One of my friends has a Kitchen Aid 23 series Supurba which has developed a rust hole in the bottom of the tank. How should he go about fixing it? Plumber's epoxy?

What have you tried and found successful?
Dave

A hole rusted all the way thorugh the tank? That sounds most unusual.

The epoxy patch was recommended for a chip in the white coat of porcelain. If that is what this is 2 part epoxy patch would work. If it is a hole you can look through and see the tracks, more drastic patching is in order.

HOLD EVERYTHING!!!!

Don't do anything to the machine!
The 23 series had a 25 year tank rust trhu warranty. Call and get them to inspect it and then insist on not paying anything to get it fixed. They willa ctually replace the machine. That is how I got my tall tub machine.

Rust hole.

I've not seen it myself, but he said the hole was in the sump and it is an actual hole which is leaking water.

As for the warranty, what would he have to prove? He bought it used many years ago, so he isn't the original owner. Additionally, I'd like to get some parts off of it for one of my machines if it is condemned. If it's replaced under warranty, would I still be able to get my hands on a few things, or would Whirlpool require getting the whole machine back? I would hope they'd just give him some sort of voucher to use at a local retailer.

Thanks a bunch,
Dave

Here's the deal

I picked my machine up from the junk pile at a local appliance store and wanted it because it was a completely white on white Imperial model, that is, White panels, and control panel and white edge trim on the door panels. I always likeD that look. When I plugged it in and threw water into the tank, the machine shorted out because there was a small hole that leaked on to the heating element and tripped the breaker,I was thinking of fixing it but then saw the warranty details in the owners manual and gave it a shot.
They asked for model and serial number and sent a tech out to check it. He was really happy because the unit was in my garage and he didn't have to pull it out from the cabinet, He said that the tank was NLA and that WP found it less expensive to just replace the whole unit. He put it in for replacement and then I had to contact WP to get the deal moving. The wanted $150.00 to swap the machine out but I persisted that I should not have to be held responsible for them supporting the warranty on their product. They asked for $75 instead and I still insisted that I would not pay it. So the rep relented and told me she would send it for free but that their local guy would have to install it.

Since she told me who the rep was, and I pass their place of business nearly once or twice a week, I stopped in when the machine was shipped and arranged for them to let me just take it home and install it myself. He agreed to it but I had to leave the old machine out for them to pick up when they were in my area. No Problem!!!

I asked if I could have anything off of it and he said I could take anything I wanted but had to make sure the tank was there with the serial tag on it.
Well that was a done deal and I had a brand new KUDP02IRWH2 within about 2 weeks. I finally installed it 4 years later and have had it as a daily driver for 2 years now.

The wife still wants our KDS18 put back but I enjoy the silence and it actually does a good job of cleaning the dishes but it doesnt hold as much and takes really long to complete any given cycle.

I did swap the Hydrosweep arm with a Whirlpool wash arm because I think it cleans better especially in the corners of the rack and gets the silverware much better than the Hydrosweep arm. The WP arm is longer and has its end nozzles pointed better to get the silverware on the side of the rack and the extended front portion of the KA rack.
