Hey Rinso,

K2R is still available. Check the link below. Bet your local hardware store could order it for you, or somebody has to have it on the internet.

depends

On the stain, the fabric and the colorfastness/not of the item.

For greasy stains, I have found nothing better than the 'boil wash' setting on my washer and any decent liquid detergent.
If color or fabric forbid such high temperatures, I use a detergent with enzymes designed to attack the oil.

Protein based stains are nastier, here I try to use the lowest temperature possible and enzymes.

Fruity stains, tea stains, coffee stains, etc. come out in normal European detergents because of the oxygen bleaches, enzymes and phosphates galore, but if I got clumsy wearing silk, Acè works wonders.

Dr. Beckmans specialty stain lifters (there are like 20+ of them) work well on the icky stuff like ball-point pen, mustard and other nasties.

Pinesol has often removed a latex paint (anal retentives, yes I am aware of the misnomer) which has set into my clothes. Not always, but often enough to be worth the stink.

When all else fails, I try the bleaches which are sold with cloth dyes. They are like super strong chlorine bleach in their effectiveness.

A phosphated (STPP) laundry detergent has worked best for me for general stain cleaning. For whites, I'll use one with an oxygen bleach. Hot water (after a cool prewash or a gradually warming wash cycle also works well for tough non-protein stains. I rarely resort to chlorine bleach.

For oil or grease based stains that won't come out in regular wash, I will sometimes spray the stain with brake cleaner (basically, it's acetone), with a terry cloth towel on the other side to absorb the cleaner plus stain. Then let it dry, and re-wash with STPP. For really tough such stains, I might try carb cleaner, but it really stinks and is quite toxic. Again, let it evaporate fully before washing. Another solvent for spot treatment to try is vodka, or rubbing alcohol.

The absolutely infallible stain remover.

a sharp pair of scissors. (Ha!)

Almost as good...Spray N Wash Aerosol for oily stains, Spray N Wash Stain Stick for everything else. However, since I have been using SA8 powdered detergent......I haven't needed an additional stain removal product nearly as much.

I remember the "soy sauce" scene in "Thoroughly Modern Millie." I watched it again for the first time in years a few months ago, and I thought the movie was pretty funny.
