The Water Level Reset Button

Does it have to be "reset" before you change the size of your load? My wife went from "biggest" to "smallest" without first turning the knob that short turn to the left, after I'd washed my jacket and coat, and claims that the water in the machine didn't rise that high when she used it to wash a pair of our daughter's shoes...

Is resetting your washer's Water Level necessary? What really happens if you don't reset?

Yeah,

we miss having that feature. We get either three inches, six to eight, or a full tub. the lowest on normal, then the middle on hand wash, and full on bulky.
Half the time the tub now even fills a third to a half on normal, even with a small load.

Reset

The only time you should have to reset the switch is if it had already reached a satisfied point and started agitation. If the machine is still filling, there is no reason to reset it as it is still open.

Well, that's what I ocasionally do when I'm not sure how much water I need, and have to see that my machine fills up to the desired level, so that's what led me to believe is its function...

In other words, I reset the "Reset" along the way... I was just wondering if you're supposed to when changing your load sizes before you turn the water on... Otherwise not to worry, and maybe I'll just move the lever where I want it before starting if the water will go as high/low as it's supposed to, though I watch and reset it anyway, to keep the proper amount according to my load sizes...

"Reset" is only there to help add more water AFTER agitation has started, and you wish to use a higher water level.....and then you can re-select the level you prefer....

one agitation has started, no real need to lower it.....

sometimes you will wash a load on medium level, but wish for a higher rinse level, after agitation starts, the selector can be moved to the higher level for that portion of the cycle.....

note these types of adjustments are only for water level selectors that are variable.....

if you have a 3/4/5 position switch, as you select the next level, the 'reset' is built in between the settings....

reset has aslo been used to add more water to a high level.....

sounds like your wife is like my mom.  If she changed the water level, which was rare, or after I'd used the machine with appropriate water level, she'd turn (or slide with the 1964 Norge) from ex low to reset and back to high--and it wasn't gentle, kind of abrupt.  And this was before the machine was loaded for the next load, the beginning of the washing process for that event.  Drove me nuts.  Explained to her that wasn't needed unless she was wanting to add more water after it had started agitating.  But she usually used full water level regardless of most load sizes.

NOT resetting for less, but using the previous load's Extra-Large:

Well, that was what I was afraid my wife was doing, even if the washer was set for the smallest load, if she didn't "reset" first...

Dave, you can show her by starting the water level on low and let it agitate then move the water level to medium to high and it will commence to fill until satisfied.
The only time reset should be used is on high to ex-high or when water will not fill to the next water level, otherwise she's wearing the infinite fill switch prematurely.

I think all reset does is hold the pressure switch and keep it closed indefinitely until you let go. Theoretically I think one could overflow their machine if they just kept holding it.

As for its purpose I'm guessing to add water after agitation has started on an already max water level. If I set a machine to medium and then turned it to its max level after agitation started it would start filling again without turning the knob to "reset".
