Hello, I am new member to this site and LOVE this forum!

After reading many of the posts, I see people recommending to use powder detergent in Front Load Washers. I have a two year old LG FL Washer and only use Tide HE Liquid. I have never had a problem with build-up or mold. Is the recommendation to use powdered detergent for cleaning performance or something else?

Thanks, and HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! :)

detergent

powder does clean a little better all around, and is cheaper, i used both tide liquid and powder HE when i had my LG front loader, usually liquid is better on grease stains while powder is better on things like ground in dirt mud and clay. powder is all i use now, and with my whites i no longer use chlorine bleach, i just use tide powder with oxiclean packets with great results.

Morning Jeff....

I think it really depends where you are and the availability of good products to be honest.

Liquid seems to be used far more than powder in the US than other parts of the world.

My experience both with using and observing others comments here has been that:

- liquids tend to be harder to rinse out
- unless a machine has siphon style inserts for the dispenser drawer, you can't use the pre-wash cycle
- they are messy (yuck)
- because of their 'make-up' people can be more likely to have a mouldy machine (though they need to do other things too to achieve this such as using cool washes, fabric conditioner and keeping the door closed!)
- they tend to have scents I don't like
- you may end up using other additives with them that many powders don't need such as bleach

If you would like to experiment with a powder, I'd go right for one of the best straight away....get some PERSIL...Yes, it is expensive, but you should be able to get fantastic results with less than the recommended dose AND not have to use additional chemicals too....

BUT, should you go to a powder from a liquid after using one for 2yrs, the first wash you do should be....

- no clothes
- maximum temperature and cycle length
- 1/2 dose of powder....

....to clean the machine out.

@jjsunshine

Ronhic makes a great suggestion here, try the Persil.
I'm new to this forum as well, and there has been much said about this detergent ,and after just buying it and using it myself I find it has been the best so far.Even the machine works differently no suds on the door and has no problem with rinsing, the rinse water is clearest yet with Persil.
It costs more, but the dosing amount helps keep that in perspective and will surprise you with the end results clean clothes no residue. And as Ronhic suggests after using a liquid for so long it will help reduce any build up between the wash basket and outer drum of your machine.

Cheers and Welcome :)

I also have an LG front loader. Our water is pretty hard.

I use Tide HE liquid for colors (1 oz with 1 TBSP of STPP).

For light colors and whites, I use Persil Universal Megaperls with STPP and am extremely happy with the results. (3 TBSP Persil and 1 TBSP STPP). I love Persil. Persil is a great product and I can get excellent cleaning performance with this dosing scheme and save money at the same time.

The rinses are very clean with the above dosing scheme.

I have not had problems with mold or odor in any of the front loading machines I have owned. (One Maytag Neptune and two LGs.) I think it is because I do not use too much detergent, leave the door open and clean the tub with bleach on a monthly basis.

more a religion than solid facts

In some web sites like this and others, a few folks swear that liquid detergent somehow degrades the aluminum FL washer's spider quicker than powder.

Here I have really had little issues with powders or liquids in my 1976 FL Westinghouse or 2010 LG FL washer

Well right now the long winded text I typed disappears once I hit "update and preview"; I will try another browser

I guess today I am locked out with writing more than 2 sentences. I tried a Mac and PC with Firefox.

Here is an image of the text I tried to post
