Yes, I'd be glad to do that. I want you to know how I feel about this overall. The shipping isn't going to be petty-cash cheap, even if we find a good deal. Since you'll be spending good money, I am not comfortable simply getting the machine out of the trailer, giving it a cursory looksee, then sending it to you. I want to safeguard that you'll have the best chances to get years of enjoyment out of it. If the machine needs a belt or a pump, etc. it will have them before it leaves.

This means that I want to examine the various mechanicals, the centerpost seals, test for leaks, for dead spots in the timer, etc. I will need a decent weekend day that is warm enough for me to spend a few hours in my garage. It's been a little nippy to be working out there and I've got a machine promised to a friend & co-worker that I have to finish first. I am still putzing around with my '85 Lady K also.

So, what I'm saying is it's going to be a little while before I can do that. Hopefully you can wait a few weeks?

Update about the shipper

I got the machines yesterday (thanks Matt, that's a neat Whirlpool, by the way). Jim the shipper is a very nice guy and seems really interested in helping us here. BUT, his attention to detail wasn't great. I was in a hurry when I went home from work during the day to get the delivery so I didn't examine stuff super closely. I thought the machines were dirty and dusty from sitting around, but as it turns out upon closer inspection last night, they're actually covered in salt spray.

As it turns out he hadn't covered or tarped the machines and they traveled here exposed to winter weather. One of the machines was loaded with the lid partially up, facing into the wind, which made the lid fly back and bend the hinges, etc. There was an outboard motor in the bed of his truck with the machines, and the pallet it was strapped to rubbed the Whirlpool all the way here, all the way down to polished steel.

Some padding and load preparation would have prevented all of that. I should be able to fix the lid and the rub mark, but cleaning that salf off EVERYWHERE is going to be a pain!

So, overall, Jim's a nice guy and he'll probably do anybody a good haul, but just be sure you make clear how you expect your item to be handled and check it thoroughly upon arrival. I'm pretty sure I asked for stuff to be tarped. So I'll have to check that out.

Sounds like Jim needs to discover shrink wrap, and learn to turn the machines so their backs are towards the wind.

I totally agree Steve. I don't know how much time this is going to take to clean the crevices (the salt kinda freaks me out as I think it got into the controls on a 1965 Kenmore 800) but I've asked Jim for some $$ help on that.

We'll see what he says.

Good to know Gordon, we'll talk more later. I think the guy is a bit slow and needs SPECIFIC instructions. He is new to this type of thing and didn't really understand why someone wanted "old" appliances shipped 1000 miles. But he needs to take responsibility since he said they would be enclosed. I should have been sharper too. I see now how his dually tires kicked up salt and shit, bounced it off the trailer and covered ther machines in back. Hope it's not too bad Gordon. Matt

I used Craters and Freighters recently and although expensive, they were so careful to wrap and protect the machine perfectly. They used shrink wrap, styrofoam blocks, a wooden base, and heavy cardboard outer box. It took forever to unwrap! I would highly recommend C&F's for a mint machine.

I found this shipper, and some other good ones, at UShip.com.

It's an ebay company and runs a lot like ebay. You post a shipment, and shippers bid on it, but instead of bidding prices up as in ebay, they generally bid shipping prices DOWN. If you're patient, a great shipper can be found whose abilities match up perfectly with our needs. The best part is nobody is obligated to take anyone's quote, so as I see it, nothing ventured nothing gained.

Thing About C&F

Is one basically gets what one pays for.

For their rather high rates,they apparently do the job right. Add to this they are probably one of the only shippers left that will do major appliances.

UPS and UPS Freight can do small or mid-sized appliances, and if the item is crated and packed correctly it should arrive ok, but one still must do the packing oneself. Quite honestly having been through some horrible experiences with eBay sellers and their versions of "packing", if one truly wishes for something to arrive intact, then a C&F type outfit is the way to go.

Uship...

I had good luck using Uship. I shipped a 300 lb monitor top compressor from St. Louis to rural PA for $115.00 a few weeks ago.

I crated the unit myself. My honest opinion is that you have to pack the item yourself or beg the seller to do so. The haulers just don't know what to do or care. Except with Craters and Freighters were they do care, but get your wallet in the process.

they do as Bobby said. Every square inch gets covered and wrapped then foam blocks, etc. The works!!! When I purchased our Twin Tub a few years ago they placed it on a custom pallet. I was going to toss it when the machine arrived but decided to keep it to use as the platform to reduce bending and lifting out items being washed/dried. UShip sounds promising. Agree with Launderess, lots of folks don't care once they have you on the hook for payment for said item

Just so everyone understands with UShip - you don't have to pay other than a booking deposit, which is refundable, until the shipment is complete. I have paid by credit card, by Paypal, and by cash. Most of those terms can be worked out during the bid process.

I think that as a group, we are big enough to get a shipper willing to do the job right. We offer a steady stream of business. Enough for someone to take the time to learn how to ship appliances properly. On the other hand, I agree with Travis that if you pack it yourself, there won't be a problem. If I had been on the ball, your machines would have arrived without salt all over them Gordan. I should have made him tarp them, but the forecast was clear, so he didn't. And I had pallets and boxes, but they wouldn't fit on the truck. Live and Learn, Matt
