It's 3 am, storming like hell, and the sirens have been going off since 6 pm. There's already reports of two deaths and extensive damage. With the exception of one month, I have lived here all my life, but I can NEVER remember having tornadoes in January.

Saw On The News Last Night

Tornado warnings were up for parts of the mid-west and south. It is this crazy warm weather we're having in most of the country. Was near 60F yesterday and will be near 65F today. Go figure.

Stay Safe!!!!!!!

Dorothy:
Run for the storm cellar!

Mother nature sure is getting weird. Seriously: Be careful!
Three days ago it was in the teens here (*F) and these days it's approaching 60*F in JANUARY for heaven's sake.

Same here, it was in the teens then suddenly went into the upper 60's, lower 70's. It is 6:42am and 68 right now.

hang in there.. i remember tornados in jan along with other strange things.. like toggle said somthing strange is going on in the world..im not sure if its some sort of climate shift or what but along with all the other odd things going on with the weather it seems like all sorts of trees and plants are dying around here and thats strange too. oh and before i forget to ask hey andy have you been feeling any like mild or tiny earth tremors down your way?? i have been feeling them here and i dont like the thought of that

It was 8 C (46 F) here yesterday which was another record breaker for this part of the country. Normally we are lucky if it gets up to -20 C (-4 F) at this time of year. And last evening we had a incredible thunder and lightning show, again very rare at this time of year. Another record was broken when we got 21 mm of rain.

Anytime you get air masses mixing and the jet stream mixing in with the convergence zone you get this kind of weather. On this past trip I have flown in some of the bumpiest weather I have ever flown in. It's uncomfortable for some people.
Global warming at its finest?

Whatever

the cause (and my vote is with the serious scientists), I do hope you are safe, Andy.
Gosh, only been in one tornado directly.
That was in Kansas and more than enough for me for several lifetimes.
Nasty, brutish things.
Stay well!

Here too...

Last week(New Years eve) we had 6+ inches of snow, followed by some single digit temps...it was ugly.
For the past couple of days temps around here have been in the middle 50's, yesterday it was 65!
As I was falling asleep last night there was a furious storm passing through, and while not immediately around me I could hear several different tornado sirens blaring from surrounding suburbs.
It was worse and more violent south of here, there were reports of a tornado on the ground just east of Joliet about 6pm yesterday, which is Michael's neck of the woods.
Glad to hear everyone is safe! I am sure next week we will have a different story to tell!

I love tornado weather! Grab a beer, head outside to meet the neighbors and watch the sky! We might as well have the tornadoes since the hurricane season has been a bust for 2 years now...

my sypathies

As a survivor of mother natures wrath ( a disastorous flood in 72 that killed 235 of my nieghbors in less than four hours) my heart and prayers are with you. Weve been watching it on the news, I know what youre going through.

By the way toggles, remember back when it wasnt nice to fool mother nature? You should see what happens when she gets pissed

Well everything's ok at home and at the store. We had some soffit torn off of the side of the garage, which isn't that big of a deal compared to what happened to some of these outlying towns. There are some limbs down, but the limbs that would have caused the most damage came down last year in the ice storm anyway. After I got done posting I had to go downstairs because it was so hot and humid up in my bedroom.

Chris, I haven't felt any tremors and I hope I don't anytime soon. The New Madrid faultline scares the hell out of me. The force of the 1812 earthquake here in Missouri rang churchbells in Boston.

Had a record day here yesterday as well.. 15.6 or 61 F. then the tornado watch warnings came on the tv about 6pm but other than a bit of rain and some thunder and lightning we didn't get hit with anything.

In checking weather reports for Cincinnati, I have found to my astonishment that it's warmer THERE than it is in Los Angeles! It's 66d. in Cin. today and only 53 in L.A.

Now THAT is weird.

{{{*oooooooEEEooooooo!*}}}

Aerosol cans = bad weather. Huh???

Glad to hear everything is relatively OK in your area, Andy. I'll bet that was so strange hearing the sirens in January. I remember that only happening once here - in early December.

No major storms or even precipitation around here, just sunny and mild. Highs in the upper 30's with a chance of snow toward the end of the week - but only a slight chance.

It was pouring

I was on my way to work this morning at 5:15 and it was raining cats and dogs. Apparently the Tornado Watch expired at 5 am but we were still under a T-Storm Warning IIRC. Columbia got pummeled with 1 inch diameter hail and there was a tornado spotted in California (small town 20 mins west of Jefferson City.) I just got off the phone with Andy, and it is strange we both agree that Southwest MO gets hit more often with severe weather

There were tornadoes in Wisconsin last night, which, as has been pointed out from others, is just not what normally happens up here in January! In the southwest corner of Minnesota, we're in our 4th day of a January thaw; again, not normal.

not complaining...

I don't mind the cold so much, its winter and goes with living in this part of the country.
I dislike the snow more, I think because of the way my association handles the removal of it--They don't!
It could snow all it wants, and as long as I can get my driveway clean and have some clean sidewalks to walk Jack on, I'd be ok with it all.
At least with all the snow melted, and the rain the salt is all gone from the roads. I can get the car washed and it will look nice for more than 10 minutes!

I just discovered today that the strong winds knocked a limb off the maple tree in our front yard, fell onto the back of my car and bent the antenna.

Is Al Gore right and we're taking global warming for granted?

How big would Al Gore's carbon footprint be, I wonder? Now, folks, something good always comes of something bad. The warmer it is, the less you'll need to heat, therefore reducing your carbon footprint. Isn't that a good thing? Of course if your house gets sucked into the stratosphere, well, that's freaky.

I am a 'global warming' skeptic, especially when it comes to all the hype and tripe that is being passed off as science-fact. 'Maybe and might, could be, possibly, perhaps' are not the language of science-fact, nor should they be taken as such. As Toggles already suggested - 'normal' is a setting on your washer and it ain't necessarily customary. As much as we loathe and try to resist it, change is part of the course and mother nature follows her own rules.

Now, for anyone out there, who can scientifically prove that human activity is causing catastrophic global warming - there is a $150,000 prize to be won, just follow the attached link. I know Al Gore is very rich and has very big feet, though, since he knows so much about 'global warming' - claiming that prize to put us sceptics in our place ought to be a trifle for him. Then again he is probably too busy polishing his Nobel prize.

It's nice and warm where I am - hope you all stay cozy.

Cheers

Actually, anyone who knows anything about science knows that it's all about theory, for science is constantly evolving.

As for "hype and tripe", most of that is coming from the corporate scientists who are financed by the oil companies.

My thought is this: even if global warming is bunk (which I don't think it is) the idea behind reducing greenhouse gases makes perfect sense: Not only are the products that causes these gases causing warming, they are also causing a host of diseases, and helping fund terrorism. Why not move beyond nineteenth century technology?

But there are always those ostriches who never let facts get between their head and the sand. Thankfully, we have people like Gore, who have the courage and intelligence to stand up to that crowd.

If science is constantly evolving, how come we are stuck with the same shrill dooomsday propaganda and no actual scientific debate on this issue? If it is all so legitimate, why is there a need to shout down and patronize people with alternative viewpoints? Especially within the scientific fraternity.

In my view, that already speaks volumes about the quality of information that underpins the message.

I find it fascinating how people are so willing to buy into a concept which has the same factual accuracy of a coin flip. Billions of (taxpayer's) dollars are being committed to what end? Why don't we commit to real, factual issues, in the same way and with the same sense of moral superiority?

By the way I am not an ostrich and I do have the courage to stand up to people like you.

Cheers
