I read a thread in the archives about all of the different vacuums on TV of the past. Here are a few more. Sanford and Son always had an old Hoover next to kitchen door, Aunt Bea used a Hoover upright and a Hoover Constellation on Andy Griffith, Lilly Munster used an old Westinghouse with the suction reversed to exhaust, Mrs. Garrett used a Hoover on Different Strokes, and in a Walton's Reunion Elizabeth vacuumed the living room rug with a Hoover 150. Does anyone remember any more? Tim

GE Roll Easy

Tim,

Dennis the Menace's mother used a GE Roll Easy in at least 2 episodes and of course there is the famous Westinghouse in, "I Love Lucy." Ricky also used a Hoover 60 or 61 upright in another episode. Samatha Stevens always had Hoover DAM's. In one episode of "The Andy Griffith Show", Barney quit being a Deputy to sell vacuums and he was selling a Hoover 65 convertible--unfortunately it was in black and white so we don't get to see the wonderful pink colors. Also, in an episode of, "All In The Family", sitting in front of the coat closet was what looks like an old upright Westinghouse. You only get to see it for a split second so I may be wrong. It may be a GE upright post war. There are many manufacturers post war that made uprights that looked like GE/Premiere/Westinghouse etc.

On "Everybody Loves Raymond", they did a whole episode about a vacuum similar to the Rainbow. Harriet Nelson used a GE Swivel Top or was it a Westinghouse? Any others out there we can think of?

TV vacuums

I Love Lucy: Lucy Ricardo was hard on vacuums. She had a Hoover 29, 62, Westy upright and tank, and towards the end of the series a Hoover Convertible model 65

Bewitched: Samantha was wild about her Hoover Dial A Matic 1100

Dick Van Dyke: Laura was tough on vacuums too. She originally had a model 68 Convertible, followed by a model 1100 DAM, then an 1110 DAM, and finally a model 70 Convertible.

The Partridge Family: Shirley used a Regina Upright with headlight and houndstooth print bag.

The Brady Bunch: Alice cleaned casa Brady with a model 1020 Hoover Convertible, and a rebuilt Electrolux of some type.

All in the Family: Edith had a slew of vacuums too. First was a horizontal motor Kirby style upright, followed by a model 719 Hoover Convertible, followed by a model 1149 DAM, followed by a model U4059 Convertible.

TV Vacuums

It's really neat to think about all of those vacuums. I wonder if they were chosen by a set manager or designer? I also remember Mama on Mama's Family used a 70's Hoover Convertible.

I'm not quick enough to spot things I guess. The only two appliances I ever remember noting were Samanthas Flair oven but never new what it was and that ring of circular burners the Clampetts had in their kitchen, don't know what that is still.

TV Vacuums - Sanford and Son

I believe that the vacuum on Sanford and Son was a vintage Kenmore circa the 1940's or late 1930's, My Dad gave my mother one of these Christmas 1949. I was lucky enough to be able to add this identical machine to my collection last year.

I remember on Bewitched Samantha had a Lewtyt Electric Broom, it was green, my grand mother had a tan one just like it. But mostly you saw the Hoover DAM.

Donna Reed used a "Roll-Easy" in one show.

Major Nelson had a DAM in "I Dream of Jeanie"

Wilma Flintstone used a small Wooley Mamouth to vacuum, don't know the year or model LOL and of course all Looney Tune characters had to use the Acme Brand and on Roger Rabbit it was a suck-o-lux.

Re: I Love Lucy:

Also had the "Handy-Dandy" Vacuum Cleaner, that was sold Door-To-Door, from the Guy played by Sheldon Leonard. He talked her into the Vacuum Cleaner, after going back to get the "Handy-Dandy" Kitchen Machine, that was supposed to Slice, Dice, make French-Fries, etc. when Lucy would turn the Handle, but it never worked like it was supposed too, naturally...

Vacs of tv past

I've never heard of Hardware Wars. What is it?
I remember in the opening credits of Friends there was a Rainbow in Monica's apartment. Maude used a Eureka upright, an old Kirby was used in "I'll fly Away", and a Lux tank in The Golden Girls.

CBS TV shows

Maude, All in the Family, The Jeffersons, and One Day at a Time were all filmed at Television City in Hollywood.

Maude had a Hoover Convertible 719 with Florida, and later a model U4089 with Mrs. Naugatuck. In one episode she even referred to it as "Hoover"
Edith Bunker first had the 719 Convertible.
Mike & Gloria later had the 1149 Dial A Matic Edith had.
Edith's U4059 Convertible was also used on the Jeffersons, and on One Day At a Time. This cleaner is easily identifable as the handle is all taped where the cord enters.
One Day At a Time also had a BIG Hoover model 918.

WOW

Hoover,
you really know your vacuums. I thought the vacuum on Maude was a Eureka though. Guess I was wrong. It still seems that Hoover is winning the contest of being on the most television programs. Tim

I just recalled My Favorite Martian used a Hoover the same way Samantha did. There was also an Elecrtrolux in the series.

Edith also used a Royal-built upright. There was also an episode of Here's Lucy where Lucy uses a Royal upright.

Tim,
The Munsters did not use a Westinghouse tank vacuum cleaner. There are at least two episodes with the featured vacuum.

I would not count out General Electric as being in plenty of shows. There are plenty of Screen Gem shows that featured GE like I Dream of Jeannie, The Donna Reed Show, and like someone mentioned, Dennis the Menace. There was a Doris Day Show episode where they used a GE RollAround swiveltop. They put tape over the logo(GE still made vacuum cleaners at the time).

Charlie,

You are right about the Nelsons. At one time, Hotpoint was the sponsor of the show(or part of the show). I have an episode where she is vacuuming. You do not see the vacuum cleaner, but you can see the hose and wand and see that it is a GE. I remember another episode where Ozzie lets the Professional capret cleaners in to clean his rug. I have to laugh, because they brought in a GE RollAround to prevacuum the carpeting.

parunner58.

You are right about the Lewyt being in Bewitched. There was one episode where she rushes to put the cleaning equipment away, because of company coming. This was the only episode without a Hoover. Well, the attachments she was putting away were Hoover.

Here's Lucy

GESwivel,

There was also an episode of "Here's Lucy", where she is selling a Filter Queen Majestic at a garage sale and while demonstrating it, Lucy gets an interested buyer's sarong caught in the hose. That buyer is the actress that played "Mother Nature" in the Parkay Margaine commercials.

Charlie

Roseanne used a Hoover Dial-a-Matic to clean the basement. In another episode she used an '80s Electrikbroom; the dust bag was flaccid with the sound of the motor dubbed.

Father KnowsBest

Does anyone remember a vacuum being used on Father Knows Best? What kind was it?

GE Swivel,
What kind of vacuum was used on The Munster? I remember some kind of tank being used to blow dust instead of suck it up. Tim

I remember Nell Carter on "Gimmee a Break" using a canister vac with a beige poly-vynil wire reinforced hose. You could see the vac it self. She was working by a fish tank when she was distracted. She had been using just the wand and as she was distracted the hose end slipped into the fish tank and quickly sucked in like 2/3 of the water.
I mean come on. Not even a utility vac can do that.

I remember on the Munsters Lilly spewing dust some type vac. Wasn't it a vertical tank? Her version of Dusting was to spread the dust around. They also had a water Hardening service. I have all those episodes, I should go through and find the ones with a vacuum cleaner. Anyone know the episodes?

I remember on Eight is Enough the Bradford's had an Electrolux Golden Jubilee vac?

Karen Fairgate in Knots Landing had a 1981 Sears Best Kenmore Canister which Diana was attempting to take over to Abbys.

The Show Ned and Stacey, Stacey (Debra Messing) was using a Panasonic upright near the front door late at night in an attempt to distract Ned who was actually out of the apartment.
