Does anyone know where would be a good place to find a metal Rid-Jid spread wing knee Room ironing board? I have been watching ebay. The new ironing boards are masde so cheap! These were from the 1950's and 60's.
Thanks

Where can you buy jumbo covers?

I've found that if you don't have a current "standard" ironing board, you'll be forced to make a cover yourself, and they're not difficult to make!

Since I've always had 40's - 50's ironing boards, both wood and metal, I too found that the "standard" covers would never fit for various reasons.

If you do decide to make a cover, I've found that a tight weaved, heavy canvas cloth works the best (be sure to wash it it first in warm-hot water and dry it on the warmest setting. If the canvas doesn't shrink before your sew it, you'll have a heck-of-a-time trying to attach it to your board after you wash it once!). If you do make a cover, be sure NOT to use any foam padding. If the iron is too hot, it can melt onto the ironing board, or worse, catch fire. A very heavy cotton or wool batting material works best for your pad. You can find all of this at any local fabric store. I usually hit the remnant racks first, then meander through the various rows.

Rid-Jid, memories!

When I was little and could not go outside because of bad weather if mother had the ironing board out I would pull those little yellow "Rid-Jid" cork plugs out of the board and play with them. Mother would just about kill until I put them back. Often wondered what the hell "Rid-Jid" meant, anyway years ago she got tired and bought a new one (cheap junk) and I keep the "Rid-Jid" that her sister gave to my mom as a wedding gift in 1955. Solid chrome with yellow rubber foot pieces and those corks, and signature yellow woven top surface. Purchased at Hutzler's in Baltimore for $13.95!

I think someone told me they were made by AC Coates, people that made alot of sewing materials, not sure?

Oversized Ironing Boards

I don't know how big these vintage boards are but I know that Rowenta makes an oversized board. I have seen these covers at Target and at Sam's along with the regular ones. Might be something to check out.

vintage ironing boards

Those new ironing boards are really bad, they tip over very easy and can damage your vintage iron,so I was at an estate sale the other day and at noon everything was free, they had two ridgid boards,so I got the best one, wish I had gotten both,It was before i read this thread, then the next week at an estate sale I found a new in the package vintage ironing board cover, hope it fits,I hate to iron but if I have to I would like to have the best ironing board,it also came with the vintage iron cord holder that keeps the cord up out of the way. ARVIN doesn't wobble

The current modern ironing board I was using (and it's subsequent modern replacement) have enough wobble to drop the iron if you bump it.
The ARVIN board I bought looks like new after a good wash, has great chrome and is solid as a rock. Can't get it to wobble.
I'm planning on making a new board cover ASAP. Gosh how I hate buying modern CR*P!!
