Looking for input on your favorite footwear. I have a love hate relationship with casual and athletic shoes. Things start off great but gradually taper off to the point I would rather not wear shoes.

Nike, New Balance, Sketchers, Vans, Merrell. Feels like I have run the gambit.

Thoughts?

I have always bought Reebok, as they seem to fit me best. The only time I wear them is in the gym, otherwise I wear sandals, loafers, or at work I wear Dansko clogs.

A lot of my co-workers really like Saucony running shoes, I may try them next time I need a pair

New Balance

They have always fit me well and they last. Seem to be available in a wider range of widths too if thats a factor.

I like how NB identifies each shoe with a number and they tend to make that design year after year. With Nike it always seemed like I found a shoe I liked and 8 months later I have to try to replace it with a different one.

I like that they don't shell out as much for athlete endorsements too. I want a shoe not a costly connection to Michael Jordan...

I'm in the market now, and it'll be interesting to see what I get...

The shoes I need to replace are New Balance. I wasn't 100% happy when new--they didn't quite seem right for my feet. But I won't argue with the life--they have lasted. I also liked the fact that they still made shoes in the US.

For years, though, my approach was buy the cheapest thing that seemed to fit. Probably not the best strategy, at least as far as my feet were concerned. Shoes didn't seem super long lasting, either, although it's hard to say--I used to walk a lot more than I do now. I hate to admit it, but I am half considering this approach again. I am sold on the idea of decent shoes--indeed, as I've tried some attractively cheap shoes, I've noted that some even brand new don't seem as good as the shoes I need to replace. (It's not just a "broken in" or "familiar" issue.) But...cash flow isn't that great, and I'm not walking very much these days, past what I do while running errands. The drawback: I'll probably want to walk a bit more come summer.

One thing I'm interested in trying is specialist store. There is one near me, and I've heard claims that the staff there can help one get a better shoe match than by going to the mass market chain sports store. It would be at least interesting to visit them, although as specialists, the prices might me cringe... Still...for the serious walker/runner, or person who has huge trouble getting workable shoes, that place might be worth every penny.

Brooks  - one of the best I've ever had, and I've tried them all.  I wear them all day, most every day.   That said, shoes are a very individual preference and need to be right for you.

The best thing to do is go to a specialized running shoe store and have them evaluate your gait, stance and weight distribution.  They will be able to guide you to the correct shoe and size it properly.  I learned a long time ago it pays off to buy local (from a locally owned shop) and follow their advice.

Good luck and enjoy your new shoes!

I've never done the gait analysis at a running store, though I may be tempted to do that once my weights back down a bit more. However, I've found recently that Adidas Duramo 5's are near perfect fit for me and pretty supportive, so I have bought a couple of pairs to keep me going for a while. I have larger feet, plus they're broad and I need decent arch support, and those things don't always combine nicely.

One of my colleague's, who does a lot of running, says he does the same thing - he'll have his gait analysed, find a pair that work well and buy several of them while they're on sale. That then does him for a while.

I stomp around a warehouse with a cement floor all day. When I got my first pair of New Balance sneakers it felt like I bought new feet! I have good luck with the New Balance model 512. I have 2 pairs so I can alternate them every other day.

Hi-top Reeboks

Used to wear Nike until I got my first pair of Reebok hi-tops when I was a sophomore in high school and have been wearing them ever since...especially since they still make them called Reebok Classic...just like 1986 all over again.  I wear them at the hospital as well for the ankle support.  Just got my first pair of Adidas basketball hi-tops last week...Adidas owns Reebok so I thought I'd see.  I have a pair of black Reeboks I got on closeout several years ago that I don't wear very often...they still look good...but they wear better than any pair I've ever had.  These new Adidas have the same cushioning sole so I thought I'd try them...I believe they will wear great.  Nike and Asics don't fit me and I don't like NB's.
