I wish it were that simple...

I have an acquaintance who is a life-long alcoholic (in his 30's now). He cheerfully admits it; he embraces it. He says he can put away an 18-pack of beer in one evening, on a regular basis, and there are witnesses to prove it.

Unfortunately it's all catching up with him. He recently got busted for a DUI (single vehicle accident). Lost his license for a year, and still has criminal charges to face. So he's riding his bicycle to/from work. But now since he can't easily carry an 18 pack home every night, he stops off at bars on the way home from work, and has fallen twice off his bike and injured himself. I figure it's just a matter of time before he gets busted for drunk in public or worse (a bicycle DUI) and winds up doing jail time.

The problem is, so far, is that he doesn't want to stop drinking. It's like watching a train wreck in slow motion.

The mind is alwasy the biggest obstacle in all things.

It's a difficult affliction in that there is a genetic pre-dispostion towards alcoholism, especailly in blonde-haired, blue-eyed persons. There seems to be an affinity for booze the non-afflicted just can't understand.

I thought I had read that serotinin levels differ in alcoholics than in others and that bringing the level to the "normal" level helps. Alcohol is temporary self-medicating in that it does, for a VERY short while, boost said levels. It is my understanding that the overall serotonin level is ultimatley lowered and the cycle repeats itself.

If this pill helps bring relief until one develops the intense will-power needed to stop the cycle, then it would appears to be of great benefit to those in need of assistance.

Yes, but...

For the pill to work the person has to stop drinking in the first place. This guy is so advanced that I'm sure he'd have severe withdrawal symptoms if he stopped cold turkey. As far as I can tell, he just doesn't want to stop. I haven't pushed the issue - he's a co-worker and it could be crossing the line. At least he doesn't drink at work.
