Today I decided to give the Speed Queen a go after using the Whirlpool that I recently repaired all the time, which is right in front of the Queen.

 

The Queen must have felt betrayed for all the care and attentions given to the Whirlpool.

So after like 3 minutes  the hot whites cycle  began water appears coming from underneath and gets<span style="font-size: 12pt;"> larger and larger over seconds, so I put rags and towels on the floor and open the front to check as fast as i could</span>

Tub leak, right on the bearing thingy side.

Tub seal of course I say. But this much all of a sudden I say to myself, that is weird!!

Put it on spin mode, more water comes out.

Next 

<span style="font-size: 12pt;">  I unload the soapy clothes and flush water to rinse the tub from soap.</span>

<span style="font-size: 12pt;">I check again.</span>

Leak looks like it has stopped.

I decide to fill the tub all the way and no leak appears.

That is crazy! I say "Her majesty which kind of tricks is your winsconsin  royalness into?"

I then decide for an hot fill and again nothing, not a drop.

I run the load again and procede without a drop from beginning to end.

Her majesty you is a jealous b***h!

Now, jokes aside.

My assumption is that, somehow, by keeping it running and the seal seal wet some kind of vacuum creates inside the lip, but as it dries out not being used regularly and before a spin that pushes water into then leaks, and leakes plenty.

Now talking of fixing. Have watched a tutorial some time ago and looks a quite easy job but have questions:

1 ) What can I use instead of the special tool? Would a wrench work too?

2) Is that specific kind of sealant so specific as they say? Cuz I have some polimeric grey silicon that looks just like it.

3)Air bubbles trapped inside are really a common thing or it is just being OCD?

Hi John. It is actually a Raytheon (Amana) Speed queen. From mid 90s.
The one I put lights on.
Black porcelain wash tub, Amana straight vane agitator.
Leak was coming from the side of the bearing triangular piece underneath and dripping over the transmission. And plenty.
As you can read the funny thing is that it completely stopped after it spun and completed a few loads afterwards without leaking a drop.

Main Seal Leak In 1990s Style Raython SQ

Those carbon faced seals can stick and cause problems some times especially if they sit a lot.

 

That was the major upgrade Alliance did on the TL SQ washers 15years ago or so, they went to a better lip seal with a SS sleeve and raised the entire assembly higher from the tub bottom so build-up [ minerals gunk etc ] will not affect the seal easily.

 

The MT Amana-Tags had a lip seal running against aluminum and it was too low which is why they had so much trouble with seals and main bearings.

Oh.
So what I will find will be a different seal set up than what's in the SQ in the video tutorial? Different part # too?
I do not understand what is the aluminum thing it sits on. Hope it is not corroded.
As said I do believe it might be something like that, as it dries out whatever build up is in there will not seal anymore and as it gets wet again will act like a seal hence why after spinning it didn't leak.

But of course it needs to be addressed.
I think I will get a better understanding once I take it apart

Keep us posted on what you find out with that seal and if you can change it out to the SQ SS sleeve that John mentioned.

I may be doing this job on my MayTag SAV, Amana-Tag pretty soon because it has leaked and froze up the bearing. Everyone says to junk it and I might do that too but will probably tear it down to have a good look at that seal area first.

They look enough easy to work on too.
I don't want to order that special wrench tool though, so I hope to find something else instead that works.

I'll also have to take a look at my Whirlpool direct drive as it needs a new coupler and neutral drain kit so have some work to do
