What are the "Smelliest" detergents out of the dryer?

By smelliest, I mean a detergent that holds it's scent, even after tumble drying. Anyone have an brands in mind?

I know, alot of people don't like lingering scent but I LOVE it. I'm very smell orientated...I smell everything before I buy it! (No funny jokes!!)

I don't like scented fabric softners either. I use unscented because they are too strong (oddly enough). So this is for detergents only....
 
Any P&G product really... Tide Mountain Spring liquid (aka old original scent) gets my award for holding scent longest. Some long sleeve thermal shirts I put away in the Spring still reaked of the stuff when I pulled them out in November, instead of just smelling like stale dresser drawer.

Wisk has a long lasting scent too.
 
Cool, thanks! I haven't used Tide in a long time. The Persil def lasted....I like it most on my sheets. They would smell like Persil for 2 weeks after.

I tend to like powders though...I think I've read that people say the Pearls have a lingering scent too.
 
this is a VERY good thread Joe......

I for one would like to find something that would stick once out of the dryer.....

before Gain was popular, I used to wash my comforter, and only do the wash, no rinsing, and then to the dryer or the line to keep the scent the longest, and the most you got was two days out of that....

products like Gain, and a few others, lay claim to the fresh scent lasting up to 2 weeks, wishing I knew how they do this......

lucky if I can get the bleach smell to stay past the dryer.....

but one I think has the best smell or scent is Powder Tide with Bleach.....that is my go to for almost any stain out there.....

there was a time when I was doing wash, you could smell it through the whole house, now lucky if the scent shows up in the laundry room....
 
I do like Gain honestly but of course I like to try others too. I just saw their commercial with the guy and the dog towel. Too funny. lol. It def does smell for a long time.

The Oxydol powder claims to last for a long time, but I can't find it anywhere locally. I did like the A&H Fresh Scent too...I may buy a small box to see how it does. The one I used was the pacs. Heavenly clean scent!

And of course Persil...I only tried the original scent, not the Clean Fresh....

I air dry a lot of my clothes and using Cheer, it does smell for a while. I use straight Biz on all my whites and they have a nice scent too. I don't use fabric softner on them and that seems to help...even out of the dryer.

I'd rather get opinions on what people have used as opposed to going out and buying several to see which works. LOL. ;-)
 
I do believe that a good detergent should leave a pleasant sent after the laundry is dry, unless of course you opt to use fragrance free. It almost seems to me that the manufactures ar purposely altering their detergent fragrance formula's so there is little, if any fragrance. Then guess what? You can now BUY an additional product to add lasting fragrance to your laundry. It's a win for P&G, Lever Bros., et al.

Now I'm intrigued by Tide! haha. Target has almost an entire aisle just for Tide products. I was amazed at how many they have now...same for Gain.

I believe that is what the previous owner of my Filter Flo used. When I got it, it reaked of detergent. I wondered what it was until my coworker walked by me and she smelled exactly like it. She said she uses Tide.

But I do believe many detergents leave a scent and it doesn't mean they aren't rinsed properly. I imagine the detergent particles wash away and the fragrance ones are what get left behind....
 
My Speed Queen Top loader rinses so well, but it does use a full tub of water that there is rarely any detergent scent left just a clean smell which is what I like. ..however I know people that use the same detergent in a HE machine that when their laundry is washed smells strongly of detergent. ..this is why I'm asking if its do to rinsing.
Martin did you really wash a comforter and not rinse it just to retain the scent LOL?? Cheryl
 
I find that the current Tide HE powder has a noticeable scent. It doesn't smell anything like the original Tide; I would say it's kind of fruity. Although the scent is prominent out of the washer, it doesn't seem to last out of the dryer for me. Maybe you would have different results.

My favorite was the blue Ajax powder. It left a wonderful scent out of the dryer. Sadly, that product is long gone.

The fragrance house Maison Francis Kurkdjian has a detergent version of at least one of its lines. That might be closer to what you're looking for, although it's pricey and probably only of interest as a novelty item (although maybe not because its fragrances are very good).
 
The latest "original" Tide powder has a lighter and fairly short lived scent compared to the last 15 years of Original Tide powder that I can remember. I don't necessarily like it nor do I dislike it, if it were stronger though, I would definitely not like it.

I sort of have a love hate relationship with the original original scent, especially in liquid form. It smells good but if it's too strong (and it usually is once I've been using it through several washes and starts to build up in the clothes) then it starts making me gag.

I think it reminds me of a scent I was around a lot while traveling to Paris, with a stomach flu as a small child.
 
Interesting, I've never heard of laundry detergents from fragrance manufacturers! Lol

The Family Dollar near me has Ariel (the Mexican version I assume). It's Mountain Spring scent like Tide and smells absolutely amazing. Cheap at 4.99 for a small bag. I'm going to try that too.

Has anyone tried it?
 
Joey..my family dollar sells the USA Ariel . Is the powder white or blue? usa Ariel is white and Mexican Ariel is blue..I've bought the Mexican Ariel at a little Mexican grocer in Pittsburgh loaded in pretty phosphates. Even without phosphates Mexican Ariel does a fantastic job. I will say Mexican and USA Ariel are sudsy..you can get away with it in a FL but it requires very careful dosing .
 
I guess like most P&G detergents, it's sudsy haha. I haven't actually bought any yet. The package says "Classico" on it , so I'm guessing it's the Mexican version. I could smell it through the package and I loved the fragrance!
 
I say gain laundry detergent and fabric softener

I'd go for Gain laundry detergent and matching fabric softener. I like my scents of laundry detergent and fabric softener to match. I get compliments on how I smell when somebody comes up to me. I expect my clothes to be clean and soft! I expect them to look vibrant too!

And have to say that Persil pods seem to have the most lingering scent to me. 

 

Not a bad scent, reminds me a lot of Ralph Loren Polo--a "manly clean smell". 

 

Oxy-clean pods leave a nice light lemon scent. 

 

Tide, original seems to be the strongest out of the washer but not so lingering out of the dryer.  My Mom is very allergic to the Tide Mountain fresh so don't use that one anymore.    Of course the Tide Free & Clear is what I use on the white, under clothes.

 

 

 
 
Nice! Yeah I'm thinking I'll have to use Persil or Gain lol. The A&H i remember smelling really good so I'll have to try it again. I bought a bag of Ariel Clasico and it smells awesome!! But, like the Cheer HE powder, the smell is gone out of the dryer. It was even faint for items I air dried. It looks just like the Cheer powder too...all white. Seems to clean decent though.

yeah, Mamapinky, I did some crazy things back then.......

I used to love the scent of Clorox2 powder from years ago, you would leave the lid of the machine up while washing just to have that scent linger through the house...

one thing I can't find anymore, and it was something my grandmother would use, well, actually for cleaning all over the house, Pine Jelly, came in a quart jar, worked great in the laundry, especially for diapers....
 
Hazel's Tip #437...

So, anybody else, use unscented softners...then a few bottles, off hand, such as:

 

All them Polo's

A Perry Ellis or two

Drakar Noir

 

A spritz or two halfway through the old dryer cycle??

 

I guess it its like deer hunting scents...

It makes the clothes and house smell Wonnerful, Wonnerful...

Although, it hasn't netted me anyone yet...wonder why??

Gain

Made the mistake of bringing home a half full bottle from laundromat someone didn't want. Should have taken the message as even with the five rinses in the Lavamat my laundry stunk to high heaven. Machine drying and airing out over night did little to lessen the stench.

Next runner up is both the American and German Persil "gels" or liquids. Though the German version can be toned down with proper dosing (use very little) and a bit of airing after drying. The American stuff packs a stronger whiff that is like taxes; it just won't stop.

Actually have found Tide with "Actilift" rather pleasant. After laundry is dried you barely can detect any scent. Other versions of Tide of course pack a fragrance wallop.
 
Gain

We used it for years...both the regular and Island fresh (or whatever it's called) and flannel sheets put away for the summer still smell when they are brought back out in the fall.  Same goes for Clean Breeze Downy and Tide.  But, we grew weary of it and switched to unscented softeners and whatever detergent...Persil, Tide, or Wisk.
 
Tide "Stain Remover" Booster Pods

Pack a stench wollop as well that seems totally immune to rinsing.

Just did a load of linens this weekend washed months ago using those darn stain pods and the whiff coming off wash and rinse waters as they drained was strong.

You have to wonder about the affects of such highly resistant scents remaining on one's washing. I mean if it won't come out of textiles easily the stuff also is rubbing off on your skin and or being inhaled.

Happily things washed in Gain the once were free of that scent after being laundered again in another product.
 
Biz

can be like that too. I wash my whites in mostly Biz, with a little bit of detergent and they have a nice smell after drying. . It's not overpowering at all. I tried using Biz alone but like you said Launderess, it does suds up a lot and doesn't rinse as clean as my Cheer or even the Ariel I just bought. So I don't use it alone anymore...or reduce the dosage.
 
Biz Powder

Uses sodium perborate as the bleaching agent; that substance can be difficult to rinse from fabrics. Don't know about the newest versions but the old powder by P&G in some versions was heavy on fillers. Again impeded rinsing.

I like to use the older versions of Biz in my stash as a pre-soak in tubs (never metal).

I think modern day Biz uses Sodium percarbonate, but is heavy on Sodium Carbonate. IMO its still a great presoaker if you need oxygen bleach and enzymes but does require heavy rinsing. Cheryl
 
Well I bought a bag of Gain regular Flings today and I have to say I love the smell! I'm not crazy about pods only because they don't give you much versatility when it comes to different load sizes...in particular smaller loads. I did a load of lights and it was about medium sized...LOTS of suds going on with just 1 fling. Did a larger load of darks and suds were actually perfect. Out of all the Gain scents I think I like the original and Lavender best. I wish Lavender was available in the flings!

Out of the dryer the smell was still there...though not overpowering at all. I definitely like it.

One thing I noticed is the detergent part of the pod dissolved rather quickly but it took more time for the Febreeze and Oxy parts to dissolve. I wonder if that is done on purpose to release them later in the wash?
 
I finally finished off my box of Gain Original powder and started using the Persil liquid, at first I liked it alot but after a day the citrusy scent grew old and now I'm not a fan. I will probably just use the stuff on towels now. The original Gain never got old on me.

I just washed my sheets in some Ariel powder and the smell reminds me of the old Original Tide powder and the liquid together. I like the smell so far. I will have a better idea though when I wake up in the morning (or afternoon?).
 
I liked the Persil smell too....but like you, after a while it was just meh. I haven't tried the Fresh Scent...I may next time I buy it.

I love the smell of the Ariel too but it's barely noticeable after the clothes dry....
