Bob very few people could afford to spring for an ice maker in their fridge back then, so even though they were available, having other options to make ice cubes more conveniently would be attractive to bargain buyers of appliances. Also, remember you need to have a plumbed water supply to your fridge for an ice maker, yet another expense and hassle for those on a budget.

My family never had an ice maker, and I still don’t to this day. We had one for about 2 years before we moved to this home. I was a nice convenience, but I don’t miss it. Making ice in an ice tray is no big deal.

Well then I guess the Kellys were rich

The Kellys, Mr. Kelly was a surly devout Catholic engineer who was a rude usher at the church, had an icemaker in a Coldspot top freezer.  They had 7 kids so I guess he sprung for the icemaker.  We did not get one until 1975 when dad bought the coppertone Coldspot SXS refrigerator when we moved to the present house.
