From CNNMoney.com:

"On Thursday, the company said it is repositioning its Cheer detergent brand to target consumers looking for bargains and is cutting prices on that brand by 13% . P&G has already announced a test for a cheaper version of Tide called Basic. The company on Thursday said it is "adjusting" prices on large sizes of Tide. While Tide remains the company's premium laundry brand, Cheer is being positioned as a "value" offering within the laundry segment."

So that means that P&G will cut prices on the 80 ld/100 oz. & up sizes of Tide and will reposition Cheer as the value brand. With that move, what will happen to Era? And wasn't Gain the value offering?

Sounds like American laundry detergent manufacturers are hurting as needed quantites and demand continue to drop due to the invasion of front-loaders.

What I don't understand is

Why P&G is dragging it's feet and trying to re-invent itself now. With all the new HE Machines hitting the market (walk into any store that sells appliances and you will see more HE machines than traditional), that all of there detergents aren't "Low Sudsing" or "HE/HE Compatable"?

Common Sense...

it's what the high paid executives don't have....

Why not just make the all HE/Low sudsing, for use in all machines, Sears has done it with one detergent, and one little scoop for top loaders or front loaders....

theres even a new Clorox bleach, for Cold Water, so what now, I have to buy a bleach for cold water, and one for hot water, and maybe even one for warm water, and then one in every scent, and one for my TL and another for my HE machines.....

if the company wants to cut cost, try making one formula, let's say liquid TIDE, make it low suds, and all they have to add would be the SCENTS, or make them CLEAR AND FREE, and a BLEACH ALTERNATIVE formula, how freakin simple would that be?

were going back to the 70's...remember when we had a detergent for every temperature, and CHEER was the first to offer ALL TEMPERATURE, in one box...or even BOLD was detergent and fabric softner?

and how many diferent sizes do we really need?......they shold just limit it to 50, 100, and 200 ounces..and leave it at that......

If manufacturers have to cut cost, they need to look at cutting out the stupid stuff instead of cutting the quality of the product...

Do you think your going to buy TIDE BASIC at a cheaper price and really only get less cleaning power?......price for price and cleaning effectiveness, I'll stick with SEARS for now...

3 sizes, about 4 formulas, and no advertising cost handed down thru my product price, Think they know what their doing?

Between the front loading washers, dumbing down of detergents etc, it's all going to land us in the same place: six billion people walking around in stained underwear.

Sell your P&G stock and buy Hanes and Fruit of the Loom.

i totally agree with you, dumbed down detergents, front loaders, dumbing down water, dumbing down even temperature, i am so sick of the way everything has transpired over the years, is it that hard to ask that i have CLEAN laundry anymore?

P & G Products

I rarely use P & G Laundry Detergents anymore as they are too high sudsing, even using smaller amounts than they recommend. I have a traditional top loader (2007 Maytag/Whirltag). I used to use Cheer for dark colors as it did not have optical brightners in it-- now I assume they have put them back in since they say their new formula brightens clothes. I love the Kirkland Signature "Store" brand at Costco-- Its low sudsing, cleans well, and rinses easily.

Sorry i have a hair up my ............

*WHOOP*WHOOP*

Bitter in aisle one..............

Sorry kiddo: Things in life change. Those who don't bend, break. So start adjusting. If you are getting so rigid now you may not make it to old-age.

Here is a news-flash for most Americans. Resources (natural and otherwise) are NOT limitless. One day we'll have to figure that out. So as long as babies are being pushed out of 'gina holes at this current rate we will all have to cut back on our use of EVERYTHING. Deal with it.

OOH Aunt Flo' must be in town! I'm a-gonna have a Midol; and sit a spell! *LOL*

Toggles...

That was kind of uncalled for.

Most of us are here because we enjoy the look, feel, sound, reliability, and effectiveness of vintage washers.

As far as resources, throwing away an appliance after 5 or so years of use is not the wisest direction to go, yet here we are, going straight in that direction of wastefulness for some time now.

As far as water, it's not created nor destroyed, it never disappears as it's part of the perpetual water cycle.

Changes do need to be made as far as using soaps that have little if any impact on the environment, at the same time, effectively clean, and changes ARE being made in that direction. I get excellent results with Kirkland's eco friendly laundry soap and also get great results using Full Circles eco friendly fabric softener. I get better results soaking with oxygen bleach than I ever did with chlorine.

Lighten up a little, won't ya :)

Getting back to the topic

I wonder if they will change Cheer or just cut prices? The articles I've seen indicate that the brand will be "repositioned." I expect the current version has a big profit margin built in and they could stand to sell it cheaper and make up the profits on higher volume.

What REALLY annoys me is that Cheer powder is no longer blue! It's just a boring white. Wasn't the whole idea of Cheer, originally, to have a detergent with bluing already added? It should be BLUE, dammit.

Something Else...

When Cheer was first introduced and throughout the years, it had on the box/bottle label that it was "heavy duty". Is it still making that claim today?

toggelswitch if you want to make smart remarks about people who prefer top loaders over front loaders that have to be thrown away i suggest u go somewhere else, if u want something to comment on about the environment why don't you comment about the new cfl light bulbs that contain mercury and are getting in landfills and contaminating our water. i am so SICK and tired of people patronizing me and others on here JUST b cuz we like to use WATER to wash our clothes instead of a 20 lb load washed in a cup of water i dont know what your problem is???? you dont have to be rude and make comments like " sorry i have a hair up my " maybe you do have a hair up there.

i dont think i am going to go on here anymore b cuz it seems like EVERYTIME i go on here and make one simple comment about how i like vintage machines and top loaders somebody has to come along and make their stupid comment about the environment, blah blah blah, WATER IS RECYCLED HELLLOOOOOO!!!!!

Bye bye. More drama queens we don't need.

First of all who died and declared you boss? Honey, you don't give orders to anyone but your own @$$.

Learn to manage your own ridiculous mouth and limited rigid thoughts, then manage well your own life. In 20 years MAYBE you can try to direct traffic on someone else's website.

I wish you all the best and send you light love peace and good energy. Try to be forgiving and kind, for one day you too will need these of someone else.

I didn't hear you apologize to everyone (who nicely told you off in this thread) for showing your bad side(or was that your good side?) with your hystrionics. Did I miss your apology?

If you are over 21, feel free to send me some hate-mail privately. I'll send you a bill for the psycho-therapy later. If you are underage I won't answer you.

If you dont like what I have to say, simply click on the litle X and be done with me. It's that simple.
