I had to make a small trip to Wal Mart earlier today to get a money order and something for lunch. This Wal Mart is fairly new (about a year old) and a mile or so from my apartment.

After I finished making my money order transaction, I found a wrapper on the floor near one of the registers for the new coconut M&M's (which, I'm assuming, somebody probably didn't pay for).

I threw said wrapper away and continued to the deli area to pick up my sandwich. While heading back to the registers, I noticed a school planner and a 12 pack roll of Scott paper towels abandoned by two of the empty check out lanes. I picked these items up, proceeded to the shortest line possible, and waited for the cashier to finish with her customer.

When it was my turn, I told the clerk right away that I had found the two items near the registers, and I did not want them. Dead silence on that, but she asked me if I wanted my sandwich, and I replied yes. I told her that I used to work for K Mart in El Paso, and that abandoning items in the front of the checkout aisle or through the store was one of my pet peeves. Again, dead silence. She told me what my total was, and I paid for my sandwich. I apologized for my menial complaint, in which she retorted, "Well, some of us need to complain about something." She said thank you for my purchase, and I said thank you as well. I was going to tell her, as I tell most people, "have a good day", but she could've dropped dead before I said anything along those lines.

At the front door, I told the greeter about the situation, and she summoned someone from the service desk. I told this "manager" what I did and told of the clerks rudeness, and added that the clerk should have at least been a bit more appreciative and said "thanks" or something along those lines. She looked at me with somewhat of an odd look on her face, and said if she knew who the clerk was, she would be more than happy to talk to her. I pointed the clerk out (who was coming back from the service desk, to probably abandon the items I gave to her). I don't know why, but I apologized to the "manager" for my trite and meaningless complaint, but said there were other things that their employees could be doing, instead of picking up after other shoppers.

Mind you, I was not looking for the clerk to come bounding from behind her register and start showering me with kisses, while repeatedly saying "thank you, thank you, thank you". I would've appreciated a small bit of acknowledgment that I had done a good deed. Lord knows how long those items had been or would had been sitting there before I picked them up. I also don't know if the clerk was having a bad day, or maybe was feeling ill, or possibly this was her normal every day presence, but her demeanor could have been a tad bit more pleasant.

I'm one of these people who will pick up an item if I see it abandoned, and, if I'm going in the direction of where the items originally belongs, will put them back on the shelf. I'm sure that most of you have seen frozen foods in (of all aisles) the detergent aisle, electronic items in sporting goods, plants in the automotive area, and on and on and on (there was one day when I found an OPEN box of Nicorette patches in the cereal aisle, with all the patches removed. The cost on something like that is about 25 bucks).

The people who leave their unwanted items around Wal Mart (and other stores as well), should shuffle their fat a**es back to the area where they got the item and replace it (believe me, some of these people look as though they could use the exercise), or do like I did and give it to the cashier.

My apologies if this sounds trite and meaningless, but I needed to vent. Thanks for reading it.

As long as the world is filled with people that believe, "I'm special, I'm chosen, and I'm the center of the universe" there will be problems.

Unfortunately, people-- like water and electricity-- take the path of least resistance eand many will do the least they can to "get over" (get by) in life.

It's a problem on the societal level, and one that is hard to fix. Let's see if this awful economy doesn't shake the nasty Ameican attitude of "you owe me" out of people.

I say bring back home economics as well as classes on manners, class, etiquette and how to interact with other human beings. We are long overdue.

If I see antother cashier busy talking to her coworkers and ignorng the customers while working the check-out line I'll scream! Honey, no one cares about your feelings on any particular issue or person. You are there to provide your undivided time and a serivce in exchange for a wage. How about getting to that duty.

..And if anyone can accomplish great classes it's our very own Launderess.

I say create a $300k+ per year postion for our very own Launderess to make littel model citizens such that Hyacinth Bucket (that's "Bouquet", dear) will look like Oscar Madison.

FEH!

Our local wal-mart is like that too, everyone who works there is so rude you cant believe it,
the one cashier, Esther is a real bitch, there are times I am in her line and she slams everything, dosent speak a word, has this sour face, and she wont tell you the total, just puts her hand out for the money or check. The one day she did this I was already hot because of an incident in the parking lot.
I spoker up when she damaged something bought by slamming it, I caused a little scene with like 8 people behind me, I do believe she was on the verge of crying when I was done speaking my mind she had changed her tune with me, but went back to being a miserable bitch to the next customer.

Then there was the time I had bought a new 7.5 ft christmas tree, I was parked 2 spots up from the buggy return and there were two employees gathering them up. They sam me struggling to get the box out of the buggy and just stared at me as I struggled, the box finally came out, but it hit the buggy and it went rolling down the hill with 12 boxes of red twinkle lights, 6 dozen eggs, and several bottles of anise and vanilla. They just stood and laughed about it as left my tree in the middle of the aisle and ran after my buggy swearing a blue streak.
After that incident, I refuse to go to Wal-Hell ever again.

No wonder why I prefer catalog shopping and online shopping

I sympathize with you for your awful shopping experience. Our values as a society as a whole have been shifting (for the worse) for years. I place the blame on bad parenting, too much goverment assistance, the internet, television, gaming, and cell phones. All of these have either lowered what's expected from us or insulated us from our neighbors that we really are losing the ability to interact with other people.

I avoid Wal-Mart specifically because I feel they're the leader in the destruction of small business over the years. Let's not forget the cheapening of goods to keep prices low.

You acted appropriately. All we can do to change society is to act a little bit better each and every day. Now, before a lightening bolt hits me, try and act better. We all are human and this problem isn't going away quickly.

xraytech ...

You're not talking about the North Versailles WM, are you? When I lived east of Pittsburgh, the North Versailles store was close and handy...and dreaded!

One evening, a cashier at that store spoke to me, actually engaged me in conversation as she tallied my purchases. I was so dumb-struck by her attention that she noticed my expression, and asked if there was anything wrong. I told her that I wasn't used to the store's cashiers being courteous and actually speaking to me.

It is not just WM, either.

It's sad.

I agree also

My company has used the Wal Mart (WMS) prescription plan for several years with generic medicines for zero dollars and a 30 to 50% on regular and at your choice of pharmacy. Now it will change to $10 copay per prescription at other pharmacies and only the $0.00 at WalMart. We have gone to the same pharmacy for the past 14 years here and now to sve almost $1,00.00 per year have to go stand at Wal Mart for hours where we had walk in walk out at our Pharmacy. Here is a copy of the letter from our benefits group. Granted we are only 20 miles from Wal Mart corporate but still controlled by them.

To: Group Medical Partipants
From: Group Benefits Department
Subject: Pharmacy Program Change

As all of you know we have a very good pharmacy program that not only saves us money on co pays but also provides an unlimited choice of providers.

We have been offered a new program through Wal-Mart pharmacies that will save us even more on the drugs we currently use. The program is called “Direct To Employer” which utilizes Wal-Marts buying power to offer us more savings. The program will work well for us as 50% of our drugs are already filled at Wal-Mart. Following are the major points of the program;

• The program makes use of the $4 and $10 drug program in place at Wal-Mart (this program now has over 300 drugs in it).
• We will receive larger discounts on brand and brand name drugs (which saves each of us money on the co pay).
• Maintenance drugs will be filled for 90 days vs 30days (less trips to the pharmacy).
• Wal-Mart has also started filling prescriptions when they are called in (less wait time in the store).

To allow us to use the new program there has to be incentive to move more of our business to Wal-Mart. We have negotiated this point and made the following decision.

Beginning September 8, 2009 there will be a $10 co pay on generic drugs filled at any pharmacy other than Wal-Mart. Any generic drug filled at Wal-Mart will have $0 co pay (the same as now). The co pay on name and name brand drugs will stay the same as now, 30% and 50% respectively, no matter where they are filled.

This will still allow freedom to choose where you purchase your drugs, but we encourage you to take advantage of this new program and enjoy even more savings and convenience.

I posted my situation months ago re: a computer, long story short, Lightning ran in on the phone line, the dell warranty did not cover lightning, i also had a service policy that covered lightning but the policy "was not in effect" because the Mfr warranty was still in effect. To top all that off the computer evidently had been in someone elses house and returned as it was registered to an owner in another state. In the end they sent the warranty service van, after i "smiled" at them in person and on the phone, this went on for 2 weeks. thank goodness i had a laptop. The manager at walmart suggested a "shop" where i could get the computer fixed "and just pay for it". I no longer buy anything from walmart. If it would of been a $30. dvd player i would of thrown it away and not bothered. So based on my experience, buy expensive electronics from them at your own peril. And yes they have some "cast members" that are rude as Hell, and i am speaking of Management.

We have 3 stores here

within 15 miles of each other. Two of them are relatively new, seem clean enough, and one of them is pleasant to go to. However, there is another one that is a dreaded hell hole that is filled with white trash, and the underbelly of all the other races. About two years ago a body was found behind it in a field.

I rarely go to Wal Mart and I certainly wouldn't buy anything there that I wanted to be of quality. I much prefer Target, and we also have a nice downtown area and I like supporting the small business there when I can.

I'm with you all on the Wal-Bitches, I've been checked out by my share of them in the past, usually my "look" is enough to let them know what I think about them.

Well look at what they hire at Wal-Mart!! I mean, let's talk about the lowest common denominator....current and future government assistance recipients!!

rudeness in general

People all over are really rude. Driving, shopping, emails, you name it. I have worked with the public many times over the years. You are your own brand no matter what you affilate yourself with and with that in mind, work on making your brand something that is quality. Most younger people just don't get it. If someone forces their bad day on me, I will mention it on occasion, but mostly feel their ignorance is really a waste of my time, I was on the subway recently here, and a big hot tranny mess started going off on me as I did not "give up my seat for a lady." I mean girls, she was up in my grill. I looked her right in the eye and said, "A lady does not share her thoughts with strangers," she never knew what hit her. The best line from the Comedy Central Joan Rivers Roast: "A Diva is what you call a c*nt when she's still in the room."

No Hope

People who work at Walmart know there isn't much in their future, I wouldn't go in there expecting first class service..

At the risk of sounding like a Pollyanna....the closest grocer to me happens to be a Super Walmart. I get so irritated at times in that place, that I have at times walked out. When I am in a better place I have found if I look at the person in the eyes and say something like" honey, what a day, huh!"..I am southern so I can do the "honey" deal. or if the clerk has just dealt with someone chatting on a cell instead of taking care of business, I say " I guess that call was IMPORTANT"...they usually laugh and I get decent service....I know how exasperating it can be to have a rude clerk.

When I lived east of Pittsburgh, the North Versailles

Versailles. Properly pronounced "ver-sigh," but over there I've more often heard it as "ver-sails."

Hey Bill,

When you said, "The people who leave their unwanted items around Wal Mart (and other stores as well), should shuffle their fat a**es back to the area where they got the item and replace it (believe me, some of these people look as though they could use the exercise)," I agree whole-heartedly. Having been there today, I was reminded of it. All three Wal-Mart stores near us have, um... how to politely say this.... government-cheese-fed-fat-assed-welfare-folk, as their main clientelle. They're routinely taking things out of their carts and putting them on random shelves, blocking aisles with their broods (I make that plural as it's evident there are different sperm donors for the children), speaking loudly to who-knows-who in who-knows-what language on their cell phones.....

Unfortunately Wally World does have the best prices on many of the everyday things we use, so I do go there somewhat regularly. Funny-- since they're not paying for it (we are), I wonder why so many of the obviously subsidized folk shop there? Doesn't anyone else sell stretch polyester pants?

I have no problem with Walmart. There are 4 (soon to be 5) Super Walmarts in the Augusta area and the people are pretty nice to me. One thing the employees are supposed to do is if you ask where something is they aren't supposed to point, they are supposed to escort you to the item. I find they do that about 50% of the time. I make sure they are thanked whenever they do it, too. I usually strike up a conversation with the cashier. I ask how long they've been working, or if its time for their break. Rhinnie used to turn off their light and tell them it was time for a break. (this wasn't just at Walmart, either.) Then he would tell the customers behind, winking, they had to find another cashier 'cause Mary had to have a break! He was such a clown!

My beef is with K Mart. Every time I go in one,I swear it will be the last time! Why have 12 checkouts if only one is open? I was at the service desk once and two employees came up looking for the manager. They were having a fight! Right there in the store in front of the customers! It was a sad day when they merged with Sears, IMHO. I wouldn't want to be in the K Mart family, even if by marriage!

I Hate Walmart .....

I hate Walmart for all the reasons posted and a few more. I will not shop there under any circumstances.

The big issues I have with them and the fact they force a lowered wages stream. If they can get away with paying their workers a low wage every other company near by will do the same. And once they drive out all the small town competition that may pay more, there is no reason to pay more then minimum wage.

The other serious issue I have is the fact that they have cheapened the goods for everyone in America and possibly the world with the buying practices. And by cheapen I do not mean in terms of price, I mean quality. They buy in such large quantities that they dictate the price point and so the manufacturer in order to meet he set price moves production to China or some such place and uses cheaper materials. There by rendering most products as crap. I blame them in large part for our disposable society.

I truly think of Walmart as a boil of the ass of our society and pray for the day it's lanced and oozes away like the puss it is.

just my 2 cents worth

my partner is the manager of the meat dept at walmart in Columbia SC i know for a fact he goes out of his way to be nice to customers and other employees
he truly is one in a million

Let's face it, it's a trade off....low prices, mediocre to lousy service in many cases. There are some good ones..I got one who sold me my hi def DVD player who couldn't have been nicer (or cuter), so they are out there. Rare, but there.

North Versailles Wal-Mart

YIKES!..what a horrible place...I grew up in NV (43 now) and remember when it was the Greater Pittsburgh Drive-In..and when the now gone Eastland Mall had Gimbels and Penneys..now every store around the said WalMart is a nail place, dollar store or a store that sells nothing but junk ...we are to blame for this..we want everything cheap and now, instead of saving money to buy quality...

Oh, I have to agree!

That Wal Mart has sticky floors and sidewalks too! I buy stuff there becuase it is cheap and if I need many different kinds of items and I go during off peak hours. While I have not been treated mean there (lucky), there are times when I have left items becuase the check out line is too long and maybe I don't need it That Badly (so yes, blame me dirtybuck for leaving items where they don't belong).

In fact, I have a theory about the recession: We consumers are on strike and have figured out that we really don't need to buy so much so badly if we are going to be treated so meanly. Treat us like we are human, and the economy may recover.

Meanwhile, I am going through management complaining about Advance Auto Parts who have treated me like a criminal in their store. Let you know what happens there.

Oh, and teaching home economics? Not in the new expensive high school our community is building. It will have only 2 small "Family and Consumer Education" classrooms. But it will have 4 larger gyms, multiple athletic rooms and offices, and we will get a new football field. I guess we are paying taxes for a football program and not for teaching young people aren't we.

Sometimes I think we are in a consumer war, and we just have to toughen up.

I'm so sorry

about you guys' experience with Wally-World. You can blame most of this on Wal-Mart and the training these employees receive.( And the rest on just bad breeding). My partner and I get into a heated argument about getting groceries at Wal-Mart, which I don't like, but we compromise. True, the prices are fairly descent, but you are treated like trash some times. First, I always speak first to the cashier, and even help with the bagging. Sometimes these cashiers will speak and will have a descent conversation with you, and then there are the others who won't address your presents, won't look at you, and most importantly, will not even say thank-you for your $125.00 groceries you just purchased. Sorry to say, the same thing happens in about Wal-Mart store everywhere as well. I think this would make a good news segment on the nightly news, especially using hidden cameras!

Never had a problem.

I've always had good service at the Wal-Mart stores in this area. (about 4 stores I sometimes frequent, depending on where I'm at) But, I must say I often use the "self checkout" registers. Still, the employees have always been friendly.

What About the Upper Midwest?

For the most part, "Midwestern values" still prevail in the Wal-Mart stores where I shop, but I do notice some erosion. Any rude employees tend to be transplants from the East and the South. Otherwise, I see a few more cranky, slow, and unsteady older folk casheering the checkouts, along with some more careless younger people, no matter if they are native to my area, or from elsewhere. Maybe the "Wakeup Wal-Mart" site might be of use.--Laundry Shark

Haven't set foot in Wal-Mart for 7 years and proud of it. We're fortunate that we've got Meijer up here in MI and they spank WM all over the place...where they are (IL/IN/KY/OH/MI) they are clearly the better choice...they started as a grocer so they have good food and later added variety stuff. Interesting...up here in metro Detroit you never have to apologize for shopping at Meijer...it's "everyone's" store in kind of an interesting way. They're opening one in the city of Detroit next year which should be interesting, to say the least.

In our area, it all went downhill when we lost Kroger.

One reason I end up at Wal Mart is that in our area we have lost some of our supermarkets and the ones remaining are kind of depressing. The supermarket part of that North Versailles Wal Mart we don't like to go to is actually nicer than some of our supermarkets.

Back in 1983 our community had a Kroger that we all liked. The people who worked at Kroger were union members. Kroger the company decided then that they did not want to deal with a union and when the union threated a strike, Kroger pulled out of the Pittsburgh area completely.

Kroger was always a step above Foodland, Giant Eagle, and Shop and Save with their nicer stores and fresher food. Our Kroger turned into a Foodland and was OK for awhile, then the owner started to have a gambling problem and the store really turned for the worse. That store closed 2 years ago and by that time, nobody missed it, it was so unpleasant.

Today Foodland is an abandoned eyesore and the Giant Eagle and Shop and Save are farther away and so we end up at WM. If not for Wal Mart, maybe we will end up growing our own food (that is, if I could get rid of all the poison ivy growing in our yard). This is just one example of retail really going down hill.

My problem Wal-Mart mentioned earlier is te Washington, Pa location.
I prefer to go to Shop N Save for groceries, but occasionally go to Kroger because I am right along the W. Virginia panhandle border, do the same to go to K-Mart.
I dont cross the border for groceries and clothes since they are tax free in Pa and there is a 6% tax on them in W. Virginia
