Surging For Solid State

Remember this ad? There was one of these washers, in platinum gray, in a store window for many years in a store near my former Launderall dealer. I wanted that washer in the worst way, the color, the solid state controls and of course, the grand style of the Whirlpool slanted controls. I responded to an ad for a serger and found out that it was at the same store as I'd seen the washer in for eight years. I stopped in a couple of times a year and asked about the washer but was always told it didn't work/wasn't for sale/or even sold awaiting delivery. I asked about it again the other day and was told it was gone, junked with other old appliances. Out of sheer curiosity, I went to the 45 year old store and was delighted to find the washer, moved to the back room. It was finally mine!!

This is it - in Platinum!! Just as I found it, home from it's captors after eight long years...

I was told it "didn't work" or needed parts a few times but after a couple of tries, everything seemed to work just as it was supposed to do. I started cleaning it up and discovered it was used very lightly and remarkably clean under the layer of dust...

Since we have the Double-Duty Super Surgilator out of the washer, let's see how it differs from a standard Super Surgilator...

This winged-beauty is a very efficient agitator, one of the best in a large capacity washer.

Get this - as I cleaned deeper into the machine, I discovered that it had never been used! Outside of the surface dust and some minor dings and bumps from being in a crowded store for many years, the machine is NEW!

I got it cleaned and put back together so we're washing 1980's style now!

Congrats on your find!! That is a really nice machine, and the controls are quite intuitive & flexible. This was Whirlpool's 2nd edition of electronic controls, with many improvements on the 1st generation control layout. Have fun with it!!

Okay, one quick question. Does this have a microprocessor board that controls the motor functions via relays, or is it like the later KitchenAid with a rapid advance timer?

Wonderful color, but a bizarre agitator. Never saw one work but can't believe those fins don't get in the way of the clothes moving.

Here are the controls for the washer. The circuit boards are on the left and moving beyond is the transformer, two motor relays (hi and lo speed), the power on-off switch and finally the water level control.
