The first wash in the 1959 Kelvinator - on film!

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Fantastic video! It is so strange to see an agitator that isn't oscillating (or as in the case of Frigidaire, pulsating). The splashy drama is amazing. I don't know how those washers didn't totally rust out with that water flying around everywhere. Such a unique wash action. A great restoration, too.

I am new here and only discovered this website about 3 weeks ago... I just LOVE IT!!!

Ben, congratulations on the restoration and THANKS for putting video and all the pix up, they are GREAT!!!

I've never seen a Kelvinator in action and did not know the agitator just shook around like that….. it's just awsome to see!

Thanks much for sharing!!!

kevin, it kinda reminds me of a KitchenAid mixer running, if it was mixing from the bottom. Look in the pics of the AW members facess thread and you'll see me gettting splashed by a kelvinator at the 2005 conventionn in Omaha.

Adgitator question

The reason why I asked that was that, I believe, Kelvinator bought out ABC when they went out of business in or around 1957 or 1958. I have a 1955 ABC wringer washer that says ABC Co. Altorefer bros. company, Peoria, Illinois. I have another ABC wringer, a later model but looks nearly the same as the '55 and it says; ABC on the name plate but says Kelvinator- American motors on the back. I was just wondering if the ABC adgitator would fit in the Kelvinator because the washing action in the Kelvinator was the same as the ABC. Have fun, Gary

Wonderful Restoration

Ben,

That is a wonderful restoration. They are a great machine to see in action.

Would so dearly love to be able to find a Kelvy like this here in Oz, but i think the chances are pretty remote now.

What an awesome machine Ben!! You'd better put a raincoat on when you lift that lid! LOL

Congrats on getting a beautiful and unique washer in such fine working order!! How about an Iowa wash-in (in the summer, of course)! ;-)

Thanks for the great comments!

I know there was a question about the ABC vs. Kelvinator agitator. They are identical - except the early ABC/Kelvinator agitators had rubber fins on them, instead of the later moulded plastic agitator. For more photos, check out Robert's 1949 ABC in the Museum.

Venus - I think a wash-in would be so much fun! Hopefully everything will be on schedule with the house, and a wash-in can be tentatively planned for the end of Sept (maybe after the VCCC convention?) It is beautiful in Iowa during that time of the year, right before harvest, great colors, and muggy temps!

Warsh In

Hi Ben, Is the warsh in set in stone yet? I would love to come but am planning a trip to England in early Sept. Early October is good too in Iowa. I know that it isn't all about me but I think it would be fun and Illinois is close too. Love your new machine and the film. Keep us posted on the house project too. Bye for now. Gary
