Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Cool find, GG (and a hot find for you, Toggles!)

As long as the popcorn is kept air-tight, it can be kept just about anywhere, including the cupboard. Air-tight is the key. Since popcorn kernels depend on the moisture inside to pop (interior steam pressure explodes the kernel) they'd dry out otherwise. 14% internal moisture for the ideal pop, incidentally!

I used to make so damned much of the stuff, the girl who had the back half of the house I lived in back in Buffalo gave me this for Christmas one year about 25 years ago. Peanut butter and jelly popcorn? Don't knock it till you've tried it!

I am sure your little oven was marketed in the early 70s in the UK by Russell Hobbs as "Roaster Toaster". My Grandmother had one and swore by it.
I remember her's sat on top of her "English Electric Liberator" semi automatic washing machine. Was fascinated by both, the door on the toaster used to lift and the shelf popped out when the toast was ready.

Nice job steve. Many of those GE toaster ovens have moved thru my place and on to Ebay. For a while they commanded a fair sum. Yours is the later Toaster-Oven-Broiler model and you got the broiler pan still with it. Earlier models didn't have the broil feature. Last one I found was a yellow model. I never knew they came in anything but black or faux-bois. Me thinks there's still probably harf a dozen of them down here in the pit. LOL I'm biding my time till the prices arise once again.

~Hmmm, that white insulation on the wires in your little grill: asbestos?
I thought so too!

~The top and the bottom are connected.
OMG I didn't intend that one or see it co----- er---uh----sneaking up on me!

I took the faux butcher-block look glued-on wallpaper off. The black sides look very elegant, even uncovered.

The design of the entire unit overall was NOT user friendly in terms of clean-up ability.

popper lid

and i meant "popcorn" popper ;) ...nothing else. Why don't you try a lid from a can of coffee or canned nuts or something similar? Looks like the size would be about right...might want to put a few holes in the lid to let the steam out...

Gary, do me a favor, hon. Take and post a pic of the sides, of that toater-oven purdy please!

If I'm invited again, (and with spousal permission) this just MAY be the Yankee swap gift next Christmas, or the next Massachussets gathering, if earlier.

It works perfectly!

Next to it's Sista

Found at the same thrift store just a few months back

Steve cleaned this one up to perfection also.

I actually use it as my daily driver....Continuous clean and a little bell that tells you that toasting it complete.

Yes those GE toaster/oven/broilers are a nightmare for creases and crevices, sharp edges and finger slicing wires. Virtually impossible to clean the interior without taking them apart so nobody does. You can't even clean the backside of the glass door without removing it to get that top 1/2 inch.
The gall of Cuisinart to pirate the design. They also brought out a clone of the venerable Salad Shooter and iirc one of the egg cookers as well I think.

Anyone ever hear of keeping unpopped kernels in the freezer

My mom always stored popcorn in the refrigerator. I've also heard that you should store coffee in either the frig or freezer.

Storing coffee in the refrigerator or freezer is something some purists don't like. There is a chance of coffee picking up off tastes (apparently, coffee has been suggested as a refrigerator deodorizer). Freezing can, some say, hurt the taste.

Although, I have been known to freeze coffee. I don't do it all the time, but there have been times I've tossed some into the freezer as an emergency reserve supply, for at times like when I'm snowed in and can't get out to get coffee. At those times, I'm happy to have the coffee, and don't really care about the taste being slightly altered.

Toggle I have that same Cuisinart oven and I was struck when I came across it how similar it was to the old GEs. It's a great oven though, I use it all the time. This is actually the first time in my life I've had one and particularly for a single person they're ideal!

I refrigerated my coffee for a long time, but switched to freezing and I think that works better. Since I only make it at home on weekends most times, having it sit out really doesn't work. I also refrigerate popcorn when I have it in the house.

The guys who run the coffee house that we buy our coffee from recommend putting your coffee in an airtight container and then freezing it. They said if you put it in the refrigerator it is more likely to pick up moisture.
We buy our coffee in whole bean format. We found these nifty plastic jars with a one touch button top that seals them airtight. If anyone is interested in them, I can post a photo.
We keep them in the freezer.

Gas cooking is very hot in the summer. so my mom used to crank out many a lunch from her toaster-oven all summer long.

Freezing coffee in an airtight container is key. In theory such an act is to prevent "volatile" gasses from evaporating, and to keep essential oils fresh. (Essential as in essence/smell).

I don't

see why freezing in an airtight container should cause problems. I am the only 'real' coffee drinker in my parents' house. Not overfond of US coffee 'brands', I buy a few pounds of coffee beans at the local health foods store when they have a sale, store it in genuinely air-tight containers with oxygen scavengers and freeze it.

Freshly ground, it tastes great.

I do recall learning in Home Economics that the oils in coffee oxidize rapidly enough that there is a difference in taste after only 20 minutes!

$79 still not bad but a year ago these were going for $120-$140. I sold a few of them for that plus shipping on top as did others. Then they started showing up so much prices fell. Same with the Sunbeam T30 toasters, the ones that self lower etc.. those used to command good money but now only fetch $30-$50 which is still very good considering you can find them quite often for $5
