First off want to say I already own a Speed Queen AWS that's getting old and worn so I have been looking for a newer used one to replace it. Came across a LWN432SP115TW01 commercial washer which is pretty much the holy grail these days on FB marketplace. The seller states that it was just installed in December and is brand new but something is wrong with it. "It won’t cycle through the stages of washing. You can manually operate each stage, but it does not do it on its own." is what is explained in the add and they are asking $380 which is a screaming deal if it's a simple fix. Anyone have an idea what the problem could be? I mean I suppose i could just pick it up and have SQ fix it under warranty right? I have the serial number so I guess i could check to see if it's still under warranty.

Welcome to the forum!

It sounds to me like the timer has failed, and is no longer advancing. You can check the manufacture date by looking at the first four digits of the serial number. The first two digits of the number indicate the year, while the second two indicate the month. My Speed Queen washer's serial number, for example, starts with 1702, which is February of 2017. However, I will warn you that most manufacturers will deny warranty coverage to anyone but the machine's original owner, so that's a factor to consider as well. The timer (part number 203387P) seems to run around $125 new online, with used ones priced at around $65.
Hope this helps,
Thatwasherguy.

Ok thanks. Looks like it's a 2023 model, month of Feb so it's still pretty new. I talked to the guy selling it and I asked why he didn't get it fixed. he said it's for his work at a rehab center that's it's easier for them to just sell it and get a new one. They already got a new one to replace it.

I imagine you're right about the timer since these machines are so simple, it's worth grabbing it and just buying a timer for it. Also plan on doing the water level switch conversion, would be worth it for an almost new commercial Speed Queen.

Dead timer (motor) in less than a year?

Might still be under warranty, give Speed Queen a call with the model and serial number in front of you.

Speed Queen better get their act together and source their timers from another manufacture. I have timers in machines from my collection that are still operational from when Kennedy was still president.

I called and their automated system said the warranty is good for over a thousand days still, whether or not it's transferable is the question but I'll find out. Maybe if can get the original purchase order form the guy that could help, I don't know, but I'll have to talk to an actual person.

I thought maybe the timer going out was a fluke but is it a common issue on newer speed queens or something?

Mechanical timers have been a pathetic joke for over 20 years across virtually all manufactures and it just keeps getting worse with each passing year. Nobody wants to sink the funds to produce a quality timer anymore.

Interesting, my current SQ was made in '08 so maybe I could just use the timer out of that one since I've had no problems with it lol.

Sounds like an easy enough fix tho, as long as i know what the issue is and the parts are available I'd still rather deal with that over a digital top loader.

For $380 I’d grab it before anyone else does or the guy changes his mind. Anything that could be wrong is repairable for far less than the cost of a brand new machine. Maybe you’ll get lucky with them covering it under warranty. I’d try and get the original purchase order like you said.

I told him I'd grab it tomorrow but he's not gonna be at the facility where it is until Sunday. I imagine most people are gonna be turned off by it because it says in the add it's broken basically. Unless a used appliance shop sees it or something I think I'll be good hopefully, I'm the fist one to say I want it so hopefully he holds up his end and gives me first dibs. We'll see, if I get my hands on it I'll post it here.

Bad mechanical timer on a speed washer

This is not a common problem, but as Dan said timers are not what they used to be the electronic controls hold up much better on Speed Queen’s these days. You probably could take the timer or maybe the whole control panel from your 2008 machine and install it on this new machine if you like, Timers were not that great in 2008 either.

If this is a commercial model, you only have one year parts warranty on the parts, although, given the manufacturing age, Speed queen will probably send you a free timer.

Well the plan was once I get this one running right I'll recondition the one I have now and sell it, so probably won't be scalping any parts off it. Currently waiting to hear from SQ if the warranty is transferable or not, if not the wife doesn't feel to good about it lol

Speed Queen laundry warranties

The warranty is transferable. If the original purchaser registered it, we are a Speed Queen dealer we’ve done this for other customers

But as I mentioned, it’s a parts only warranty anyway, but the timer is relatively easy to replace.

Picked it up yesterday, ended up getting it for $320 cuz it has a little dent on the front so he discounted it because of that. We got to talking and he said it never worked right out of the box so it was barely used. Sounds like a dud timer was installed at the factory, seems plausible since what you guys are saying about the crappy timers these days. It wouldn't shock me if they issues where an entire lots were duds, and could very well be this serial number falls under a lot of bad timers or something. Anyway, here it is in all it's glory, brand new SQ commercial top loader for 300 bucks haha

New Speed Queen commercial Toploader

You got a very good deal on a virtually brand new machine, hook it up and confirm that it actually has a problem, if it seems like it needs something like a timer either buy one or call Speed Queen you can probably talk them into sending you a free one, since it’s still technically Barely a year old.

This machine had a one-year warranty on all parts, a three-year warranty on the transmission since it was a commercial model. There was no labor warranty whatsoever.

This machine will easily last 25 years if you use it about 10 loads a week, possibly a good deal longer, we installed eight of these in a condominium building where they get constant use almost around the clock. They’re going on eight years old only a few problems here and there. The condo building management estimates that they’re used between six and 10 times a day each. That means each one of these machines has already done over 20,000 loads and only a few of them have even needed a new belt, in full disclosure. We did have one where the transmission leaked oil badly and we ended up rebuilding that machine it’s still going strong.

While timers are occasionally a problem, there was no big problem with timers there was not a whole bad batch of them, etc. these eight machines in the condo building have mechanical timers into my knowledge only one of them has been changed.

I bet the the problem is just the timer motor, not the timer itself. You can remove the timer motor and bench test it with a test cord. Wouldn't even be surprised if the connection from the timer motor to the timer slipped off or weren't connected at all. Firmly push all the connections into the timer and timer motor, then recheck.

Ok, I'm gonna open up the back of it here soon to make sure everything is connected properly and then hook it up and run it, would be awesome if it's just a loose or disconnected wire on the timer. The guy I bought it from said he was originally gonna have it scraped cuz he didn't want to deal with it then thought better of it haha, good for me I guess!

Congrats! I got a new commercial model in the box for that price a couple of years ago. These kind of deals are definitely out there if you keep your eyes open.

So I took apart the control panel to see if there was anything obvious like a cut wire or something (see pics) but it all looks good. Also unplugged the timer and plugged back in, cuz why not who knows. Ran it trough a cycle, after it filled up it started washing and it gave me hope, but then it never stopped washing lol. I had to manually advance the rest of the cycles. So.....I guess it clearly needs a new timer assembly. The machine is already registered and still under warranty, so who should I call at SQ (service? warranty? customer service?) and how should I word this the best possible way so I can get them to send me a new timer?

As I suggested before

Call the folks at Speed Queen in Wisconsin and ask them to send you a free timer. You might also be able to go to a local Speed Queen dealer and they will get you a timer if they’re willing in warranty.

You can also call an authorized Speed Queen dealer and they will get you a free timer, but you will have to pay for the service call and labor it’s up to you.
