Tucson AZ on Rachel Rays $40 a day

Hey Ross..

Glad you like living in Tucson and I hope you didn't take any offense to my post. I lived there for a year back in 1991.Do you live in the foothills near River Rd?..I lived right off River.
I am actually not a hot weather, non season person. Why am I in Florida? lol..Actually Florida is not one of my favorite places either. I love the seasons,green trees etc. I grew up on Long Island and the summers there could be brutal as well with the humidity and such. But, I guess I just am a die hard New Yorker. What keeps me in FL?..My Partner has to be here due to his career in law. also good friends like AndrewinOrlando and Stone75,both of which I would miss dearly.

Yeah, I've got no beef with Tucson either...I've never even been there! I've just never been moved to travel out that way yet.

One time we had friends in from Cali who wanted to see the "real New York".....well, they got it when our car broke down off the Gowanus Canal drawbridge!

(Picture hell, with rust, broken concrete, desolation, vermin, urban blight, hot and cold running winos, and an orange waterway.

It was the water that was orange.)

Point is, places are rarely the way they are portrayed on TV.

I always enjoy my visits to Tucson, but of course much of that has to do with my dear friends who live there, and those that sometimes join us on visits. When I would first visit there (coming from Minnesota) it seemed so odd to me that everything was brown and people didn't really have lawns. But as you visit more, you come to appreciate the beauty of the desert in its own way.

I would do better there than in Florida, because I don't like humidity, but LA is the ideal for me. It's not humid and it never really changes. After a lifetime in Minnesota I just want to live my life and not worry about what the weather is going to do to foil my plans or get in my way. The people who live in "season areas" most successfully are those that forge ahead without regard to such things, but I'm not such a person.

I thought about living in Arizona at one point, but, and they seem to share this issue with Florida as well, nobody pays anything. They want to pay you $8 or $9 and act like they're doing you a favor doing it, and no, the cost of living is not that much cheaper there. One of my friends there has a good job while two others are self-employed, and they seem go get on ok, but not so for my line of work at least when I was checking into it.

Far as Rachel Ray, I'll be happy to learn of some new dining options there. One of my very favorites, that I would always request to visit on each trip, moved to another location after decades in the same mid-century character-laden place. It's just not the same and they kinda lost me.

Tucson

Someone will have to enlighten me as far as weather in Tucson in March, but the way I see it, the Arizona landscape will be a welcome sight after the dull grey Chicago winter.

My rental car for the wash in will be a convertible(not the Hoover kind though) so I am hoping for some warm!

I'm going to Tucson......

As someone who grew up with lots of green and lots of rain, I was initially put off by Tucson's landscape (or lack of). I thought it brown, drab, and harsh. However, upon leaving the industrial/commercial area and approaching the foothills, I found Tucson absolutely breathtaking! The striking desert colours and rock formations were gorgeous. It was also pretty sobering to see how abruptly the city ends and the desert begins. All I could imagine was how dark and desolate it would be driving out there at night.

The good thing about the desert climate is since there is no grass (even the highway medians are rock and scrubby plants)and the plants are drought tolerant, it leaves lots of time for fun activities; like washers and swimming in the pool.

Jeff, the days in Tucson are warm during March, but the nights are deceptively cool. Make sure you bring a jacket for the evening activities at Ross and Roger's; most of which were outside. If breakfast is at Nate's, the morning should be pleasant.

Is Tucson for everyone? Probably not. However, it does have its own unique beauty that shouldn't be missed on a visit.

As far as Rachel's $40/day...I love that show, but our gracious and talented hosts (and our dear Toggle) cooked up meals that would rival any of Rachel's selections! Bring on the Sansabelts!

I look forward to seeing the Tucson landscape. Growing up and living all my life in the midwest something so different sounds appealing to me.
My favorite landscape is LA's with its palm trees...

Thanks Venus for the weather tips too. I am planning on bringing a jacket or too, still have not settled on if I should have short sleeves or long sleeves, or if I should bring shorts, but am planning on leaving the gloves and scarf in Chicago. I did buy something new for the pool too, and I made sure the hotel we're staying in(Hampton Inn North) has a pool.
I am very excited about the trip, seeing and meeting everyone, and seeing all the collections.
Michael has been studying vacuums and washers and such too, and is learning fast!
This wash in will be a blast!

I coudn't have done it without our beloved Terry, who really shoud have been the master chef that day, and Ross allowing me to comandeer his kitchen. When I get to Texas I wanna be Venus' helper!

Anyhoo, my t-ts in the oven was a labor of love. .....(or maybe that bitch Toggle was just trying to show-off. The jury is still out.) *LOL*

Personally I can't wait to see everyone again and meet some new faces! The Tucson holy trinity are FABOO in my eyes.

Oh Steve, you know that I am always happy to assist you in the kitchen or anywhere for that matter.LOL We had such a blast. Steve is a great cook and it was great to have some new treats to make. Not sure what is on tap for this year but you know I'll be there to help in any way. Venus, we are going to have to come up with some great treats again. Sure looking forward to seeing you all.
