Tonight while washing a full load of towels my SQ542 began to make a loud intermittent noise which I can best describe as the sound of gears stripping. I took the front panel off the machine, and the sound was definitely coming from under the tub. The noise stopped completely after the wash cycle, and subsequent wash loads. My concern is that my basement where the machine is kept is constanly freezing, could the room temp affect the tranmission fluid, thus causing the noise I heard? Any thoughts? The machine almost four years old.

mtn1584  get you a shop light with a 60 ro 75 watt bulb in it and place it inside the washer drum with the lib down that should generate enought heat to keep the machine warm and nothing to freeze.

Hmmm...

I suppose you could fill the machine with hot water and let it sit for 10 minutes then pump it out and begin your wash day...

It's the belt!

Took the front panel off again, used a flashlight this time, the belt is def. starting to wear, and it was the drive pulley making the noise during agitation with heavy loads. Checked with SQ they said replace the belt. I have a SQ repairman coming out on Mon. I really think I could change the bale myself, but I need to see someone do it first. And no I sdon't baby my machine, but I think I will from now on!!! LOL

Jeff's Appliance Service......................

got me back in business, I needed a new belt, and he replaced the tension pulley as well. After watching the tech change the belt and pulley, I know in the future, I could do it myself. I love my washer.
