Wow! Lovely to see that spin washer!
That's the first time I've seen close-up pics of one.
It's the matching machine to my Parnall Auto Dry TD59 dryer, which dates from 1960.
I'm glad that machine has been saved. Good job I hadn't seen it listed, or I'm sure I'd have been bidding on it!

Thank goodness this machine has found a good home! Congratulations Darren on the new old acquisition.

Definitely deserving of preservation and, with you having the servicing and spare parts bumpfff, assured a great future. Excellent too that you have an agitator for it as well.

Keep us updated with its repair/servicing/rebuild.

Paint job advise

I'm having a holiday at the moment and spoke to the paint sprayer about the casement on the spin washer. The top of the machine is stove enamelled and not really in the best of condition. It's not chipped but I think when the case is re painted the top will stand out like a sore thumb. The sprayer said he would give it a go but was not sure how the finish would appear. Not sure if I should just leave it or give it a go. What are folks experiences of spraying stove enamel ??? I don't want to mess it up in anyway. Also struggling to get some grey ribbed rubber hoses for the fill and drain. They need to be longer that the standard type of Hoover twin tub filler hose. I wanted to get the machine back to as original as possible with it being a bit of a rarity . Would really appreciate some advise. Thanks Darren
 
Clutch problems

Before i went on holiday i did a test overflow rinse even though the cabinet had been removed. With the tub full of water the machine the wash function would not work the motor was trying to start but there was lots of clicking and humming from the motor. When the machine was put on spin there was no problem and the water drained away. After a while i realised that the brake drum rotates on a clutch helix and clears the brake cone and allows the machine to spin.
When it stops the brake drum drops to come in contact with the brake shoes. If i wedged the brake drum off the cone the washer would work fine.
So managed to work out there was a problem with the brake and shoes so OFF WITH CLUTCH !!!

Two of the four brake shoes were missing and the two remaining came off with the clutch. Managed to make 4 new brake shoe from a twin tub brake and bonded them into the housing.

This has cured the problem as there is sufficient clearance to enable the machine to wash and spin normally

What a relief as I've been told that the clutch is always a weakness of these machines

I have now sent off cabinet to be sprayed so hopefully get the washer back together.

Hopefully i can see an end in sight. Darren

back to Life

Well after months in the spray shop i finally got the call to collect the cabinet.
Took a bit of time to get it all back together …….. when a restoration goes over so many months it's hard to remember how it all went back together. Anyway got the machine in the laundry room and gave it a go .[this post was last edited: 1/19/2014-10:24]
