This is a parts donor for sure but it does run. Most of the grunge is just dirt. Agitator spins like mad when going into spin but agitates just fine. $10 at an estate sale, easy hauling so what the heck. Best part is my roomate and his pose here with the machine. He must have been around enough of us not to just do the pose, he had no coaching from Dad! LOL

A family down the street had that washer. Timer had quit working properly by 1965 or 1966. My cousins had the matching dryer to this. Didn't Nate have this same washer--the kenmore from hell?

1962 KENMORE 70

That machine would restore very well, but they are a lot of work to do. These were very a popular model for Sears in the day and fairly long lived as many of them made it into the 1970s which was good in those days. Its funny that now if someone has a crappy Frigidare FLer that only lasts 9 years they complain up a storm.

A nice addition...

To being a great guy is that he is a personal trainer and is currently in a body building competition. I thought I was strong but if he is pulling the machine up the stairs and I am below I almost have to run to catch up to it! Nice perk for a roomate in addition to being like family to me!

Underneath the withered appearance is one beauty of a washer. It's appearance is very much like another 1961 model that Gordon has, that was originally found by Roanoke Robert and Mark (LightedControls) in Virginia. If I recall, Roanoke Robert has this 62 model, and the matching dryer as daily drivers. Thanks for sharing the photo. I can imagine what a heavenly experience it would be to see this washer run.

Have a good one,
Jamss

Roommate and washer

As stated, your roommate looks quite fine. Additionally, that Kenmore looks exactly like my very earliest memories of Mom's washer, hopefully you'll post many more pics of it as you work on it. I want to see closeups of the water temp knob, the filter and the silver release knob, etc, a few exact and very very old memories--
And if your roommate walks into the camera range, what the heck!

Will work on more pics...

Yes, this is a suds saver, anyone who has seen my collection knows that somehow most everything I have found has that option, just the way it has rolled! Actually this parts donor might be in line for a complete restoration, not by me however! Enough projects on my plate!

Restore

Yes, please give it a good cleaning and post additional pix as you strip it down.

( the washer, not the room mate )

There is an active thread featuring a 1962 Kenmore 70 dryer that would match this washer, but I think the ad may have expired. If it has, hopefully the somebody that comes to my mind has seen it. I must say it would be great to have a matched set of 62s right next to a pair of 61s in his collection.

I would have posted about it sooner, but I did a running glance through the threads the other day, and decided to post later.

That is the same machine my Grandma had.. would love to see

She worked in the Credit Department at the local Sears store. When she moved in with us in 1970 and rented her house, we swapped that machine with our older Maytag automatic. We kept that machine until it died in '77 or '78 and replaced it with a BOL Kenmore.

I remember the Out Of Balance buzzer being really loud.

PS: The guy in the photo is very cute too.

Am I cursed or Blessed?

So, I left this machine at an estate sale with Mark on Friday. Blane suggested we go get it for parts which he convinced me so on Sunday. Had it here, (you saw the pics) ready to bust apart and Mark sent me a text which read "What are the odds?" with a link to the MINT matching dryer on Craigslist, very reasonably priced.
I have been really proud of myself as I have been cleaning things out and greatly reducing in many areas of my life but I gave in so now I have an upcoming restoration. The good thing is I do have some nice parts, and was about to break down another Kenmore with a nice cabinet and such to use on this.

This set was across the street from me when I was growing up, the same people still live there, although the w&d are long gone. I remember her teaching Julie (their oldest daughter) how to wash clothes while I was there one time. I remember it so well because she showed her how to start the machine, told her to wait for the fill and when it started to agitate she could add the soap, and then the clothes. This was different than how my Mom and Grandmother's did it, as they loaded the clothes, put the soap in, closed the lid, set the controls and started the machine. The way Julie was taught probably made good sense to dissolve the soap before going into the pump, is that how Kenmore instructions suggested it?

Anyways, here is the 1962 set, complete with mint dryer and washer that needs some lovin!
