Tide Leaving Funky Odor Behind

Hello, long time lurker, first time poster. I have a newer Amana top loader, and I always wash in warm to hot water. Hot temp is 140f. I have noticed that no matter how clean the rinse water is, the tide leaves an almost sour vomit stench behind. It got to the point that I threw it out. I have moved onto tide free hygienic clean and all seems well again. Any clue why the scented tide did that? It was the new original scent. I prefer the German Persil because it rinses better and doesn’t have OBAS but it’s $50 for a large bottle around here.

Weird odor left behind by Tide

I know that many people have complained about the new Tide original scent since they changed it approximately a year ago. I've alternated between Tide Clean Breeze liquid and Tide Hygienic Clean liquid and use a traditional top loader with no issues, so maybe try a different Tide than the original one.

Oops...

After reading more carefully I see that your problem went away once you tried Tide Hygienic Clean. So there ya go, it's the original Tide causing the problem. Just buy something else. I'm glad I haven't bought the original in a while as it seems lots of people don't like it.

Might want to read up on liquid detergents becoming bacteria laden. Reports of skin infections have surfaced from..

Would imagine the older a liquid product gets the more likelyhood of bacteria growing in the detergent.

I've actually heard of this problem. I'm not sure if many people have a jug of liquid detergent around long enough to cause this, though. The big jugs usually last me about 2-3 months doing approximately 3 loads a week.

I actually quite like powdered detergent but the last time I used it, it made my wife's skin itch horribly and also left a weird dirty feeling in the bottom of my washer. Of course, this was Arm and Hammer powder, which is a more inferior product, so maybe that had something to do with it.

Tide needs to stop

I don’t know why they just don’t leave it alone. The reviews on PGs website tend to agree with me and many others. I didn’t know bacteria could grow in liquid detergent. I do go through it really quickly though so I doubt it was that. My water is hard here however I can’t see that being the issue either. Thanks for all the knowledge. This is a neat place to learn!

This is why I stick with Tide powdered detergent, never have issues with foul odors or anything like that. Only complaint about Tide powdered is it has a tendency to suds up quite a bit in my ‘63 Whirlpool and sometimes results in a suds lock but usually only seems to happen with towels for some reason.

Hard water. Is it well water? It could be something in your water that's reacting with the Tide perfume and giving it that smell.

One place I rented in Northern Minnesota had bad BAD well water with bacterial Iron. It literally came out of the faucet orange and smelling of rotten eggs. I learned a lot about the need for water treatment there.

It could also be a marketing trick on the part of P&G by trying to create the need for people to buy their fabric softener. This by trying to imply that the persons clothes are so stinky and wouldn't they be better with softener.

No well water at all. Just happen to live near the mountains. I think you’re onto something though - making it smell nasty on purpose just to make us buy unstoppables and softener

I know exactly what you are talking about. It happened to me with the original scent about 2 years ago, so I switched to mountain scent. Now it seems to have infiltrated the mountain scent so I switched back to original scent and all seems well again. I am a powder user for both dishwasher and laundry, so I hope Tide gets this fixed.

Persil P/U...

I had the same issue when Persil first hit the shelves...washed beach towels, put them in the closet...2 weeks later, for the next trip to the beach, took them out, and they reeked of a barf smell...have never used the liquid Persil, or any form, since.

Cleanclean, another thought?

Do you use fabric softener? Fabric softener and some liquid detergents used improperly can get gunked up inside the holes of the agitator, under the wash plate, in the dispenser, etc. where you can not see it. I used to occasionally use fabric softener, and I quit doing it for that reason. The other reason is fabric softeners and dryer sheets coat clothing. This can make it more difficult for detergent and water to penetrate the fabric during the next wash cycle. I occasionally use scent boosters now and haven't noticed the issue return. Most of my washes are warm with an occasional hot. Water heater is set to the recommended 120.

I have switched to almost exclusively using Tide original or Tide with bleach powder (this has a really pleasant scent!). I'd probably use Persil Power pearls if they had them for a reasonable price in the USA. When I did or do use liquids, I prefer Persil intense fresh or Tide hygienic. A shot of Dawn dishwashing soap can help with heavier soiled items like those used to work on autos. For those gym clothes and stuff like that, vinegar instead of fabric softener seems to help.

For those clothes that seem to hold odor, I have to say my front load with the heated water "sani cycle" seemed to work better. Without bleach, that cycle on my LG would remove mildew, pet accidents, and gym/yardwork clothes odor better.

Hello Pink. I do use softener but extremely rarely, so I doubt that’s the culprit. We also wash all laundry in either warm or hot.

I used Tide Original religiously for years and never had this issue up until the last bottle. It’s frustrating because P and G loves to tinker way too much. They really should leave things as they are especially seeing as the old formula performed just fine. I noticed that with my shampoo as well (Pantene). I think P and G reformulates it every other year and I have yet to say that any so called improvement was noticeable.

I’ve been using the Tide Ultra OXI Odor Eliminator liquid in my direct drive, it’s not the original scent it’s extremely potent and delicious, haven’t had that odd smell. I used the tide original a few times last year in our speed queens and it did not leave the strange odor. I wish they would just leave the recipes alone, and stop modifying them. Every few years the original Tide liquid scent changes and it’s not as good now as it used to be 5-10 years ago, it’s still nice smelling but not as good. I also wish they never discontinued the clean breeze tide powder and April fresh downy powder those two were my go to.
