Beginning mid 2010 the refrigerators and freezers made at this plant will be manufactured at another plant in Mexico. Approx 1100 jobs will be lost in this closure.

Plant Closing

The Evansville location is the old Seeger refrigerator company which Whirlpool purchased in the mid 50s to get the Coldspot business, WPool didnt have a fridge at that time so Sears...wanting to get several products under one management..helped Whirlpool essentially buy out the Seeger Co. which had made Coldspot refrigerators for years, also at this time Whirlpool bought out Birtman electric co. which made all sears vacuums and a large number of its mixers,Sears was really on top of things then, shame to see it now.

Good Lord, does this mean that only Electrolux/Frigidaire is making refrigeration equipment in the US? Does GE still manufacture refrigeration products here?

Did Amana come with Whirlpool's purchase of Maytag? Have they stopped manufacturing here, as well?

It's starting to look like Frigidaire and Speed Queen might be getting lonely.

Electrolux closed their refrigerator plant in Greenville, Michigan several years ago and moved its production to Mexico. So, there probably won't be any refrigerator plants left here in the United States. You might as well buy something from a Chinese company, as it would probably be cheaper and won't have an impact on the local jobs anyway.

As was mentioned in a recent GE thread, GE makes top freezer models at Appliance Park in Louisville. Source was a recent Louisville Courier-Journal article.

I read last year that the Amana Refrigeration plant in Amana, Iowa was still making the bottom freezer units, but demand had dropped off sharply with the recession.

The pressure to cut costs in the appliance industry must be tremendous, because the public has shown NO reluctance to buy imported appliances. I always look to see where something is made before buying, but it's obvious the average person couldn't care less. If your competition is manufacturing in low wage countries, why shouldn't you? :(

shame on whirlpool, heh, like we dont have enough job loss already!!! and whirlpool wonders why their quality went to hell, all these companies want to make a quick buck, pure greed, companies like whirlpool are what put us in this recession to begin with people need to WAKE UP and smell the lead paint!!!!!! i was at macys department store today, i saw this sweater, i liked it, then i saw the price tag, 150 dollars for a sweater, guess where its made? CHINA! i think it was a columbia sweater, are u kidding me? why would i pay that much for junk made in china?? how can they make things in china then turn around and charge TOP DOLLAR for them?? wtf?

Mexican made products are just as bad or WORSE than those built in China!Lots of "US" companies are flocking to build factories there-and churn out poor stuff. Now DeWalt tools are made in Mexico.I just bought a Sanitaire vacuum and it was made in Mexico-however think the Mexican factory is well supervised by the Electrolux folks-the Sanitaire vacuum is nice quality and works well.See the VCCC forum.

Whirlpool is getting downright ridiculous!

Since I lost my accounting job in April because of all this corporate greed, I've taken on whatever work I can recently. So, lately, I've been cleaning in a new construction apartment building in northeast Minneapolis. As I was down on my hands and knees vacuuming under a new BOL Whirlpool dishwasher, I noticed the motors are still being made in China.... I thought these junky motors were the source of numerous dishwasher fires recently (?). Also, when I roll out the new BOL Whirlpool top-freezer fridges in these apartments, I notice that their compressors are PANASONIC (a Japanese company, no less) and made in SINGAPORE! It's no wonder so many Whirlpool employees are being walked to the curb! And I just hate the fact that they put those little stickers on the front of new Maytag top-load washers saying that Whirlpool employs more American workers than any other American appliance manufacturer. "Our washers are designed, engineered, and assembled in the U.S.A!" Yeah, that's great, but put decent AMERICAN-made components in these machines before making bold statements like that! UHH! My dad works in the steel industry and is scheduled to be laid off until next spring because of such low demand for steel. Maybe he and millions of other Americans in the manufacturing sector wouldn't be in such a predicament if the big wigs of these companies would just think about the trickle-down effect of their greedy decisions. I used to be a die-hard Kenmore and Whirlpool customer because of their durable, long-lived appliances. If this keeps up, not any more. And I'll make sure Whirlpool knows about it by telling everyone I know!

My new Electrolux IQ washer & dryer were made in a plant in Mexico. I was hoping that somehow the would have at least been made in Sweden in a plant that plays ABBA all day on their background music system. Oh well..........

now is the time when ALL of us!!!! i mean ALL!!!! need to praise speed queen for making their machines in the us!!!!! all of us also need to literally bombard whirlpool with tons and tons of messages on how it is wrong to screw american workers for a quick buck.
