Here is a picture of my mates old powerpoint washer that he has dumped out in his garden sorry for the bad quality of the photo, its sad to see a good machine like this go to waste when it was probably an easy fix.

Looks like a Philco of Italy unit.
This washer is very simmilar to Electrolux LE750.

all those powerpoints are antonio merloni machines, powerpoint is now made by service which is owned by merloni(indesit)my step mums one was the same as in the pic i posted only it had three buttons instead of two. great machine. only took about 40 mins to do a cottons 40 cycle.

There are two different branches of the Merloni family tree - long split - one is Antonio Merloni, the other formerly called Merloni Elettrodomestici (now called Indesit Company) - they are separate firms:
Antonio Merloni produces washers that are sold under a variety of brands - Servis being the most common in the UK and Ireland, Ardo in italy etc, and provide machines for others to market - including some independent store brands (like Electra), and brands for smaller regional markets like Powerpoint in Ireland (and quite probably Snowcap that you mention in another message). Antonio Merloni has a controlling interest in Asko (quite a different type of machine to its own product...known as Maytag in the UK and Ireland).
There isn't a commercial connection between Antonio Merloni and Indesit - they are separate companies and manufacturing entities, and their machines are very different.

IIRC, the spilt is due to the father, Merloni senior originally splitting up his company between two sons. Came upon this when doing research before purchasing a Malber washer years ago. At that time Malber's units had something along the lines of "COPA Swiss" or some such listed as the manufacturer on the electrical plate inside the drain pump cover.
Being as all this thread may, old Malber units sold in the United States weren't that bad. Nothing fancy, especially compared to Miele, but did the job. Hundreds of not thousands of Malber washing machines and washer dryer combo units were sold in NYC, and apparently gave good service. Only chucked mine (gave away on Craigslist),when the Miele arrived. Even then it worked fine, just needed to have the inlet checked as water sometimes came into the machine slowly.

What you have to realise though with Antonio Merloni machines is that they vary in quality as that company covers a huge range of price points.
Their low end machines that are sold ultra cheap as re-badges by the likes of Powerpoint are pretty dire. If you pay a little over €200 for a washing machine, you wouldn't want to expect much. They are C H E A P. The target market is often those people who are 'flipping' property or supplying low end rental acomodation. Whacking in a very BOL washer/dryer means that they can say "Has washer and dryer" (lies) on the property websites.
Typically, you're looking at such a machine giving between 2 and 5 years service before it will catastrophically breakdown.
If that's what you're looking for, i.e. a semi-disposable washer that might be wrecked by the students renting your apartment, these machines are ideal!
When they move out you can simply get a new one.
The budget end of the indesit (hotpoint/ariston), electrolux via Tricity Bendix and candy ranges also fill this niche nicely.
