My aunt and uncle built a new house in late '66. The bought all new appliances, including a beautiful avocado matched Whirlpool set. I have no idea what models they were but at least MOL, and they lasted for years and years. This set brings back memories of that set, such handsome models and so very Whirlpool.

Man so Close !!! If they only had the Lint filter!!! I would give what you wanted no Question ask... and pay 300 to have it delivered down here..
I can't figure why did they make some of these with out the lint filter??

not like you could not add the manual filter to this.....and this may already have the 3 port pump......all you need is a hose, and change the splash guard to one with the built in filter......granted, its not the magic mix, but the water fall is there to be seen.......

This machine would require a decent bit of re-configuration to have a manual filter. Two pumps could be used to supply a manual filter, the four port or the three port. Undoubtedly this machine came with a two-port pump. Those with the three-port style pump (less the little third port) and self-cleaning filters didn't hit the scene until ten years after this machine was built.
Since it has self-cleaner, it depends on where that filter is and how it is supplied (by check valve or not) as to what would happen if a four-port pump was used instead. I'm not certain there would be water supply to the lower half of the four port pump with the current tub and plumbing. We'd have to see what filter WP used, and how much supplemental plumbing for the filter is already there. Some self-cleaning filters were were WP only, especially the one mounted at the bottom of the manifold trap. I am not as familiar with these and where they got their water from.
If the much newer three port was installed, no plumbing is needed except from the little port to the filter, BUT there would be leftover hoses most likely from a side tub outlet that would need to be capped. The worst issue with that though is the plastic tub ring that would be required (unless you're going to drill a recess into this nice avocado top panel). This is a rare bird these days being a large capacity with a metal tub ring.
This machine needs to stay as-is. Its the first machine I've seen to come along on the site here for several years that could use my mega Roto-Swirl. Now that would be FUN to see one day! I'm not stating the work can't be done, I'm just sayin'...

Beg all you want..........this machine in particular like so many with a self clean filter only use a 2 port pump......in any configuration........the only exception would be if the machine had a detergent dispenser, to which a 4 port pump would be used....and can't be switched out for a 3 port......
I have 2 Whirlpools here.....one has a self clean filter, thru use of hoses and flapper valves, to the filter mounted in the lower left of the cabinet, the other one is the simple comb filter attached under the tub....no other plumbing required.....before I attempted to add the 3 port pump, I looked underneath, and its already there, capped off.....all I have to do is add a hose, and a filtering mechanism of choice....
chances are high, this machine in particular has only a 2 port pump...a simple switch out...and your set.......

BTW....RickR.....that is a great machine....I love the setup and the changes you have done.....excellent......even adding that filter ups the drama all that much more.....

That pump went NLA shortly after BDs were discontinued, in favor of the 3-port with the cap and clamp. Yes indeed, if you un-cap that port, you can do any number of things with a hose added to it, including adding another filter, or making a fountain.
That said, if you put a 3-port pump into an older machine like your other WP with the extra hoses and the flapper valve, none of that will be useable as the 3-port pump is mono-directional, it DOES NOT reverse flow.
If you take that same older WP of yours, and add a 4-port to it, you have to supply the third and fourth (lower) ports somehow. The original filtration system would work fine using the top half of the four port pump, but without a water supply, the extra two ports would be dry. You would have to tap into the water from the flapper which is already going to cabinet mounted filter.
This is what I was saying about this being possible, but not immediately easy.

No, this is a different machine altogether. I'm still working on digging that one out of my backroom. This avocado one is in a rented storage that I'm in the process of emptying.
Rick, small coincidence, but these machines came on the same load, and from the same location as a certain 56 Whirlpool Imperial dryer you know well.....

Well, Kenny, you made a great haul that day! That has been quite a few years ago, it's time someone "adopts" those machines from you.
Gordon, I did not mean to imply that the filter could be added to the machine without adding the needed hoses, but nevertheless, the filter system could be added to any of the belt drive wp/km machines. Change out the pump, add the brackets and filter, and change whatever hoses are rotton, and needed to do it. After all, these are old machines now. They all should have hoses, seals, and bearings checked/replaced as needed. To think that a 40+ year old machine that has also sat for years can just be hooked up and used is just wrong anyway. It is best to do a full restoration before it is put into service. If you do not, something will break down shortly, even if it runs at all.
