Waffles with my Aunt

Hmmm

I had never heard of putting vanilla in waffle or pancake batter until a friend of mine mentioned it. I thought she had invented the concept.

And now here's Steve's recipe with vanilla. Is this standard? Did I just miss something?

In my house, pancakes and waffles were always made with Bisquick.

Steve,,,this recipe sounds GREAT. I have a pre-nonstick iron and I really have to spray the heck outta that thing to prevent sticking. Ken bought me a non-stick and I just can not use it..I like the old one..imagine that.

I love homemade waffles and have a couple of beautiful Sunbeam irons but rarely go to the trouble to make them. I don't know if the recipie I used called for vanilla, but it sure sounds good. I put a bit of vanilla in my french toast batter. Has anyone/everyone noticed the price of vanilla has come way down? I'm loving it - and stocking up on the Madagascar Vanilla from William's Sonoma.

The first time I used one of my Sunbeam irons was a year ago August when Robert, Jon, Scott and Terry were here for a visit. The first waffle stuck to the grids and ripped to shreds when I tried to pull it apart. Everyone suddenly got skinny on me and we gave up!

Well Veg-O-Matic, {et-al} I only use Bisquick for Drop Biscuits, sometimes Pancakes {aka: Hotcakes, Flapjacks, American Tortillias} and Coffee Cake {on the Bisquick Package} but all of my Homemade Waffles are always made with the Family Recipe.

"BTW" the Vanilla has been in the Recipe for quit a long time now, through the Pass-Down of the Recipe to others. Someone in the Family a long time ago, called them "Awful Waffles" and it has stuck with the rest of us, through the years and Families. It sounds like someone ended up with "Awful Waffles" a while back, with their experience, especially with Company visiting as well.

Greg I am glad to hear that the price of vanilla is coming down. It was up to almost 30 dollars a bottle at William Sonoma a while back. I remember the trouble with the waffle iron, we may just have to give that another try. Terry

I got the vanilla tonight - $19 dollars/8 oz. bottle retail. I think the highest I remember seeing it was $32.

VERY critical that the grids on vintage waffle irons be well greased AND that there's oil in the batter

That is exactly the reason why when I wrote about using a Vintage Waffle Cooker, that I mentioned about making sure that you use the suggested amount of Oil in the Batter and using a Cooking Spray {PAM or Mazzola, etc} on the Grids, before pouring the Batter, so the Waffles wouldn't stick to the Grids.

I think we did all that and they still stuck! I think it helps that the iron gets 'seasoned' after a few uses. If we hadn't given up at the urging of the skinny people, after a few more trys I'm sure it would have been fine.

were absolutely terrific. I made a batch for supper and they were so nice, light and fluffy. I did make one change though, I substituted sour milk for the buttermilk as I didn't have any in the house. You couldn't tell the difference IMO.
