Stain Removal Tests: UK Ariel (P&G) and Persil (Unilever)

I love Eugene's stain tests!

Eugene, I just sent you an e-mail, so disregard the part about whether or not you'd had the chance to run your stain test. Great job as usual! So how much better did #3 Tide with Bleach do than #4 Persil and #5 Ariel? Were the differences negligible?

My machine has a heater and I think it does a profile wash on the Sanitary program, so it will be interesting to see if the extra bit of remaining coffee and mustard will shift during a longer wash time in hotter water. I'll see if I can give it a try this week with the Unilever Persil.

Problem with the methodology

While this is a great test and well done for coming up with it you are using the European products and Tide HE in a machine they're not designed to be used with at all.

The European products are supposed to be used in *much* higher concentrations in a front-loader. I would suspect they'd perform drastically better in their native environments.

I'm amazed that they managed to perform so well used in such a dilute solution in a toploader.

S8A and Tide with Bleach etc are designed for this kind of set up.

I'd like to see the test results with the same stains and fabric tried with each powder / liquid used in their appropriate machines.

E.g. wash that at 40C in a front loader (on short wash) with Ariel, Persil (DE) and Persil (UK/IRL) and Tide HE (US)

Vs. washing in a toploader with SA8 and Tide With Bleach.

David, whilst I have never had bedlinen as heavily soiled as you describe, a member of my family has trouble with bowel control and produces similar, stains I would say when it comes to underwear. I have to say that we've used Persil and Ariel for the past few years and both products haven't left stains or odours at all... have never had a problem with Persil leaving stains or odours behind myself.

I agree with the sales figures though, sorry Rob, but even though this is from a checkout boy's perspective I scan probably 3 packs of Ariel (whether it's powder, tablets, liquitabs) to 1 pack of Persil. Ariel is always being replenished more too from what I've noticed and always runs down faster so Persil doesn't outsell Ariel at all at least round here.

What I can say is that, I use a colour detergent for everything that's not white, and repeatedly Ariel has always outperformed Persil Colour. Ariel Colour always gets grass stains out of jeans (even the liquitabs), whereas a dose of Persil Colour powder doesn't touch grass stains at all. So I feel Persil lags behind when it comes to colour care products, and is nowhere near Ariel unlike the traditional biological formulations.

It's a non-heating front loader though, do you know what temp it washed at ?
Also, how long was the wash and how much water does it use ?

just because your workplace sells more of a certain product does not mean it affects overall national sales figures. It certainly does vary region to region but the fact remains in figures NATIONALLY and when the report came out this March Persil outsole Ariel. I cant lie about published figures from a countrywide perspective. We sell more Persil as a store but then Tesco also gets plenty in with special promotions, which may affect it, but I notice whenever Mum uses Ariel its always from Sainsburys so no doubt you have it on offer occasionally. Like I say those sales figures are right.

Mrx his tests are consistant. It makes no odds what machine he uses as long as every test is in the same machine, same temp, same load size/ with same items and same everything of which Eugene has done consistantly. The products are all Marketed to get the same results as the next brand whether HE OR NOT. Eugene thanks for the results, I know you made it fair, for you have nothing to hide or lose when performing such tests. Rob

Also as long as Eugene used the appropriate dose of Automatic detergent in a TL OR appropriate dose of TL detergent for a FL water intake it will make no odds really. (unless it totally foamed up to the point of hindering cleaning action) but he has not used our automatic detergent in a TL so at least to compare how UK Products perform to US products for HE Machines is showing a true comparison.

The sales figures applied to every outlet of these detergents and NOT sales from any 1 particular supermarket. They are THE sales figures for total sales in the UK. As published in the newspapers when end of year reports came out. May have been April not March, around that time anyway.

i'm gonna back rob up on this one, from a sales perspective i know that certain detergents sell better in different areas but the overall sales figures for the nation count when it comes to saying which one sells best. I know from the Persil Non Bio that rob sent me (ta again rob) that it got my whites really really white even in warm water. My mum used nothing but ariel in england, the drawer tab one and they got our clothes clean at 40* fine so i can't bat for either team. I just know that we sell a lot more Omo than any other at our store, which i have noticed in figures sells more cold power than omo. I'm not sure what the national number is but the number sold in a specific area does not say denote wether either detergent is the most popular.

In Germany it's said, that PERSIL (from Henkel) is slightly less effective than ARIEL but not much and not really detectable during normal household usage. The only thing why I do not use PERSIL, which is Germany's favourite powder for over 100 years, is because of it's foaming which isn't a problem in the front-loader nor in the TLs but in my Twin-Tubs' spinners!
And we do not get any other PERSIL here than the one from Henkel, so I do not know about the UK Unilever one.
With color-powders we are told by the consumer test, called TEST of Stiftung Warentest, that ARIEL COLOR is the best by far of all!
TIDE, which we bought in the States, we can't use because we get skin irritaion from it, which we both never had in our live from any kind of powder before.

mrx--- I checked the temp about 2 minutes into the 18-minute wash cycle and it registered 140-degrees F. I believe there are roughly 5 gallons of water in the tub.

I make NO claims whatsoever that these tests are scientifically rigorous. I do my best to test each detergent in the same cycle with the same-sized load at the same water temperature. To be honest, I do the tests to see which brands perform the best in my washer with my water conditions. I share the results for fun, not to dictate to anyone which detergent to use.

I used powdered Tide Cold Water for 7 months and had fantastic results on highly-stained loads when coupled with liquid chlorine bleach. On its own, it doesn't fare well. I still use it for certain loads, but now I know what it can and can't do on its own.

..I´m going to do a simillar stainremoval-test as such here.

A friend of mine will also soil some white sheets and will wash them in his new Miele commercial washer.

We´ll test two detergents with 22 different stains in 4 different wash-cycles.

I´ll test Ariel and Mr.Propper Prof. (commercial) in my AEG

And he´ll test Ariel Expert (commercial) and Persil in his Miele.

After our tests we´ll compare our results

The company that makes SA8 is still known as Amway in the UK; here is their website. Unfortunately, unlike Quixtar (which is US version of the company) it doesn't appear you can order online. You'd have to find one of their direct sales people.
