"To tell the truth, thinking of my long journey ahead

frightens me."

I wish I had seen this. It would have helped me to know I had a fellow brother out there in a  similar circumstance and maybe I can help you now. I left Wednesday for a solo six hour one-way road trip, and I was anxious because this was my first trip in four years. At the end of the first very edgy hour, I thought I had left the valve open on my ancient KM dryer that has a faint internal leak in the ignition, and the whole notion of my house exploding and all my beautiful machines blown to smithereens was just so overwhelming I started to laugh at my fears, and then I relaxed. The trip home today was a breeze as I'm sure yours will be,  so good luck.

I'm so glad you got to meet Greg,  one of the unsung humble heroes of Aworg. I haven't gotten to Omaha--met him elsewhere--  but he has  invited me as I'm sure he'd invite any us, and I hope some day to get there and visit him and his treasures.

I love the expression of subtle awe on your face on first viewing the wonders of the Unimatic. Nice catch, Greg!!!

This is a great saga and I'm happy  you've shared it with us; it lifts up the heart.

Sorry about the bikini reference. Have seen your name name so many times and being slow on the double meaning thing, I thought in a moment of insight  many years later that you meant bikini. But now I see it's your name.  Satisfied that I  finally got the sexy joke way too late in the game and blew it. Forgive me.

Godspeed,  Brian,  on your return.

hey beekeyknee....

i hope you have a safe trip home. please keep us posted on your trip progress so we know you are safe.

God bless you & be with you, on your journey back home.....

:o)

I made it all the way from Wendover, NV to my parent's house in Sweet Springs, MO, a little "wide spot in the road" half way between Kansas City and Columbia. I left Wendover on Tue. at 1:00 PM Mountain Time and arrived at my parents today at approximately 11:00 AM Central Time. I slept a long time at The Rainbow Casino Hotel in Wendover, so I just drove all night and part of the morning and slept from noon until 7 this evening. I'm going to go back to bed soon, as I am still tired. I'll go on to Columbia tomorrow.

Christina, I'll post what Drew sent back with me when I get home.

We Easterners forget how massive the western states are and how long long long it takes to cross just one of them.

What a saga, what a trek, what a voyage. what a quest!

Safe home, Brian!

Were it not for some rotten kids....

who turned the water off while their Imperial 21 was running so the Mom thought it was broken and left it in a house I ended up renting, it's unlikely I would have found this site and would have missed out on this touching and heart-warming story.
So, Thank You for mischievous children.
And I was wondering if anyone thought of telling the woman who owned these previously what happened after they left her?
I'm sure she would be pleased.

Christine.

"some rotten kids"....

oh that is too funny!!!
LOL.....

the poor mom was probably wondering what the heck happened with this crazy whirpool washing machine. and the kids were probably sitting back, getting the biggest kick ever, watching her go crazy, trying to figure out what was wrong with her washing machine!!!

that poor woman probably hated whirlpool washing machines after that incident left her scratching her head!!!

I'll never know

but I could wager you're probably right.
Funny thing was, is that all it needed was a "kick-start" with some really hot water to loosen the hardened/cooked soap in the bottom.
The new ones nowadays would probably die outright if the same thing happened.
Gotta love these almost indestructable machines!

I'm new here too...

...and, like CTV, came here for other interests. In my case, another member's issues with a Hobart commercial dish machine. He'd sought help at another forum that I frequent and he had therefore mentioned this web site. I have interests in commercial appliances since I repair them. So, I checked this site out.

When I got here, I scanned the threads and this one's title immediately caught my eye (WAKE THE DEAD? Hmmm...).

Fifteen years ago, the house I bought and moved into had all coppertone appliances (GE stove, GE oven, Coldspot fridge...no washer & dryer). I think they were original from the '50s. I liked them and...I do have an affinity for older appliances. They really, truly DO NOT build them like they used to. So, I saw that set of Maytags here and liked them Actually, I admired them.

I read on about the impending rescue of those old Maytags that I never would've given much thought about otherwise (sorry). Then the question arose about WHO in this forum is capable of getting them - and then - IF someone from AW would get them? AH! Then someone from AW DID get them. But who?

Silence, suspense and speculation...

I was immediately enthralled by this trilogy (pick the three key players) when I saw the post where Brian came out of nowhere - stating how he'd scored the purchase and then divulged his benevolent intent of not only giving those Maytags to Drew in Nevada, but delivering them to him - from over a thousand miles away!

I'm wondering at this point "Who are these people to go to such troubles?" Not really though. I saw the kindness, generosity, good will, dedication to friendship, self-sacrifice existing here...that is so rare to see or read about in daily mundane pursuits, that I had to follow along for a REAL "Reality" story. So I've continued to check the status of this thread several times daily for over a week now.

I graciously applaud the members of this forum for your resolute commitment to your unified passion in a common interest and, most importantly, your dedication to each other. YOU...all of you, are quite an uncommon community within what most often seems a cesspool of societal UGLINESS hidden behind the cloak of anonymity afforded to anyone...on this thing someone named the internet.

Hi ectofix - thanks and welcome. I take responsibility for the title - "wake the dead"...as it is such a rare occasion to find a set of 906's in this condition, no less. I picked the title to reflect a rare moment of discovery and for all here who collect, an expression that says these were special.

The USA has regional difference in humor and expressions. Since you're here in the south, you may have heard of the expression (an old one, from what Geogian's tell us)..."it's so good you want to slap your grandma" So, I suppose that would have worked "Found ! So Good!!...you want to slap your grandma". But, I'd probably have more frowns. My mom, who was English-Scottis, used to say something about waking the dead if a big event occurred.

Hope you hang out a while...as you already see, good people and interesting place. I might say, it could be even...therapeutic. :-)

Southern humor

Phil, I absolutely adored my grandmother Margaret Crotty, and she may have loved more than anyone else in my entire life.

AND YET

I laughed out loud  with a full belly wiggle when I read: "It's so good you want to slap your grandma."

Learned a lot about Southern humor from your fellow Georgian Flannery O' Connor, but you've got one on her with slapping' Grammy.

Thank you.

I spent yesterday afternoon with my parents and yesterday evening with my sister, brother-in-law and Mother. At my sister's we talked and laughed about old times and new. My sister is so funny and when we get together it's almost always non-stop laughter. My mom and I left there about 10:00 PM or so and I went back to her house to get a couple of things I forgot. I got back to Columbia around 12 mid-night and got a good night's sleep. Then went to the chiropractor today and I'm starting to feel like my old self. A good dinner and another good night's sleep and I'll be back to my usual routine. It sure is good to be home.

Christina, you asked to see some pictures of what Drew sent home with me, so here they are. I was going to use these to fix up my white 806's, but they're so nice I really hate to do it. And they're an exact set too (serial # SB). Both made in Jan. of 1972. I guess I could have the white cabinets powder coated, switch the model/serial labels and the best of all the parts combined, but of course the labels won't accurately reflect the machines then. So many dilemmas. He also gave me a few parts for my restorations.
