Never underdries, perhaps; but NEVER overdries?!? That is a clothes cooker. Unlike a lot of other time-temp auto dry controls, there was no flexibility in the setting, no "more dry" or "less dry". There was no Delicate, Normal or Heavy. It was just screaming red hot bone dry.

Glad you started this thread, Tom. I wanted to point out that 1958 was a great year for console design/styling. There are some real beauties. Thanks to various AW members who posted these photos found in a Google Images search.

It was not that they ran hot. They had different heats and the timed cycle allowed not only the selection of different heats, but also the ability to set the timer to a suitable drying time for the fabrics and load being dried, thus avoiding gross over drying and overheating. By pushing the red DRY button, the auto dry thermostat terminated the cycle at an air temperature of something like 250F, which, yes, is considered a slow oven in baking terminology.

The last 5 minutes of "no heat" tumble seemed skimpy. I remember how hot the early spacemate dryers were.

We had a 53

When I was growing up, if I remember correctly, it had 3 heats,I don't remember it being too hot, I know it dried the clothes fairly quickly though.

How dry I am Westy !!!

I saw one of those on YouTube a while back. One video was an old add and one was someone's project. When the little xylophone played how dry I am, it just knocked me out. Man, that's just too cool for school. Definitely on the wish list.
