontal axis comparison Dave! Just the term "top loader" is so suggestively powerful in and of itself! For deranged minds like mine, anyway. I'll not touch the "slow fill" scenario.

So Lee, what about that spray rinse? How long is it? On my Amana it only happened after the wash cycle and was only 15 seconds long. Not nearly enough in my opinion. Its center dial Maytag predecessor sprayed for a whole minute. Rinsing was my Amana's worst attribute. I know the latest SQ's mechanics aren't anything like their once-removed cousin Raytheon Amanas, but am curious if maybe the skimpy spray rinse might still be part of the timer design on yours. The knobs look the same as my Amana's ;-)

The spray rinse on my SQ is like a minute long or something like that. And speaking of deranged minds LOL i might have ya beat there buddy :-) LOL, i too will not touch the "slow fill" scenario.
 
Lee, nice to know a guy who is still under 30 has me beat. You will go far in the world of deranged fun!

Glad to hear you have a decent spray rinse going on your SQ. Sounds like SQ recovered nicely from the Raytheon disaster. I guess if I had purchased such a pair (if they had existed back then) instead of my Amanas, I'd still have both machines. I was tired of the service calls on the Amanas and "upgraded" to a big Duet pair. I don't regret my decision but do find myself wishing I had a top loader for certain jobs sometimes.

Possible rationale for 'slow fill': The fill is often the loudest portion of a wash cycle on top-loaders. Is it possible they designed a slow fill to reduce noise levels? We've all noticed they've done that to new dishwashers for the same reason.

Just a thought...
 
Oh I will bite...slow fill huh...never heard of it. Unless the water pressure is really low then there will be a slow fill. On my Amana the water came out into what was at one time a lint filter ring..why they still used it I dunno but it would let the water drip down the tub sides. The spray rinse wasnt long and in my opinion not effective at all.
Sometimes a slow filling after a long and slow deep stroke period can be a good thing....nasty boy I am.
 
I'm with you Mike. In regard to washers too!

My '97 Amana didn't do a slow fill and it was still very quiet with supposed full force water pressure. I have no idea what the logic is behind a slow fill. Seems to me that such a situation would have a negative impact on spray rinses also.

Beware

Yes, thes do look just like the old Amanas, I had one. They lasted only a few years untill the dryer burst into flames, and the washer's motor went out. This all happened as Maytag was in the process of buying Amana, which meant no parts for the washer. And why even bother with the dryer, everything inside was melted.
