Norge Washer - No Spin Cycle

Replaced solenoid = no go. Tub still does not fill at beginning of wash/agitate cycle. It goes straight to agitate. The next cycle is supposed to be cool-down, but the timer/dial just hangs at that point. Any ideas much appreciated.

Monday is wash day!!!

Duh. Forgot to close lid to let machine fully cycle. This machine came with the house we've been in for 5 years. I believe it was purchased new by the original owners. Matching dryer, if there ever was one, is long gone. House was rented out for 1 year to a European cross country ski team before we arrived. Replacement part I found (see photo) has PN 8662-S (crossed out in pen) and 12-75 (12.75?? 12 75??) stamped on it. Does the 'W' represent Westinghouse? Thanks for your posts and interest. Hoping for another 30 years out of this puppy.

NORGE BRAKE SOLENOID

The [W] stands for Westward they were a supplier of after market parts for major appliances. 12-75 is the date of manufacture December 1975. Good luck with your washer not to be negative but it won't last another 30 years.

I do believe this is the same or VERY similar solenoid use in the GE Spotscrubber washer's Filter-Flo hose to cut the supply. How interesting!

You know, I've never seen a real Norge working in person... Which is odd because my extended family had a couple when I was growing up, but as I recall they were on the back porch in both occasions and not in service. I remember thinking how mean that black agitator looked in there, like an angry old lady with her hands on her hips.

There are enough that have been able to be salvaged by club members you should some day finally get to see a real one. Especially after their perforated tub design came along, they were probably the best cleaning top loading automatics of their day. I didn't like the pre-programmed button cycles on our 1964 Norge. But everything else about the machine I loved and it washed some of the dirtiest laundry of our family's existence during that period. Norges were best for the greasiest, grimiest clothes. In terms of claning and capacity, the Frigidaire 1/18 was next in line.

in 1979,one of my favorite laundromats was norge equipped-
used to love going there for a listen;all the clanks,bangs,
groans,thumps and squeals-could hardly hear the asteroids
and space invaders games there over the din...
BTW we used to go to the laundromat to wash "greaser"clothes
-laundromat had a few machines marked "greaser"

Pre-Programmed Buttons

Bob, all of those piano keys on the mid 70's LK machines are why (along with super high price tags) I steered clear of them when shopping with my mom. It seemed to me that they took all of the fun and control out of doing a load of laundry.

I actually loved Lady Kenmores. I pined for the new Kenmore that replaced the Norge to be a Lady Kenmore, but knew my mom wouldn't go for it and so the Kenmore 800 was the compromise. I simply did not agree with 3 of the 8 buttons on the Norge. The only perfect pushbutton washers were the Lady Kenmores. It's how I taught myself to sort laundry and wash clothes (God knows my mother couldn't!!). Always the Lady Kenmore way. Nuff said!!!
