Speed Queen purchase

I’m looking for wisdom on whether to buy a new or used Speed Queen w/d set. Right now I have an 11 year old set of Whirlpool that the original owner left with our house. I have never liked it for multiple reasons such as safety locks (they drive me crazy). I’ve heard about Speed Queen for years, but from what I have been reading on AW, I’m not sure which one or how old/new I should buy to get a good set. Any suggestions?

All speed queen machines are good in my opinion. My personal preference for new is the TC5 washer and used ones built before 2018.

I am currently refreshing a LWN432SP115TW01, serial number 1809045197 top loader, it is a 2018 model year top loader.

May I ask why you prefer machines built before 2018 please?

I would buy a new Speed Queen Classic Clean matching pair. You won't regret it. It will be the best decision you ever made. They will clean anything. Always stick with the heavy duty cycle as your normal cycle. When you use fabric softener, it will be completely mixed through during the deep rinse. And yes, they do get the dirt out without beating the fibers out of your clothes.

Speed Queen

Thank you all for the information. I’m still a bit concerned with the electronic panel on the new machines. I was really hoping to get a set that is all mechanical, but at least it will be reliable, and NO lid lock. Just out of curiosity, when I read the reviews, some people were saying the new machines were very loud. Is this true?

Definitely get a new Speed Queen set

But I would definitely get the front load washer, it’s extremely quiet. Does everything you would ever need a washer to do.

Nearly a dozen people on this site have bought front load pairs in the last few years and I haven’t heard any complaints.

Absolutely Buy Speed Queen

I bought an AWN412 in late 2013- I've never been happier.  

 

I recommend the TC5 series being sold today. Worth every penny.

I got a new TC5003 one month ago. It has worked very well.

It is a little louder than my 35 year old Maytag was, but not by much. Not even sure why that matters, I never do laundry while I'm sleeping.

I have found the "bulky/sheets" setting to be my preferred cycle. Uses a little more water than Heavy Duty, and a gentler agitation. No need for "Deep Fill" that way. My clothes are not heavily soiled, I worked in an office, not as a mechanic. Clothes come out very clean and fresh. No fabric softener, I use dryer sheets.

Here is the info SQ sent me, seems accurate as far as I can tell:

Eco cycle = 12.5 gallons per fill or 14.5 gallons with deep fill.
Permanent Press/Heavy Duty = 14.5 gallons per fill or 19 gallons with deepfill.
Delicates/Bulky = 16 gallons per fill or 19 gallons with deep fill.

Worth every penny

I don't doubt that it is, I was considering buying a new TC5 to replace my aging Maytag until I found out how much the sole SQ dealer here in Hawaii wanted for it, $1800 fob HNL, with a delivery time of a month.

So I got off my duff and disassembled a used SQ I bought for $75 last year used to sanitize it (LWN432SP115TW01), it is a 2018 model year washer, mechanically it is the same as a TC5, but features a reliable mechanical timer instead of an electronic unit.[this post was last edited: 6/18/2024-11:41]

I’m pretty sure the model you have was only sold commercially not for residential customers. In 2018 speed queen complied with DOE regulations and introduced the TR3,TR5,and TR7. The transmission machines were not offered residentially in 2018. The sales tanked so bad because people did not like them that they came out with the TC5 in 2019 which is an electronically controlled machine but has the old drive system with the transmission.

My SQ's product code is TV2000WN, Alliance refers to it as "Homestyle Automatic Washer".
It's serial number is 1809045197, indicating that it was manufactured in September 2018.
I've no idea how the previous owner came to own it, but what would the difference be between a commercial and residential washer be?
I can assure you that it has a mechanical timer and a transmission, as the attached images attest to.
If I'm not mistaken didn't all TC5's feature a electronic timer as opposed to a mechanical unit?

Edit: I just discovered that the primary difference between commercial and residential washer is the warranty length, commercial units came with just a 3 year warranty, certainly a concern when purchasing new, however moot in my situation.[this post was last edited: 6/18/2024-16:06]

The difference is the DOE does not allow this machine that you have to be sold for residential use per their rules/laws that were put in place to begin in 2018 but it is ok to use in a commercial setting. The machine is identical to a TC5 except for the controls. The TC5 has been and I’m sure always will be electronically controlled.

The other difference in warranty between the TC5 and commercial models, is that the commercial models have a parts only warranty. No labor.

however, once I re-assemble the washer it will be used in a residential environment, mine to be exact...

Commercial/on-premise toploader models typically don't have a water level/load size control vs. their residential-market siblings.
