parts for kitchenaid models 17 and older

thank you stevet for supplying me with those part numbers and the info. and for anyone else reading this it is possible to get pump seals and other parts for old kitchenaids.

i called hobart today in troy ohio and was told they do not carry parts at their home base. they gave me the no. of the parts supply center here in cinti. and i called them. i was able to get pump seals (7) and a couple extra wash impellers for the 15-17 models. they also have them for the 18-20 ofcourse and on up from there. i was even able to oder a pump seal for the kd-12 i have, although they have to get it from another office somewhere in the U.S.

stevet, if you read this could you please send me the part no. for the upper pump housing, i think called wash arm support, as well as the bottom half housing, and if available to you the part no. for motor and lower drain pump housing. i would like to see if i can get these as well. all this for the 15-17 models please. these are the one's i am collecting.

if anyone wants the no. for hobart in troy ohio it's 937-335-7171 and they can direct you to the nearest parts center in your area. they were very nice to deal with! and again stevet, thanks for your invaluable info concerning these old kitchenaids that i love and collect.

Okay, Calm down!

Peter, I am glad you were able to get your parts from your local office and like I told you, they can check every branch and agency in the country for parts and see who may have parts no longer stocked in Piqua, Ohio which is where all Hobart parts are shipped from.

I would just offer this advice about calling Hobart in Ohio.
They haven't owned Kitchenaid for over 25 years and while they will always endeavor to help someone who calls in to them, there are no people there who have any real information about those products anymore.

My advice would be to determine what part numbers you need and if you can't get them from Whirlpool, then try your LOCAL Hobart branch or agency and you can contact them by dialing
1-888-4HOBART. Follow the prompts to locate the nearest office and you will be transferred directly to it and the call is free.
With all the knowledgeable people on this forum, you will surely get the information you need to get the right parts.

Concerning the KD 14 impeller, Hobart provided only Brass impellers and metal pump housings for the commercial version of that machine. The Kitchenaids had black phenolic plastic impellers and housings. They are interchangeable and needless to say, the metal ones would last maybe 400 years in a domestic setting!

What model pump parts are you referring to in your post above?

And concerning the seal installation process..

NEVER, NEVER NEVER USE A PETROLEUM BASED LUBRICANT ON ANY SHAFT SEAL! AND DON'T TRY SILICONING IT IN PLACE EITHER!

The best thing you can use to install any Hobart shaft seal is any liquid soap, be it hand soap, body soap, shampoo or liquid dishwashing liquid. That will lubricate all of the parts that need it, not harm any of the seal parts and facilitate installation. Seals differ in their configuration and sometimes you only need to lubricate one half of the assembly to make it fit into its housing. So 100% of the time you will need to lubricate the stationary part of the seal. On other seals. you have to mount the ceramic portion into the drain impeller so you will need the soap. Some of the 17 thru 20 seals have little dimples on one side of the ceramic seal that goes into the impeller. Make sure that you mount the totally flat side of the seal facing out so it will mate with the carbon seal in the motor housing. If you get it wrong, it will most likely leak.

Concerning the KDSS-17A. you will absolutely love that machine!
I found a KDSS16 once at the curb and I grabbed it right up and built a complete machine from the parts in my 15. The serviceman had pulled the stator off the motor as well as the water valve and blower assy but left everything else intact.

I just replaced those parts from the 15 and had a brand new machine. My Mom loved it so much and would you believe, it was actually much quieter than the 15! It had very little insulation on the tank but the stainless tank did not have that peculiar "RING" to it compared with the TriDura tubs. The stainless steel seemed to absorb the sound and it did help sheet much of the water off the top and sides as they advertise now.
It turned out to have a bad sani thermostat in that it did not delay long enough to heat the water to 180 so I had to swap that part out from the old machine as well and then we got the 180 rinse.

Regrading the Kitchenaid Museum.. It is located right in the heart of Greenville, Ohio. It is actually the Kitchenaid retail store but they dont sell any major appliances there. They do have a nice little musuem downstairs which showcases the mixer line's history and some of the other "food" machines.
When I was there 4 years ago, they had a KD10 on display but that was all. They may have expanded it a bit but it is still worth a trip to see it. You can also get to see the mixers being made as they have tours that you can take thru the factory.

I don't think it is more than an hour away from Troy so it will be a fun trip for you to make.

i did not post that thread concerning a kd-14 impeller. i don't have a kd-14 but do have a kd-12 as we discussed before. you had mentioned the impeller was brass so the only thing i was interested in getting for that machine was a new pump seal which i ordered today from hobart using the part number you gave me.

as far as the 15-17 series is concerned i was told by hobart cincinnati today that to order parts i would need part numbers. i used the one's you gave me to order seals and wash impellers but would also to pick up an extra drain pump housing and lower and upper wash pump housing as well as a motor. i was hoping you might have those part numbers available as you are definately the supreme source of hobart info on this site!

i am not planning on ordering any parts at this time for any 18 or newer machine. i strictly am interested in the 15-17 series. i am going to hobart cincinnati tomorrow in person to talk to the guy who helped me today on the phone. he said he might be able to find these items without part numbers, plan on checkin it out anyway.

yea i'm lookin forward to that stainless tub 17, it is arriving next wednesday, i used a shipping co. called "u-crate it" and they were very reasonable. 200 bucks less than navis and very friendly to deal with. the navis people were rude so i didn't even consider them. i have the number for u crate if anyone is interested. my friend "dishwasher crazy" gave it to me yesterday.

so that's it, just pump and motor part numbers if ya got em, if you don't oh well, you've given me great info already and enabled me to stock up on pump seals today!

Part numbers

Peter, tell him to go to the WM series parts manuals. The WM 1, 2 and WmES3 are the same as your 15-17 machines give or take a few oddball items.

The motor for it from Hobart is way too expensive, You can get it from Ebay much more reasonably priced and it's the same item.

Any parts for the 18 thru 20 would be the WM5 or SR24 series pumps and motors.
Don't go buying a 4 way hydrosweep. I know I have a brand new one and a few used ones.
The top wash arm support for the 15's are probably nowhere to be found but again, maybe on Ebay or one of the guys here has one for you. The Hobart top housing for the WM series was one of the most significantly different items that was different from the 16-17 parts.
The machine originally came with the same parts as the 16-17 but it seems that the pump must have developed too much water force and would flip most of the bowls and cups and glasses in the bottom rack on the WM's. So they modified it and made it shorter in ht so the wash arm was closer to the tank bottom and thus further away from the dishware as well as modifying the support top where it was not as well seal where the washarm would sit and allowed alot more water to flow out under the washarm hub and back into the pump intake area. In addition, the fine mesh filtering system had a different screen in it.

A lot of storied history in those machines but once again, few of the current generation of Hobart employees in Troy or out here in the field know much if anything about the past.

They don't even include the UM series in training classes nor do they provide the parts manuals for them and a few other models in the binders anyone going to warwewashing school would get.

steve, i went to hobart in cincinnati yesterday and lucked out! the guy was really helpful and cooperative, giving me pages of photocopies on parts for the wm series as well as showing me the website, hobartservice.com where i can get all this info on line as well. i didn't realize that the wm series comercial machines used the same pump system as the 15-17's did! amazing! no wonder they were so great, they had same pumps as the comercials models! and hydrosweeps!

you were right, motors are 360 bucks! too much for me at this point. luckily i tested all motors for all the machines i have recently bought and they are all fine!

i am having trouble finding a lower drain pump for the 16-17 models as the wm used the style that was on the 15 series. reason being the 16's added the constant rise and the wm's had no need for that i guess, since there was no top rack. i don't really need a replacement but am going to keep checking around to see if i can find one. other than that i got everything i needed, seals, was impeller etc. with the exception of small ceramic washers that are used in assembly of the heater calrod in the sump. might be able to find these at a hardware store.

so all my kitchenaids will be running for a long time here!
