NYC has some of the oldest housing stock in the country.

I can attest to that for I've lived in an apartment building.
The kitchen's and bathroom's really needs work throughout the city.
I wished that I had a full picture of my kitchen before the remodel and after.
The apartment that I lived in had the smallest of the three and I done a little plumbing to get my laundry set in back in 1995/6.[this post was last edited: 5/12/2010-09:20]

My last move

was in a whirlwind of 11 days - had to be in the 'States, had to move, couldn't look at the new place in the meantime, friends showed up, got the latch key from the building superintendent and packed me up and moved me while I was in the air.
Got to Munich in time to help with sorting things into the new place.
One of my oldest friends is married to one of these TV-psychologists. She was doing my several hundred cook books and stumbled across a box of several hand mixers.

She actually had the nerve to suggest that someone who had so many waffle irons and mixers was unbalanced!

The other eight people, including her husband - all of whom had inherited mixers, waffle irons and various and sundry other goodies from me over the decades all said, as of one:
"Er SAMMELT, er hortet nicht! Crucifix nominii!!!"

Thank the gods for good friends. Sheesh. We collect, we don't hoard. There's a difference.

They live in a gigantic house, by the by. She made him throw out everything when they got married except his notebook, the clothes she'd chosen for him and the necessary reference books to his profession.

It usually works out ok, the drain is big enough that it can keep up with the flow.

Hi Ingemar. All "normal" kithcen sinks here have a 3-inch strainer basket (762mm) in the drain-plug / drain hole.

The sink's main drain pipe is usually 1.5 inches (381mm) wide.

The washer's drain hose is normally 0.75 inches (191mm) to 1.00 inch (254mm)in diameter.

Sometimes, flow is an issue as many top-loaders contain approximately 26 gallons of water (98L) per fill.

Honestly.
Ingemar, the drain itself is identical to what we use for kitchens here in Europe. The 3" is only for the strainer basket or, as you noted, the disposer.
That said, American TLs don't have separate pumps. They have one which is slowest when there is the most water in the tub and fastest when there is the least. It tends to balance out.

And when it doesn't, yup, it makes a mess.

Althought, your post is meant to be light-hearted and fun, I'm compelled to express to you that many of the comments regarding different ethnic group were insensitive and insulting.

Of course, I don't know you personally but, you seem like a fun guy. I think I would have alot of laughs with you...but, the remarks seemed judgemental. And, it's obvious your life is worlds apart from poor people in the hood but, whatever is UNDERMINDING and BELITTLING to any person(s) is potentially hurtful and harmful. I actually lived right behind that White Castle and was quite poor during my college years. I recall my posts saying the bankers were very out of their element and that I complimented some attributes of the locals.

I actually don't talk about the negative attributes of my own ethnic-group and sublcultures; but I assure you I am well aware of them and would have a good laugh should anyone take a poke at me/them. (Pardon the expression. LOL)
