Some more help please:

 

I have an early A406 with the original Powerfin Agitator. I want to remove it but, before I destroy it:

 

<ol>
<li>It doesn't have a set-screw in the side of the agitator.</li>
<li>It has what looks like a huge Philips-head set of slots in a poly circle down inside the agitator, about the size of and old silver dollar and the two slots make up a cross that's almost two inches each.</li>
</ol>
Does one unscrew this slot to remove the agitator or is it held in place with friction?

As usual  all advice is appreciated.

I will try to take a pic of the inside of the agitator, but it's filthy.

This agitator just pulls up and out, there are no screws etc

This older design has a metal insert in the plastic agitator that tends to get really stuck, if you can't pull it out try putting 6 gallons of boiling water in the tub for maybe 1/2 hour then drain it out then use a puller on it, if this does not work you will likely have to break it out.

On a MT this old this is only the first of at least a half dozen challenges you will face to get this machine operational.

That’s a beautiful CA406!

Looks like it’s still in really nice shape. To remove the agitator, I would suggest getting some of those airbags that movers use to lift some of the really heavy pieces of furniture, placing them under the agitator, and pressurizing them as much as you can. Then, take the hottest water you can get, remove the lint filter, and pour it down the center of the agitator. I’ve removed several stuck washplates on modern washers this way. I’ve also had success with running a set of ratchet straps under the agitator, and hooking them over the sides of the machine , then tightening them to apply lifting pressure. However, I wouldn’t recommend the latter option on a machine with a nice finish, which yours appears to have.

There is a special inflatable tool designed to remove seized agitators, can't remember what it was called off hand however.

Restoring an A406 Maytag

Hi Ken, why are you removing the agitator first of all?

I assume if you’re removing it, you’re planning to rebuild the machine, the possible problems could include finding a seal and bearing assembly, rebuilding a transmission or replacing it, rebuilding or replacing an inlet valve, rebuilding or replacing the damper pads, after that you’ve got the usual host of possible motor timer other electrical problems, etc.

What’s the functional condition of the machine currently are you using this machine ?
