The answer: GAIN

Gain Sweet Sizzle that is.

We tried this and it honestly has that 1990's Downy April Fresh Smell when used in moderate dosages. I could see how it could be a little too strong if too much is used. I think there are three distinct Downy April Fresh smells. First, the simple smell of the 1970s-1980s. Next, I think the smell became a little different during the 1990s. Finally, the current scent. I think the latest is the worst.

This product doesn't have that old vintage scent that I wish was still available, but it does have that scent that most of us would recognize.

One can only assume that the fact P&G will not re-release Downy "April Fresh Scent" despite years of consumer begging, crying and pleading, is the stuff contained some toxic substance.

Every other consumer good has gone old school recently tugging at the strings of baby-boomers hears (and purse strings for that matter), including Coke-Cola which one cand find in the original cane sugar form. But no, P&G keeps the formula of "April Fresh" Downy safely locked away never to see the light of day again.

I See No Reason....

....Why a scent could not be closely approximated while leaving out whatever toxic ingredients might have been present in the original.

I think a likelier reason for keeping Downy's "April Fresh Scent" under wraps is that a re-introduction would not boost the career - or the ego - of any of the young geniuses* at P & G today.

Many a good old product is killed and many a questionable new one introduced because someone thinks it's a good career move to push the idea through.

*Yes, that's facetious. Totally.

Gain Sweet Sizzle

After reading the posts on THS, regarding Gain Sweet Sizzle approximating the scent of classic April Fresh Downy, I tried it about six weeks ago. It is pretty close. I mixed the Gain Sweet Sizzle crystals into some Downy Free, mixed well and allowed to sit overnight (then mixed again prior to use). It is more viscous than regular Downy but still softens nicely and the scent is not overpowering.

I look for the vintage Downy at every estate sale that I go to and I have some of it that I found at an estate sale in Midtown Memphis. It is clotted but put it in a cup of hot water and it works like a charm.

Really?

To me, there is no better smell than natural baby smell, plus clothes/blankets washed in Dreft.

Having come from a home where fabric softener was never used, I might be speaking out of turn, though.

Original Smells?

Does anyone know why the manufacturer has not come back with the original scents of Tide, Cheer, and Oxydol? Along with previous version of Downey April Fresh, IMHO those were the best. Really wish they would. Laundress makes a good point with other products such as Coke, etc.... that have re-introduced original formulas. If not, why not?

I have found the original scent of TIDE Liquid......

ALDI has it......

their generic brand of Liquid, Orange bottle, Blue cap....here it runs 6.99....

believe it or not, your water conditions have a lot to do with scents being too strong or weak.....Right now at the country house, its on well water, treatments to soften and correct the PH are in place...the PH needs to be recharged, so its running on the Acid side.....I don't care how strong the scent, even Bleach, it all gets cancelled out when the system is not 100%...no scent left behind....this will change back to normal once I recharge the PH tank

now the City house is on TownsWater supply, no treatment systems....same detergents.....the smell lingers thruout the house while I am washing, and also stays in the clothes.....

I kinda prefer the clothes to have the scent of detergents and softner...
