I finally uploaded my video of my 2009 Speed Queen AWN542 TOL TL. I captured all the functions: fill, wash, spray/spin 1, rinse, and final spin and abbreviated the time. The video quality is a bit low due to file size, but still pretty good. I plan to make more (other cycles/speeds) as soon as I get new video editing software. I hope you enjoy!

Camera Angle

Could be just the angle of the camera shot, but your wash tub seems to lean forward slightly during the washing portion of the cycle.

Is it perfectly level?

Malcolm

It does! Seems to be a balancing mechanism...I'm guessing...the heavier the load, the more severe? Always return to perfect center once complete...thoughts?

Wonder

I wonder if the weight of the load combined with the weight of the motor/pump position causes the machine to lean forward. I suppose you could try to verify the tension on each of the springs underneath. ( I think there are six, if not mistaken )

Otherwise, you might try to adjust the machine to pitch slightly to the rear and see if that improves balance.

Although, honestly, it probably doesn't affect the performance of the machine a single bit.

Glad you waited to post this video after I got my Imperials, I might have waivered back to a TL machine.

That could be it...since most of the parts are "up front". I wonder if anyone else experience this? Most SQ owners will never notice since lid has to be down before agitation without the bypass. Hmmm...

It only does it when heavy loads. I washed a huge comforter thing in it one time and it was very severe, but never got off balance...hasn't budged in 2 months...not a even a centimeter. If you notice in the video, once the water is gone, it's back on center. I've pushed the agitator around in all directions to make sure nothing was wrong (without clothes), and it springs back to center. :?

Spin Balance

I did notice that when the machine stopped for rinse fill the tub was more centered than at the start of spinning. You could send an email to Speed Queen service and ask them if it poses any issue. I bet it doesn't.

Still, it would be nice if it behaved itself.

Malcolm

210 degree arc

the agitation arc is 210 degrees in one direction....the only manufacturer with a transmission to do that, amazing of 2 designs that they created can give you 210......whirlpool and maytag belt drives give you only 180 degrees.....some even less

still an excellent machine.....hard to choose which one

thanks for the video

How does one measure? I thought it would be 210 in 1 direction, but mine is not...about 1/2 of that (I place dry erase markers on the fabric softener dispener and measured it each way...unless this is determined somehow differently?

What's cool is that, as far as I can tell, SQ's have always had 210 arc. If you really look at the machine, where the agitator is so much skinnier than a WP, and has lots of room around it - it makes me think of an old wringer washer - even the way the water rocks back and forth with bulky items.

My SQ also leans foward while washing, and my machine is level. Don't worry about it..when she's finished, the tub is always perfectly centered.

Another video...

Short video with close up of agitator, large load, several sheets and a blanket--note great turnover for such a large load.

Fabric Softener?

Dan, Malcolm
What kind od detergent and fabric softener do you use?
I have been using Cheer Fresh Scent Powder or Liquid and sorry, but I love Suavitel. One morning while I was at the Dunkin Donuts drive-thru, the clerk exclamined "Oh my God! I love the way your clothes smell. What do you use? I said Sauvitel of course!

Laundry Detergent

Currently, I seem infatuated with Cheer Bright Clean Liquid. My fabric softener is Purex Mountain Scent. It is the first bottle I have tried and it appears to work just as well as the Downey version.

Malcolm

Purex Fabric Softener

Is great stuff, and much cheaper than Downey. Even in my front loader, I find that the Downey gunks up in the dispenser just like it did with our old Whirlpool Top Loader.

The way I measure arc is by placing a piece of black electrical tape, cut thinner, across top of the agitator, and set machine for a slower agitation, and take notice of an imaginary point of how the outside edge of the tape cross each other, on a WP or Maytag they just touch with out crossing, this is half way which would be 180 in one direction. a simple way to look at a whirlpool was the agitator cap had a "W" on it, while at neutral it would be nomally read horizontal, while agitating the "W" became an "M"...on a similar idea of a SQ, the "W" would almost become a "3" so to speak....

You know you could also raise that water level up another inch or two....

Another classic sound to these SQ is the legendary "gulping" of water from under the agitator as it starts to spin.....Alliance could have kept the aireated fill flume to keep it as classic as possible...but a super machine none the less.....if my neptunes ever give out, this will probably be my next 2 sets, although 2 stacked FL is a nice idea too....

Stacked

I thought about getting a stacked front loader set and then a top loader to go next to it. Best of both worlds. Or perhaps a stacked FL set and then leaving space for a vintage machine.

I need to find a house with a basement so I can build my own laundromat. ( If I ever win the lottery )

Same thing with mine. The tub leans forward during the wash and rinse, but is centered after the spin cycles. I contacted Speed Queen about this and was assured this was normal. So far the machine is almost 4 years old and haven't had an issue yet.

Malcolm's FL and Dan's TL are outstanding....thanks for the pics and videos....and for allowing us to drool

Everyone all together .... OOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHH....AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!!!

I'll make some more vids next week. I'm going to do a delicate cycle and show a video of the agitation arc. Glad you like them!

We have a SQ AWS76NW (series made prior to the AWN series) and the washtub tilts forward a bit, less than an inch, during wash and rinse cycles. When spinning it returns to dead center (the lid switch is bypassed).

We've been curious about it, glad that SQ said it's normal.

If I could win the lottery I would have a SQ fl'er, SP tl'er, and the double dryer. I like the SQ agitator better than the dual action agitators by Whirlpool/Maytag.

The SQ agitator started it all for me. I think the only 'back and forth' agitator left on the market. I hate those corkscrew things. BORING. Watching my SQ is like being in a time machine. :)

The Dryer Dryer unit is cool, but you have to run another 220 line to get it to work. But with both of those things on, nearly 11,000 watts of dryer going--that's a huge amount of power. If it's a gas line, just T off supply.

It seems like the Speed Queen top loaders are pretty much the answer for those who want vintage style washing, but in a brand new machine. I myself am wanting to hopefully someday get myself a Speed Queen set. You get a solid, one piece agitator, the slower, longer washing strokes that many people seem to miss, and a 710 rpm spin speed WITHOUT any modifications. Granted you can get the same stroke speed and a 750 rpm spin speed out of a vintage Maytag with the 50 HZ pully set up, but from how it looks, the Speed Queen has a larger tub about the same stroke speed and only 40 less rpm spin speed right from the factory. And the versatility you get with many different cycle combinations and infinite variable water level that makes laundry day so much better. It would be nice to see more and more Speed Queen sets in Americas homes.

Surprisingly, Maytag 806 and 712 has a larger tub. Not much, 1" taller and 3/4" wider than Speed Queen tub. The 50 hz pully set regular wash stroke becomes 77 OPM and the fast spin is 757 RPM.
