What are y'all doing in New England to get ready for the storm?

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Chicago's northern suburbs got 8" dumped on them today and O'hare is running 1 hour behind with over 225 flights canceled.

I was looking at the aviation weather forecast for NYC to BOS and while NYC is only expecting 12-14" of snow they are anticipating 50-60mph sustained winds. The isobars are wrapped so tight that you'd need a shoe horn to put your finger in between them!
BOS is expecting only 40mph winds, but even that can cause massive snow drifts in the 25" inches of snow expected.

Bundle up and stay inside and keep those fireplaces going!

Right now I have been hearing that during Friday snow will turn to rain, as it will be just above freezing (38) but it is going to go down to 23 for that night. That can cause some serious icy roads.

Geoff, No, that is a MAJOR North-South artery in the District of Columbia and then up into Montgomery County in MD. As you go north in the District, the elevation rises so going uphill in the snow gets to be more fun, especially in a rear-wheel drive vehicle with no weight in the trunk piloted by someone who is afraid of driving to begin with and is not used to driving in snow.

Jeffrey, when I lived in Atlanta, we got more ice storms than snow storms and those were bad in a region filled with long-needle pines. Atlanta is 1000 ft above sea level and the storms would usually begin as rain with dropping temperatures. The rain would turn to sleet and freezing rain and coat everything. The pine trees would bend, then break and fall on the wires and there was almost no traction on the roads. Sometimes, it would finish with ice pellets or hominy snow as it was called. Give me snow anytime over ice. I don't think that the area had any equipment for treating winter roads back then and it proably was not cost effective to have any. You can't really plow ice. Life was just supposed to stop.

Tim, does your dog have fun in the snow?

Sorry, I did not know that was a memorial picture. She's a noble creature.

I always like stories of or, better yet, to see an animal's first encounter with snow. Usually, as long as their humans are not afraid of it and are out in it, that is good enough for them, but to see a world so transformed for the first time; I wonder if some sort of ancient memory circuits in the brain kick in to let them know about snow. That is one of the things I look forward to finding out where all of the secrets are revealed.

4 Wheel Drive...

The Biggest problem with these nitwits behind the wheel of the Soccer Mom Mobiles is that don't realize that 4 Wheel Drive doesn't help you stop.

I love how they pass you doing 70 miles per hour on the snow, then watch them go into a spin when they try to stop.

Atlanta /Ga snow "storms"

Real snowfalls rarely occur here. A few years ago, it snowed enough to make snowmen.

Danemodsandy is right ...slightest threat of snowfall and into action goes Ch2 ActionNews and "Channel 2 Severe Weather Center", "Storm Tracker...", WIZometer updates (a Wiz reading? LOL) that releases a grocery store shopping frenzy. But we lived in a hilly area in Forsyth, and where it's not flat, they don't have enough salt brine and resources to make driving safe, and by the time anyone got to melting roads, mothernature melted it or turned it to rain.

It was long ago that I encountered a 24" plus snowfall. The drifts were 3-4ft...Lake Michigan lake effect snow. Flakes came straight down, clustering, some as big as golf-balls. No ice, and not too wet - really pretty, covered the trees. NEasterners might be used to all that - but a 40-55mph wind and then ice? That can't be fun...with wine, though..good fire....just no serious electrical outages and deaths.

Hope all NEasterners get through it ok.

Phil:

You just brought back a bunch of memories of Glenn Burns, the biggest drama diva in Atlanta.

When he's getting all worked up about snow, you would swear he's the love child of Bette Davis and Richard Simmons. That overwrought.

I do not miss him.

Last blizzard we had

It was just a normal day... Went to lunch in the afternoon, storm started, went home and hung out til the next afternoon when it ended. The worst part about the whole thing was the 5 foot snow drifts in the driveway. It took 3 hours to dig just one car out! (no snowblower, big driveway)

After getting the car out I went to go check everything out around town. Roads had about a foot of snow in them and nothing had been plowed for hours. Had to step on the gas and fly through a snow-barricade to get out of the block (probably the only time an AWD SUV actually came in handy!)

Didn't run out to the grocery store and stock up on crap or anything like that. We already have a pantry full of stuff as it is.

That was the 2-3-11 blizzard. Think it was the same one that collapsed the metrodome roof? I know it was the same winter at least... But anyway that storm dumped 24" with up to 5 foot drifts. VERY windy storm. Got very cold after too.

Oh forgot to mention, Chicagoland was back up and running by the next day. Expressways and all roads were clear just the day after the storm. The city of Chicago did an excellent job handling it's 3rd worst blizzard in history, minus the LSD disaster.

That was the storm that made me swear off snow forever! Can't stand the stuff anymore.

You weren't around for the infamous Chicago Blizzard of 1967'! That was wild. About 30" of snow fell in a 24 hour period. The whole city was shut down for a week. The day after the blizzard the temps went below zero. No stores were open, no cars/buses on the street. People even had a difficult time getting the doors open to their houses because a snow drift formed over their front doors. I have never seen snow that bad since.

Hah that's why I hardly think our last blizzard was a big deal. All my relatives, parents, etc remember the '67 blizzard like yesterday! Actually they told some pretty good stories too.

I do like that stove, Fred. I have a Hearthstone gas one like that, and I hope I dont have use it tonight, as it does run without power. I am about 30 miles inland from Bar Harbor and so far nothing much, even though we are under a Blizzard warning. But local forcasts and the Weather Channel say watch out! Basically because its coming later on tonight and tomorrow here. Keep you all posted as everything happens.

Aren't those curtains just a little to close to that firebox?

Stores were all out of food, milk & bread with no knowledge of when they would be getting any.

I think it took 4 or 5 days before any plows reached our area. Our cars had to be dug out of the garage because the doors had been drifted over. In fact you could easily walk up the drift all the way to the top of the garage! Some garage roofs caved in from the weight of the snow. And it was quite windy too. You'd see the wind blowing the loose snow off the top of the drifts and it looked like a dust cloud. And at night we could hear the howling of the wind through the trees outside.

"Now every school bus company is so scared of being sued by the little-darlings' parents that they just choose not to run"

Well, Ken, I don't know how it is in CT, but here in MA, it's the school department that makes the decision. Now, if they were to make an obviously stupid one, the school bus company might question them and say it's a case of safety for the drivers, kids, and general population. In 13 years of driving, I haven't seen a need for that to happen.

As far as getting ready, I went and got another 5 gallon can for gas as Rich thought it might be a good idea, just in case. Each has about 4.5 gallons in it, the snowblower and generator are by the back door, and we have plenty of food. I decided, since I'm basically an idiot, to head out to the store at about 2pm to get some things. Not many people on the road, snow not too bad, and I got my chicken thighs to marinate (in my Swiss Chalet marinade- thank you again Petek!!!). Now, dinner is done and I'm gonna head out to snowblow what we already have to make room for the brunt of the storm that's expected about 11pm here.

I couldn't believe the store. I was speaking to a manager and she said the meat department filled, to capacity, every case available overnight last night. When I was there, it was bare bones. Raped and pilliaged. Funny- she said the big surprize was that they ran out of the small cans of tomato paste by last night. It's a 4' face on a shelf! She was wondering what people were doing with it... I told her she probably didn't want to know.

It's weather, people. Like Eddy said, nonsense. We'll be inside for a day, things will settle down, we'll shovel, plow and snowblow out, and be done with it Sunday. Idiots that get on the road at the wrong time may make the news for bad things happening to them, but it's winter in New England.

Besides, knowing I couldn't go out tonight and it would be unlikely for Sat night, I got out to karaoke last night. I'm good!!!

Happy storm, everyone!

Chuck
