Those Braun machines are "big ass" !!

More so when you consider most if not many of certain models are soft mount machines. That is they are not bolted into concrete.

Had no idea but apparently there are limits when it comes to bolting down commercial washing machines. Something to do with weight of laundry and maximum G-force generated during spins. Suffice to say >300lbs of wet laundry spun to achieve greatest extraction can generate forces in a bolt down machine that can be felt throughout the entire building. This regardless of how many feet of concrete the thing is bolted into.

Last days of Holidays....
Got a NIB GE Iron (another of the many I already have) and tought..."hey, let's take some pics" with the Servis which is on duty today....
And of course.....I couldn't not take a video of the "spurting" we talked about....
Just sorry for the video quality...that steam was messing the phone lens.

Servis MK3 Model 42 Twintub...

"Lessiveuse Style", great minds think alike Freddy, good to see the Servis MK2 boiling away!!. Here is the next version the MK3 model 42 from 1966 boiling the nappies!! The Servis have smaller holes than the Philips and once the boiling gets under way the Perc effect continues unlike the Philips which Spurts!

Sorry for another off topic. I just wanted to share some pictures of our small and one and only Laundromat we have in my city. It is not much used. Most of all at the end of the season for washing duvets. Some wash rugs, working suits or for occasionals construction workers who live alone and have no washing machine.

These are Electrolux machines.

It's hard to generalise about Europe as there's never really been a single pan European way of heating water.

Here in Ireland instantaneous water heaters are relatively new to the scene.

Older homes here would have direct heated water using a boiler in the fireplace or the range that fed the water to a large copper storage cylinder (upstairs) in a wardrobe/closet with slatted shelves known here as a "hot press" (press = cupboard/closet in colloquial terminology here).

As the 20th century progressed those storage cylinders added electric "immersion heaters" a long element that either enters through the top or through the sides. They usually made use of cheaper night rate electricity to heat the full tank over night.

Most houses also have hydronic central heating (water circulating through radiators). So, normally the primary source of hot water is a heat exchange coil in the hot water cyclinder. Hot water is pumped through the coil and would typically be heated by natural gas, oil or occasionally solid fuel. Wood chip and solar is also making more of an impact these days.

The advantage of the system is that you can use multiple heat sources : gas/oil, solid fuels, electricity and renewables.

The latest systems typically have two sets of coils : one from the central heating system (gas or oil) and the other from a set of solar panels.

Normally for those indirect systems, a thermostat on the cylinder (storage tank) will send a signal to the central heating system opening a valve / starting pumps and firing the boiler as hot water is needed when the water temp in the tank drops.

In my house we've a two circuit condensing natural gas boiler with a modulating burner.
One circuit supplies the hot water to heat the radiators while the other provides the water to heat the heat exchanger in the hot water system.

When the hot tank is too cold the boiler goes into domestic hot water boost mode. It briefly closes the water flow to the radiators, cranks up the temperature to close to 90C and pumps that water through the heat exchanger to rapidly being the hot water system up to temperature.

It will then maintain that temperature using radiator temperature water.

We also retrofitted solar to the system too.

Stored hot water seemed common enough in France too. They often used electric systems or indirect systems and a very large, highly insulated storage tank often in a closet in the bathroom or in the kitchen / utility somewhere or the garage.

In many European countries (especially colder ones) district heating is common too. So hot water just arrives in as a utility or is indirectly heated in a local storage cylinder.

So, really I don't think you could argue that every country in Europe used local heaters or has no central hot water in homes. It's very varied, depending on where you are.

Most older washing machines sold here were also hot and cold fill.

I think the big change was largely down to a combination of manufacturers wanting to make a single version and also low water consumption machines often didn't benefit much from got fill anyway as by the time they were dull, they'd only have cleared the pipe lag to the storage tank.

Older European machines, much like their North American counterparts, used a LOT more water! They typically filled anything up to half way up the glass. Where as the new ones literally wash in a puddle and use scoops, pumps and/or very long cycles to achieve the results.

@iej

I must admit that the style of water heating for use with radiator panels, underfloor heating (etc), and the way it coexists and "shares" with the domestic water heating service is quite fascinating.

It sounds as though there are a multitude of operational modes that can suit the time of year, and best efficiency.

My idea (inspired by an old book from the UK, for kids, LOL) was that you used a boiler, which provided hot water for the boilers, plus a loop running to the domestic service to keep it continuously at temperature.

Then maybe you had a "booster element" in the domestic system to maintain temperature, in the Summer, when the boiler may be un-necessary.

I must also ask how effective the solar heating is? My idea of the UK was not a lot of sunny weather - but I suppose even a little would count for something. Electronic controls can probably minimise losses too*

*Something our solar water-heater manufacturers haven't caught onto. They will practically boil water in the Australian Summer, and do a good job in winter, too.

Unfortunately, there isn't even a mechanical thermostat like in your car to stop the flow of water to the panels once the temperature drops to a point where it would only be chilling the water as it sits in the storage on the roof... So water that was well above 60°C "last night," becomes lukewarm overnight.

Many if not most of countries in "Europe" have had a very large number of people who would historically live in town multifamiliar houses or ancient buildings adapted to sort of condos, not even single homes...including a whole rich lot of ancient buildings who would not have central hot water, but when lucky a point of use one (tank or not) wood, electric or gas powered in the bathroom only.
Take in exam whatever could be a typical medium town or otherwise city in France, Spain, Italy eastern europe and so forth...
Uk has also a different urbanization...
This of course unlike United States where most of population would historically live in indipendent homes and also made of different materials and style, and have a laundry area specifically designed for that purpose, when not the classic basement, classic American laundry location even before washers came along as it was where the furnace was... it's not historically so for many countries in Europe.

It's as clear as crystal that it wasn't the same in all of europe, so it's really impossible to generalize, but is also impossible not to talk generally without quoting all different factors...
Let's take in exam northern countries where you have much wider spaces and a very different architecture and urbanization..or southern countries.
Pretty much as what are current laundry locations each area/country is different and developed things differently, and some are litterally are a "mix"...but just think what is a typical laundry location in UK/IRE it was the kitchen, FR/IT/SP/GR... whenever it fits..northern countries instead tended to have their own laundry rooms or basement, this all *boils* down to all a series of factors which includes where and how hot water was available and reachable and where and how people would live.

What is now can be re-conducted to it.

Of course nobody speaks much of now....but it's a speech that goes back in time and how things developed.
Also..it's not a matter of central or point of use, as most of homes now of course do have a central one...and nobody ever argued that or that most of homes in Europe gets hot water that way as of today.

BUT
It is safe to say, that unlike the USA, many countries in Europe developed central hot water later and in many homes and circumstances it was simply not the norm or otherwise easily available where you needed it for laundry, hence they needed self-heaters to supply a demand that wasn't always or commonly to be taken for granted, unlike it happened in the US by the time first washing machines entered american homes...
This infact was why UK machines as the Hotpoint Empress , rather than the Fiat (westinghouse laundromat), Maytag wringers or Bendix..Thor etc.. automatics never took on around here commonly, nor did in France or these parts...people didn't know how to get hot water for them.
Case in point, UK/IR urbanization allowed most of people to have wood boilers and tanks and develop central hot water reachability commonly and sooner than other countries because of UK urbanization, infact UK is one of the countries where you would have early wringer washers and machines who were not equipped with an heater initially.. just unthinkable elsewhere not to, it's also one of the countries where until the 80s ALL machines had a hot&cold fill by default, which was optional of course, but commonly used... thing that never happened here where just a few had this option..and no machine kept it.

UK's WW and TT machines also started to get heaters as a plus then, and could be used as laundry boilers, then it became default except for some Hoovers.
Also because one assumes that despite UK weather firing a chimney or stove in July or August to get water hot nough for laundry wasn't always enjoyable for those who still relied on wood.. ...by this time in the US most people would have an automatic (gas, oil or electric) heater who would not heat the room up...it was less than a problem anyways..
Later
As in UK folks passed from the TT's to having an automatic under "everyone's" kitchen counter the heater gained even much more importance because of the machine type...a front loader...so it's been in all of europe.

Of course the fact of some current automatics not having much benefit from an hot-fill for what is a common "load and go attitude" and distance from water heater and low water use is why the hot fill machine are being eliminated even from UK market.
But that's a different matter.

I'm on the south coast of Ireland and most of the time the solar panels provide at least a good chunk of the hot water needs. We get enough sun on a clear day to produce plenty of heat. It's all about how you capture it.
I've a large south facing roof which means it gets sun all day.

In winter it's more or less useless as the days are quite short. It does provide some heat though and obviously on totally overcast days it's not too effective.

You have to remember the climate in Ireland and the UK is very variable. We definitely get "weather" more so than a "climate". There's sun most days, it's just that there's also a lot of showers. It's changing constantly.

So overall solar panels here serve to reduce the bills rather than outright replace gas / oil / electricity.

The system in my house is pretty typical of a suburban home here (although solar panels are a new / optional extra).

We basically have a high efficiency condensing gas boiler with two circuits passing through it. The main circuit is for radiators. There's a manifold which ensures the water goes out in a balanced way and 3 circulating pumps and non return valves.

There are thermostats in each area of the house (wireless so they can be placed in the middle of rooms).

The signals from the stats go back to a control box which has relays that bring the pumps in/out as needed and also fire the boiler when there's a demand for heat.

The hot water circuit works like this:

A stat on the storage cylinder will pick up when the water is colder than a set point (60C) and sends a signal to the control system. That activates a diverter valve in the boiler, and it goes into rapid heat mode where it circulates water at 90C+ through the heat exchanger. This very rapidly brings the hot water tank up to temp.

The loop through the hot water tank is a separate ciecuit with its own circulating pump.

Once it's reached the set point, the system goes back to normal mode & hears the radiators (if there's a demand).

Water to the sinks and showers goes through a safety premix valve to prevent scalds. It means the storage tank can be kept a bit hotter than would be skin safe to prevent bacteria growth.

The gas boiler basically is just a condensing model that has a modulating burner. It means it can run at various burner levels a bit like turning the valve up and down on a stove.

It measures the temp of the water on the flow (out) and return (in) side of the circuit which allows it to figure out how much heat is being used by the radiators or the hot water cylinder. If the heat loss is high, it cranks up the burner to match. If it's low, it can turn it down to a glimmer.

This means you don't have on/off cycling and is generally better for the system and much more efficient.

We also have an element in thr tank which can be used if the boiler is off. We hardly ever use it as heating electrically is more expensive but, it's handy as a back up I guess!

It's more of a throw back to the original system which dates from about 1976. That would have largely heated wirh electricity in the summer and oil in the winter.

Wood boilers would be pretty much unheard of here until the recent craze of wood stoves in the 2000s for decorative reasons. As a fuel wood hasn't ever been common place in Ireland or Britain as there are no serious forests and no history of using it as a fuel since before the industrial revolution.

Historically, heating was done by coal (and even turf in Ireland and Scotland) burnt in ranges and fireplaces with backboilers.

Pre 20th century heating here was done with a fireplace in every room. Even pretty modest homes had fireplaces in very room and they all burnt coal! So you can only imagine what the air quality must have been like in towns and cities in the 1800s!

By the 1950s here a lot of homes (in Ireland anyway, Britian may be different) were built with laundry rooms. The washing machine and dryer usually "live" in the utility room (often off the kitchen) and sometimes in 1940s homes off the yard as a fully separate outhouse. Some houses have laundry appliances in the kitchen but, it's not as common a location as in Britian and it would be relatively unusual in newer homes (post 1950s). Even in apartments it's more likely you'll find a laundry closet than a machine in the kitchen here.

The vast majority of post WWII homes here were heated with gasoil hydronic heating systems using pressure jet burners. They're almost always located in a small shed / boiler house next to the house with pipes actually crossing underground to the house itself! The boiler was a compact washing machine sized device with a full chimney flue, often built as a stand alone stack, but sometimes actually a chimney attached to the house or on a little shed to make it "cute"

The logic of this was to prevent fire risks with older heating systems and also to cut noise as older pressure jet boilers rumble quite a bit. If you've ever heard one operating, it's a very distinctive sound that used to frighten me as kid in suburban Dublin. There was always a door at the back of houses with a big louvered panel, strange clicking noises, lights visible through the door and a big loud rubble very few mins :)

These days rural homes tend to have a "heat pack" which is a self-contained outdoor boiler. It is housed in a weatherproof, heavily insulated metal box a which is just put in the garden and connected to the house with heavily insulated underground pipes. Typically they have a "frost stat" which will fire the boiler if there's any risk of freezing.

Natural gas only arrived in Ireland in the 1970s when we discovered gas wells odd the south coast and that's when gas fired central heating started to become very popular. In most cases it replaced oil fired boilers but the actual heating systems haven't changed much at all in a very long time.

We've had "town gas" (gasified coal or oil) since the dawn of that technology, but it wasn't generally used for central heating for some reason (possibly too expensive to burn like that).

LPG is also used quite a bit in rural areas for central heating and cooking (and drying sometimes too - you can buy whirlpool and Maytag US style gas dryers here. They're popular enough in larger rural homes. They actually partner very well with a high capacity European washer with a fast spin! Your laundry is dry in no time!

We had a push of electric storage heating for a while in the 69s and 70s but it's extremely inefficient as most of our electricity is generated from natural gas (35% is now wind power though). We from heating is pretty rare nowadays (although it's sometimes installed by cheap landlords renting to students etc because it's cheap to retrofit to old buildings)

Ireland's development patterns are completely out of whack with continental Europe though. We've a preference for large homes, individual houses and quite a bit of spread and space. A lot of rural / outer suburban homes tend to be fairly sprawling and there's tons of "one off" homes on large sites (1/2 acre - 2 acre kind of spaces).

Only 3% of the population lives in apartments and there's actually a bit of a cultural "allergy" to the concept. I'm not sure why, but the aim here is always buy a house, with as much space as possible.
I guess maybe being English speaking we've just got more in common with other anglophone countries when it comes to these things.

The EU regularly spanks us over our "insane" development "plans" but, I think it's a political and democratic choice. We like our space and I've a feeling it goes back to notions of landownership too. History here is little hot & firey when it come to people owning their own land - whole British feudal landlord system was fairly dramatically thrown out in the 19th and early 20th century... So, I think we've very much got a "my home is my castle" mentality and I can't see that ever changing.

There's definitely a strongly individualistic steak though and I don't see it changing!

Amazing though how you can tell a lot about socioeconomic History and politicial attitudes of a country by just looking at the plumbing and laundry habits lol :)

Compare Ireland : totally individualistic central heating on a per house basis
To Nordic countries : communal efforts in urban areas - district heating.
To Eastern Europe : apartments with district heating.

Coal is just very very old wood ;)

It's basically illegal to burn (buy, sell or store) it in cities and larger towns here for air quality reasons.

In rural places you're more likely to encounter turf and more as a cozy / decorative / nostalgic thing than a primary source of heat.

Hi Washer111

The new Solahart Thermosyphon systems do have a temp valve that stops circulation these days, its the models that have the longer warranty. In some models they've doubled the amount of tubing in the collectors which is great for winter, but for summer they then needed a way to stop the water circulating. They call it HartStat Over Thermal Protection.

The Split systems like we have at home control the tank temperature by the pump controller. Once the tank gets to 80degC the pump will only cycle occasionally to prevent the water in the panels boiling. If you're away for days and the temp in the tank gets really high, it'll start circulating water at night to let heat out of the tank and get it back down to 80degC.

Having said all of that, Mum has a 40yo 300L thermosiphon unit and with just her she has no issues with boiling during summer. Its a north facing panel, but perhaps that our summer days are shorter than at your latitude it reduces the solar gain just enough to prevent that.

Regards

Nathan

"The federation of wood burning stove enthusiasts are a very laid back bunch!"

Well...I've a thing for wood stoves also...can't say to be a full-time entuxhiast, but I like them to bits.

Anyway...returning to the speech, the gasoil hydronic heating systems were what used to be common here also in individual homes (which are not much common), or town condo-like built or remodeled past world war, especially badly bombed ones, that has been an occasion where things could be changed..of course it was one who fed all the building's radiators and taps.
But by that time, so after WWII (more like 50s) central hot water was a *MUST* to be put in newer built homes.
Before that, and for the many homes who were untouched by bombs there were stoves, chimneys or the dear gas powered wall convectors or otherwise called stoves/heaters...and for hot water, initially wood/coal tanks in bathroom, replaced by gas, who was replaced by electric sometimes or insta gas ones.

And so was till someone provided to his own place remodeling...the more wealthy you were, the sooner you would get up-to-date.
Many older homes in town over here still have that kind of setting, I think of the former boarding school convent down my street that has been transformed into apartments sometime in the early 40s...depending on the apt you'll find one for both kitchn and bathroom (if they're close to each other) or two different heaters..and gas convectors instead of the common radiators..and yes also flumes for what once was common..a wood stove in each room.

As for machines away from the house, that is something you may see in very old individual homes of some small town...what is a "casa di paese"..but it's not the norm..
WOW...I feel like I could continue for hours telling all the differences in architecture, urbanization and reasons why... as it's all connected and result of history.
As you say you can tell alot even by these simple things, because the way we live and what is, is the result of different stories, a chain of reasons that made it so....and each place has it's own...which is fascinating to reason, learn and talk about..it's all culture after all.

Or here,(downtown my town, wealthy folks living in historical downtown condo-like homes on the "corso")

Or here:

Which is where 70-80% of italians typically live...along with modern mid 70s modern condos (condos-boom) like this (wealthy-to mid class):
http://imagestc.trovacasa.net/annun...7358003/appartamento-in-vendita-a-valenza.jpg
Or newer...those have central hot water...(wealthy folks)

Newer condos like this typically now are quipped with individual water and heating gas heaters on the balcony:
http://cf.immobiliarebroker552.it/sites/default/files/40 particolare caldaia sul balcone.jpg
These ones are also used in cases like link 3,4 and 5 whenever the building went through some total internal re-modelling...otherwise what you find is point of use heater and central heating for radiators..if not gas heaters and not even radiators.
Historical antique fancy buildings like this one in the Corso downtown Milan probably are the kind of condo-like that went through constant total remodeling in early days and even though old you may have had developpd an earlier central water system...or individual...rare, but as you can tell this is for wealthy folks...

There're much more building types and settings to drive you nuts....

Oh...and US gas dryers dealers are a huge thing here too..too bad not all have the space and means.
Usually who buys a gas dryer will also purchase a US toploader..as by being hot fill allow great saving on electricty, so dear over here...and being totally amazed by cleaning results...often is rich people who don't mind expenses considering a set goes around 3000 euros, 1500 for the dryer only

Of course there're those who will purchase just the dryer, and even though space and money expense may be an issue, they'll do everything to have a US dryer...even climb it!
So if you thought in Ireland you were weird for having FL matching a US dryers, just look at a typical italian setting LMAO!

"typical italian setting"

I would rather say that that is not a typical italian setting.
If you want to say what is typical you have to take into account the large majority of the people.
And in Italy the absolute majority of the population have a European front loader. Those that have a dryer have a European dryer.
Yes there will also be those who decide to buy an American dryer, but as a percentage the number is irrelevant.
Those are exceptions and not something typical.

Yes...
Typical italian setting...of ones who will purchase an American dryer, it was for granted..
O_o

And that was in response to him about this matter.
But in any case...that was for a laugh! That's not much typical to stack a rear panel machine! LOLOLOLOLOL
But believe me that whoever can would do everything to have one.
Beside that, what's typical Italian is stacking, as space is often an issue, what many folks, the lucky ones who can have a dryer will likely do is putting the dryer on the top...if you stack an american dryer or not, that always stacking is...
For that reason newer front panel models are what is starting being distribuited..though more expensive than basic rear-control models.
Also...
The number of people owning a dryer in this country is already irrilevant per-se...forget gas dryers that are so expensive and need gas hook ups and venting...which is not possible in most of cases...

Not sure if you didn't follow or what...

Hi Nathan,

Thanks very much for that information. I was aware they were using a "split" setup, particularly for a lot of new-builds these days, which have electronic-logic in them.

With that HartStat system, does it work in reverse for cooler conditions, or just to prevent boiling on days with large solar-gain?

Our system, installed back in 2013, was the slightly more expensive model utilising a closed-loop heating system, for protection against freezing and hard water conditions.

I'm not sure how resistant to boiling this fluid is - although in this instance, it heats the "walls" of the tank, rather than in the traditional setup where the hot water is the heating fluid as well.

Over this side, we're officially beyond the 26th Parallell (North-West), and not far beyond the Tropic of Capricorn.

The water heater and ducted A/C both drain into the sewerage vent for the bathrooms on the roof - although it hasn't been uncommon to see a lot of steam billowing in the Summer months, particularly a small quantity of water has been used from the tank.

Unfortunately, I can't give you an official temperature figure... The water entering the house is tempered to 50º. If the water up there is really get beyond 80º, I wonder how that might affect the longevity of the tempering device?

More info:

For what concerns gas dryers in general.....
That's also why some dealers started carrying asian Ultra-compact models from Rinnai, along with White knight machines from UK.
All dealers here typically started carrying US machines, and for most that dates back before the HE "craze" started in the US...what you had available were rear control classic machines, it's only recently that they started importing and having gas dryers with front panels, indeed meant to match front loaders and be stacked...operated with no probs.
Dealers of gas dryers are in costant growth...also thanks to their presence in fairs throughout Italy.
What stops many potential buyers is the impossibility to vent or a gas hook up...for the space issue they started offering those compact models...they're dear as well.
If one can is of course suggested to buy an american model...dealers are honest in this...and first ones saying there's no comparison...also mostly because what is also advertised is the fact that US dryers because of their bigger drums, will cut ironing...
You can read many reviews of people who are entuxhiast just about this aspect alone...and couldn't read one single negative one, some dealers were so sure of a positive response they would take their van come to your house offering a week-long trial for free.
Unfortunately as I stated not all and not even the most can have this "privilege", it's already a "privilige" being able to fit a dryer in this country..a big one, or one that requires nearby gas hook up or venting is something indeed "rare" to be able to have...just the venting aspect alone is what stopped many potential buyers in buying a dryer, back in the days of early italian dryers...and those who could, ended up rarely using the thing because of energy costs.
Rather surely the main reason why the condenser dryer took on for the most was indeed the impossibility for venting.
Gas dryers, being also something you don't typically find sold in your average appliance shop, makes of it of course an elite-appliance, as much as was owning a side-by-side refrigerator back in 80s and 90s...which you found indeed in dealers only, dealers who also offered US toploaders and gas dryers, sure not as common and as "much" as who now deals in gas dryers.
As you can understand, those who will purchase a US gas dryer, are folks who can afford it, and likely not having money issues more prone to have less space issues...
Me...I'm not particularly rich, got mine second hand from an unique circumstance...nor live in castle like house (for now)...what I did is fitting mine in my kitchen/living room, very next to sofa, would have gladly put it in the bathroom next to washer..but no hook up nearby...
When mom had our filter-flo shipped from US she also discussed getting a dryer...but the only place available is where mine is now,so we kept having the euro electric dryers...she refused categorically to have guests next to a dryer...me I simply don't give a rat's..and if it bothers you, then GTHO my house!
LOL But that's me.
I bless the day the Speed Queen entered in service in my home....and so does my neighbor after seing mine..she bought a set (her apt is double the size of mine)..and still thanks me now.

Self heating launderette machines

Are sadly not that common due to the huge amount of energy needed as some of them have 6kw heaters to allow them to be fast cycled, If you find an establishment with self heating machines then let everyone know as I have found that even machines with a temp selector have bridging across the thermostat terminals to make the washer think its reached its set temp. I have never seen a launderette with domestic machines in situ I will of course keep my eyes open.
I have a lot of white laundry and Persil non bio is by the best at high temps and Ariel for non white washing its now back to being a good all rounder as the stain additives have gone off the shelf and back in to the product so no need to purchase separately anymore.

I had a chat with my 85 year old grand aunt this morning about how they used to do laundry back in the day and it was surprisingly not very complicated.

She said they mostly used Rinso. You just put a "good dollop" of it into the bottom off the washing machine. Filled the machine 2/3 way up with hot water (not too hot but hand hot). Put clothes in and switched on.

She said she never used bleach but sometimes used Persil or Omo.

If collars were really dirty she just soaked them for longer (went out and did her shooing or went to work and left them in the machine all day)

She started out with a Hoover Twin tub, then moved to a Hotpoint Toploader Automatic which she said was fast but really hard on the clothes and damaged a lot of her favourite items which is why she got rid of it.

Then got a Bendix Autowasher and matching dryer sometime in the 1970s.

She said basically she never boiled anything at any stage other than tea towels and that was more for hygiene reasons and usually just in a large pot on the stove with dish detergent.

She said the biological powders were very good when they came out first as they just worked more reliably and you no longer had any issues with stains or collar marks.

Seems her preference was Omo, then Persil Bio or Ariel.

She currently likes Persil Small & Mighty liquid as it smells good and she finds the powders way too harsh on the clothes. Only uses them for doing her towels and bed linen (if it's white or cream).

So doesn't really sound like the laundry habits here were THAT radically different to today really other than the machines changing from top to front loading.
