Model 28

A classic and long runner-post war, so from mid to late forties until about 1951-2 when the 29 came out, a machine almost in a class by itself. The 28 was the "Popular" priced model and sold an incredible amount. Again, our Hoover historian Jeff Parker can give the statistics. Here is one of my 28's (shamefully with a major replacement bag) next to the 29, 63 and 64.

Model 28

Chris,
Model 28 was manufactured from May 1946 to May 1950, when it was "officially" replaced by model 29. It remained quietly in production after that for a couple of years and was only available as a commercial machine.
Model 28 was known as the "popular price" cleaner, selling for $69.50, plus another $18 for the tools. It came out just as the servicemen were all coming home from the war, and sold like gangbusters. With over 897,000 produced, this was the biggest selling single model Hoover had up to that point.
There are still alot of them left too, and in use.
Congrats on a great find!
Jeff

Yikes! That Replacement Bag is Awful!

OK, it's got to go. I'll either find a decent original (very hard to do) or make one up. Better brush up on my sewing skills!

Those Hoovers are wonderful Fred, while I've seen the brown models before I didn't realize they came in Red, White and Blue too!

Model 29 and 63 Bags

The model 29 was a dump-out bag (I got a little confused by the term dumpster). The first real paper bag Hoover was the Model 61 (keep me honest here Jeff) or it may have been the 60. The first paper bags were referred to as Handi-Sacs and could be emptied from the top which opened and was sealed with a metal clip. The 63 was the first (I believe) to have the narrower type C bags used for years after that.

Hoover bags

The first Hoover with the paper bag was the 1940 model 60, and it featured the reusable "hygenisac" later known as the Handisac. Airway sued Hoover over the Hygenisac, as they had a patent on the paper bag. Hoover got out of it because their bag was reusable.
Models 60-61-62 used the Hygenisac. Dumpout bags were optional for models 60 and 61.
The first model to use what we now know as TYPE C bags was the 1953 model 63.
Good job Fred!

Rare Hoover Option for the 28

Fred and Jeff,

I will post pictures here later that show the unusual but correct Hoover optional Handisac disposable bag that was available for the 28 and almost any Hoover that took the same round bag fitting. I know you both saw it in Chicago in 2004. When I got it from Brother Christopher I thought Mike Rogers would fall over. He knew it was an option from Hoover and after many years in the vacuum business had never seen one, (except in Hoover literature if I remember correctly), until it was brought in at the convention.

I am really grateful that I was in the right place at the right time and now have it. I can move it from a 150 to the 450 to the 28 and any other round opening bagged Hoover. And, it is wonderful to be able to use those vintage machines with a Hoover sanctioned disposable bag!

Love this talk about Hoovers!

28's handisac option

Charlie,
rare doesen't even describe how rare the GENUINE 28 conversion bag is.
I remember that cleaner from the 2004 convention.
Strangely enough, there was just one on ebay last week, went for over $100!
Looking forward to the pics
Jeff

Our

Jeff,
I wanted to show you the Electrolux G that Tania and I have joint custody of. She is a beauty and works well. I know you are a die hard Hoover man but you have to admit, that is a nice vintage Lux.

Charlie, I thought all 28's had the cloth dump bag...WOW!!! I remember seeing a similar part on eBay and wondered why it ended so high. LOVE the colors on the Model G...I'm drooling already!

My absolute favorite 'Lux has to be the Hospital G, with that ultra-cool filter in the back. I heard those machines were near-silent in operation...an already quiet machine to begin with made even quieter!!

Those Type W/Handisac reusable paper bags are neat as well. How many uses do you typically expect out of these before you toss them?
