Spin Agitate issues

Hi Everyone

I am trying to resurrect my whirlpool 1895 model 2 speed 6 cycle washing machine. It is 1 of about 3 whirlpool washing machines i inherited from my uncle who used to repair them. The other two have issues as well, one has a leak and the other is older than both these machines and is in unknown condition.

the issues it has seem to be two.
1. it wont spin properly, i suspect due to the clutch needing adjustment, however the other thing i have noticed is when it is agitating the bowl seems to be locked to the agitator and moves exactly with the agitator.

Looking at the wigwag coils it appears it is engaging the agitation cycle properly and it appears to be disengaging the spin cycle would this indicate that the shaft is bound up?

I guess the other question i have is can the clutch still be purchased for these machines? if so where.

If this is beyond repair then i will try to approach one of the other machines. possible try to seal up the one that leaks however this one is the one with a magic lint filter so i tend to like the idea of fixing this one first.

I have taken a video of what it does.

Excuse how dirty it is and the lack of lid. it has broken hinges and i intend to replace them when i get it working.

The clutch looks like it needs to be adjusted, not sure what’s causing the other issue with the agitator shaft being locked up. More than likely locked up to the spin tube, only way I can think about fixing that is to remove the transmission and remove the spin tube off of the agitator shaft if it’s possible and put some grease in the spin tube and put a little on the spin tube itself to be sure it won’t lock up or do anything peculiar.

It appears the spin tube is stuck to the agitate shaft.

Might this also explain the weak spin? - if the spin tube is stuck, maybe it is stuck sitting high, so the clutch doesn't bite properly?? (It is a l-o-n-g time since I worked on a belt-drive Whirlpool, I vaguely recall the clutch requires the weight of the spin tube and basket to be sitting on the engaged clutch for it to spin?? - I might be mistaken, it's been a while.)

I'd be trying to break free the spin tube from the agitator - maybe trying to force the basket to turn against the working agitator?

So i have now adjusted the nut on the clutch plate so it is at the maximum point before the nut falls off and it still spins slow. i suspect the clutch is warn out. where do you get clutches for these units?

I have also tried to force it in the operation however in doing so it only hurts my arm and stops the whole thing from moving including the agitator.[this post was last edited: 6/8/2022-02:27]

I’d ask John Lefever/combo52 since he’s been working on Whirlpool and Kenmore belt drive washers for many years and may have encountered the issues you are having at one point in time in the years he’s been repairing appliances.

That doesn't look like just a clutch issue, it does appear as Chris said that agitator shaft is frozen inside the spin shaft. The wash basket seems to rotate back and forth with the agitator which isn't suppose to happen. The entire transmission is going to need to be pulled out of the machine and the spin tube assembly will need to be removed and lubricated on the inside at minimum.

I am waiting on a tub nut wrench to arrive being shipped from US before starting on this. I have however found by chance a part supplier that still had old stock. I have ordered a new solenoid for the valve, a new tub seal ( this is in case i cant fix this one i can use the tub seal to fix the leak in the other machine i have) i have ordered 2 break linings (just in case) and a gasket for the transmission as it is seeping a little oil and i will have it out anyway so why not fix it while i am there. I also ordered a new pump (this can be used in either machines, and two new hinges for the lid.

I will have to decide what machine i plan to save when I pull the spin tube and agitate tube out. if i cant separate them then i will probably be in a situation where i have to either write this one off or transfer the entire transmission / spin tube and agitator shaft from one of the other machines. I plan to order a belt too while i have it apart.
