Hello - My Whirlpool top loader recently finished a load with a few smudges of a grease of some sort in several spots near the bottom of the tub so I'm considering a new machine. Since real Maytag Dependable Cares are no longer available, I'm considering a Speed Queen, (not ready to move away from a traditional top-loader. I'm thinking of the AWN432 because it has two speeds, and a second rinse option.

Does anyone have any experience with the new SQ top loaders? Do they do a spin-drain or neutral drain first? Doe they do spin-sprays?

Thanks!

Speed Queen

Hi Leonard

I have the AWN552 that's for export markets and for the Australian market they actually have a neutral drain, but those models available in the US have a spin-drain.

Mine is great and i don't think you'll be sorry if you ended up getting one. There are many video's on youtube that myself and others have posted of their models in action.

Cheers
Leon

I recently started researching new TL washers. Had a Maytag Bravos for 1 week and returned it. I am currently waiting on a new 542. There are several issues discussed several threads down. I don't think you will be disappointed from what I have read. Nelson

Why the grease spots?

Might it just be a buildup of detergent and/or fabric softener residue inside the agitator or in the outer tub? Before condemning the washer, look at these parts and clean them if necessary.

Build-up

I don't use fabric softener, so it's not that. I usually use liquid Arm & Hammer and I double rinse most stuff so I think it's unlikely. I did notice when I got the machine that unless you remove the agitator fabric softer dispenser mildew builds up inside that area, so I long ago removed the dispenser. Perhaps I should remove the agitator...if I could figure out how!

Speed Queen

i have had 2 speed queens and you will never find a machine as solid and as hard working and reliable as speed queen. they are great and u can wash just about anything in them. so do yourself a favour and make what could be the vest investment of your life and get a speed queen and maybe the matching dryer too? ;)

Direct Drive.

Inside the agitator's middle, there should be a plastic cap, remove it. Below that, there should be a bolt, remove it too. Pull the agitator up from the bottom. Don't hit yourself in the face with it.

You have a 2-piece agitator. The upper part has the corkscrew blades. It will pull off the lower portion with the fins on the base so long as the bolt is out. Look inside and see what you find. Be mindful of the ratcheting cams in the middle. That assembly is what drives the upper portion of the agitator. If you loose the dogs, they'll run you about $4.00 for a new set. The Direct Drive is a good washer. It's reliable, easy to work on, and has a long and solid reputation.

Dave

PS: The agitator dogs are part #80040, in case you need them.

Nothing wrong with a  couple of $100.  Tags hanging around,  they are so therapeutic.  The one Peter posted looks like a plug & play machine. alr
