Were you able to open the lid after adding the detergent, bleach and softener or would everything disappear in the washer then?

We have this exact machine in the museum in a fully functional state, it works as intended. And yes, you can definitely open the lid when the additives are in there without losing anything they stay in their compartments until they are flushed out with water during the cycle.
This was a feature they didn’t continue that long. It was a little bit gimmicky and really didn’t do anything that a lady Kenmore the same period does.
The thing that seems silly about it is when you’re dumping the detergent in through the detergent opening it was just going right through the lid into the filter pan so it was a little neater to just dump the detergent into the filter pan with the lid opened, lol

In the 1975 catalog, the Dispensall model is WWA8500, in the 1976 catalog it's WWA8508. I do not have a copy of 1974 so I can't say exactly when this model was introduced, but the text of the 1975 catalog implies that it was a new offering that year.

The earliest date I've seen on these is June, 1973. It appears the WWA8500 was available when the P series machines were introduced, either as fully 1973 models or introduced for 1974.
I found this machine in avocado along with the matching large door dryer years ago that was then supposed to go to Drew when he was still in Reno. I don't know if they ever made it out West...

1976 Dispensall
I have a 1976 model. Dispensall function on this machine was lost some time before I got it. I imagine the timer was swapped at some point. The diverting mechanism is gone. This one was total crusher material but I revived it and it’s a good machine.

Good information - thanks for the pic. Two comments about my "source" for questions like this:
My "catalogs" are Sweets inserts, which were printed for the construction industry, including architects and designers. As such, they do not include the absolute totality of GE's (or anyone else's) line. So just because a particular model doesn't show up doesn't mean it didn't exist. In GE's case, they usually included a broad-enough range of appliances to offer the contractor a decent selection.
Sweets inserts would have been printed at the outset of the model year (new Sweets usually arrived during the first quarter of the calendar year), so if newer features and/or models were introduced during the year, they wouldn't be included in the catalog. I'm guessing that this would be the case for the Dispensall washers. Between the limited amount of information and the early printing date, my 1973 catalog doesn't include this washer. But, as Ben has shown us, it did exist during the 1973 model year.

You're welcome. Ironically, after going back to the original thread from when I found the Dispensall set and grabbing the serial numbers, both the washer and dryer were made in June, 1973.
