Hi all!
A few of you know I've recently purchased my first home. I had been looking for a catalog home, a nice sears home or something along those lines, but instead settled on a tiny cape cod because of price and location. I've been pretty happy with the place, and this past week while making some repairs I've noticed something.. my house is indeed a catalog home!
It turns out the place is an early prefab. It was assembled on a slab by a company called Belleray Homes in the early 1950s. It was manufactured by a company called Gunnison Magichomes, most likely in Indiana. The wall sections came premade, from marine grade plywood, 2by stock and rockwool insulation, bound together with a resin glue. The sections were bolted together on site, and the house most likely went up in less than a week.
I've been looking for my houses number plate, which is supposed to be in the laundry room, but not been able to find it. There were 39 other Gunnison Magichomes built in my area, and as far as I can tell, they are mostly still there and in very nice shape. I've noticed some of the other models have the same metal chimney with two vent-lines on it - Gunnison was a subsidiary of US Steel.
Is there anyone out there who has a Gunnison home, or who is a catalog house buff? I'd love to see some construction pictures, or a catalog with options and other models.
PS. Yes, I hate that mailbox. Its coming out in the spring, to be replaced with something a little less "Fisher Price".
