I got the bad news today that my beloved dog Max has an agressive form of cancer. He's been my best buddy for the past 9 years. He's been with me during my saddest moments. This came on sudden. I took him to the vet on Saturday for a kennel cough shot and the Dr. found a golfball sized mass in his mouth near the throat. I had no idea he had it. Today he's having it removed and I'll bring him home. The next step will be spending time with him before the end. I'm very upset as you can imagine. Keep him and me in your prayers as we go through this difficult time.

Thanks
joe

I am so sorry

to hear this sad news. You hear so much about cancer in animals that I have started having my dog's blood tested every six months and try to do all the things they tell you to promote good health -- and hope for the best.

I am so sorry to hear of this news. My best wishes to your Buddy.

Have you consulted with a canine oncologist? Our Golden came down with a cancerous (stage 3)tumor last October. They removed it an started chemo with her. The chemo was pretty easy on her. You didn't even know she was on it. Today she is off chemo and still cancer free.

Cancer is much more virulent in dogs than in humans. But early detection can have better results these days than in the past.

Don't beat yourself up about this, tumors in dogs can spring up overnight. They can go from being a little dot to golf ball sized overnight.

I am so sorry to hear about Max's Terminal illness. I know all too well the emotional roller coaster you're on now. My own experiences tell me that when this happens, just to give them the same unconditional love they , themselves have given out.Dogs, cats and horses all have that ability to comprehend OUR emotions and love we give them. They, however, do not react to their own final destination as noticeably as we do ours. When my cat, Kenmore died,I was devistated but,was given another cat about three weeks later who needed someone who could bottle feed him until he was old enough to eat solid food. His mother had cancer and could not nurse him.He became one of my favorite cats of all time. His name was Desi and was a Blue Russian cat.He enjoyed playing with fake mice and jumping up on top of my fridge to surprise me by jumping on to my shoulder, unanounced, and nibbled on my ear lobe purring so loud it almost broke my ear drum. You have my deapest sympathy and condolances.

The Great Dilema

Is it better to just go to sleep and never wake up or have time to say good bye? My experience in the human realm of loosing loved ones slowly has allowed some of the most tender and cherished moments I'll always remember. There are medications and procedures to ease the discomfort but for those who watch and wait there is no balm to soothe the anguish. I will keep you both in my prayers.

I am sorry to hear of this. Just before Xmas I had to have my cat (only 9 years old) put to sleep because the vet found a large tumour in her throat which prevented her from eating. She was losing weight very quickly and it just was not fair to her as I knew she was starving to death.

Joe -
What a pretty dog! I can see why you and he are 'buddies'. I'm sorry to learn that your time together is limited. Make the most of it and focus on fun and love. Charlotte and Bethann and I will keep the two of you in our thoughts and prayers.

Joe, I'm so sorry to hear of Max's cancer---and to have it come out of left field like that. Who couldn't love that face? He's adorable. And what a lucky little guy to have such a loving human in his life.[this post was last edited: 6/8/2010-18:47]

Joe

I hate to see pets suffer this way...they bring so much joy and unconditional love, to see one go thru this and live a short life, my words to you guys cannot express the sorrow I feel for you.....what an adorable face, he is pure love!

I lost my siberian last December, in 10 short days watched her painfully suffer, from high spirits to a listless animal, it just rips you apart to watch them go thru this, I am sorry to hear your best bud is going thru this....

take care and god bless

Joe,

My thoughts and prayers go out to you and your beloved Max. You are going through a lot right now, but realize that we are here for you.
John
